    Name:
    Jeremy Bentham Dates:
Born: February 15, 1748 in London, England
    Died: June 6, 1832 Pseudonyms
Jeremy Bentham is known to have written under a couple of pseudonyms during his career. Some letters submitted to the Gazeteer under the name "Irenaeus", for example, and other letters submitted to the Public Advertiser were signed with "Anti-Machiavel." Bentham also used the name "Gamaliel Smith, Esq." in 1823 for the work Not Paul, but Jesus
(Thanks goes to Jack W. Brown, Assitant Professor of Criminal Justice at Missouri Valley College for this information) Biography:
Jeremy Bentham was an English philosopher with very radical views on the nature of political and social organizations. Bentham first developed the philosophy of modern utilitarianism, a system of ethics based upon the universal hedonistic premise that the good can be judged based upon whatever produces the greatest happiness for the largest number of people. Bentham started with the premise that "Nature has placed mankind under the governance of two sovereign masters, pain and pleasure." From this he inferred that the morality of actions should be determined by whether they increased pleasure or increased pain. It should be noted that at no point does Bentham describe such actions as "duties." For Bentham, rights and duties are legal constructions, thus the existence of a moral duty would require the existence of a moral lawgiver and he postulated no such entity in his moral theories.

PANOPTICON or, PREFACE . Morals reformed - health preserved - industry invigorated instruction diffused - public burthens lightened - Economy seated, as it were, upon a rock - the gordian knot of the Poor-Laws are not cut, but untied - all by a simple idea in Architecture! -Thus much I ventured to say on laying down the pen - and thus much I should perhaps have said on taking it up, if at that early period I had seen the whole of the way before me. A new mode of obtaining power of mind over mind, in a quantity hitherto without example: and that, to a degree equally without example, secured by whoever chooses to have it so, against abuse. - Such is the engine: such the work that may be done with it. How far the expectations thus held out have been fulfilled, the reader will decide.

JEREMY BENTHAM Kim Swanson Graduate Student Criminology Florida State University INTRODUCTION: Jeremy Bentham was a theorist from the Classical School of thought, which developed in the 18 th century. Several aspects of Bentham's life will be examined. Life in England in the 18 th century greatly influenced his thinking. Next, peers of Bentham criticized and praised his writings and influence. Finally current theories and thought will be contrasted to see how Bentham's ideas of "utility" and punishment are used today. He also left behind a more tangible memory. Determined to be perpetually present at the University College London he willed that his body be preserved in a cabinet, dressed in his own clothes and topped with a wax head of his likeness. Whether this was because he had a bizarre sense of humor or a supreme case of self-importance no one seems to know. What is known is Jeremy Bentham was both respected and scorned in his time yet his ideas can be found throughout criminal justice thought and practice still today. ENGLAND IN THE 18 TH CENTURY The 18 th century was a time of advances and changes. Machine filled textile mills replaced hand spinning and weaving done in the home. The people were not much different than ours in this century. Babies were born and elders died. People wondered how to feed the poor, how much government should interfere in its citizens lives, how crime can be controlled, what to do about widespread addiction and how people of different religious persuasions could get along.

Jump to: navigation search Bentham, Jeremy (1748-1832): English Philosopher. Jeremy Bentham was born on February 15, 1748 in London. Said to be a child prodigy, Bentham began reading while still a toddler and studied Latin at the age of three. His father and grandfather were both respected attorneys and it was expected that Jeremy would follow in their footsteps and study the law. He entered Queens College, Oxford at the age of twelve and, after graduating four years later, he began to study law at Lincoln’s Inn. Despite earning his degree, Bentham never practiced law. Instead, he spent most of his adult life writing about a wide range of issues, from reform of the existing laws and government, to his moral philosophy, as well as animal welfare, universal suffrage, reform of the penal system, the design of prisons as well as the decriminalization of homosexuality. He was also fond of creating new words. To him we owe “international,†“maximize,†“minimize†and “codify,†among others. His most important work was the Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation Bentham also saw the individual as the most important element in society, describing society itself as nothing but the sum of the interests of the individuals that made it up. So, good government should enact laws that create the most happiness for the largest number of members of society. Individual members of society should be motivated to seek happiness for the whole of society because all members of society share common interests. The job of legislators is to make the connection between goals of individuals and the goals of the group as obvious as possible. “The highest morality is the pursuit of the happiness of the greatest number†(OED, Vol. 1, A-O).

    The English Utilitarians
    by Leslie Stephen
    Volume One
Jeremy Bentham PREFACE This book is a sequel to my History of English Thought in the Eighteenth Century. The title which I then ventured to use was more comprehensive than the work itself deserved. I felt my inability to write a continuation which should at all correspond to a similar title for the nineteenth century. I thought, however, that by writing an account of the compact and energetic school of English Utilitarians I could thrown some light both upon them and their contemporaries. I had the advantage for this purpose of having been myself a disciple of the school during its last period. Many accidents have delayed my completion of the task; and delayed also its publication after it was written. Two books have been published since that time, which partly cover the same ground; and I must be content with referring my readers to them for further information. They are The English Radicals, by Mr C.B. Roylance Kent; and English Political Philosophy from Hobbes to Maine, by Professor Graham. INTRODUCTORY NOTES: 1. Table Talk, 3 July 1830.
