Truth Spirit ... Search Introduction Compared with most philosophers, Berdyaev's thoughts and writings are vibrant, fresh, alive. From the way he writes I get the sense he struggled with his ideas as Jacob wrestled with the angel. Although his home was more in the realm of spirit than of ideas, he knew that domain well and entered it with passion. He saw it as the arena where the struggle is actively being waged between freedom and determinism, creativity and passivity, noumena and phenomena, and so on. Philosophy was an urgent matter to him how to live one's life, what to base it on, how to reconcile God and the world or the individual and society, what it means to be a person, coming to terms with the anxiety and alienation that accompanies freedom, the meaning of history and the destiny of humanity, the importance of creativity in our lives. All of these topics he thought and wrote about and contributed to significantly. For these reasons he sheds much light on our contemporary situation, not only illuminating present ills, errors and wrongs, and giving us a surer footing, but also guiding our way out and challenging us to embark on the difficult road to freedom and creativity. I find it intensely life-affirming how Berdyaev weaves the concepts of creativity, freedom, the person, and history into his concept of the Third Epoch, which he also refers to as the "Eighth Day of Creation". This is the age which we are about to enter, he maintains, where the task will be to collaborate with God to re-create the world to its original state. This will also bring about the healing of persons and the world the unification of subject and object, individual and society, heart and mind.

a prolific writer, both before his exile from Russia in 1922, and afterwards in the West
until his death in 1948. The 1978 IMKA Press "Berdiaev Bibliographie" by Tamara Klepinine lists a total
of 483 books and articles by Berdyaev, not including those "sans signature" or under
a pseudonym. A significant portion of this corpus or works remains difficult to find,
even in Russian, and remains untranslated into English. But the Internet has made for
dramatic changes.Much that was inaccessible is gradually becoming accessible, but scattered about and discovered often only by chance. Hence the need to attempt to "bring order into chaos", following the example set mankind the footsteps of the Divine Lord (though some chaos is necessary for life's destiny)...

He was often referred to as a Christian existentialist , though his thought differs in significant ways from the existentialism of Jean-Paul Sartre as well as other existential thinkers. Nevertheless, Berdyaev embraced key existential ideas, particularly that of freedom . For him freedom was the fundamental metaphysical reality upon which all else is based. From the primary notion of freedom he developed his own existential interpretation of ultimate truth in terms of subjectivity rather than objectivity. In doing this, he offered a critique of modern rationalism and instead vigorously defended the intrinsic value of the human person and the creative life of the spirit.

Now with a new introduction by Professor of Russian Maria Nemcova Banerjee, The Meaning Of History is a philosophical treatise by intellectual Nikolai Berdyaev, witness to two world wars, who survived arrest for political suspicion first by Czarist and then by Bolshevik police, who died in exile in France in 1948 doggedly pursuing his studies and analysis to the end. Observing the philosophy of history as a field that formed the foundations of Russian national consciousness, Berdyaev discusses celestial ce·les·tial

Roots of the Catholic Worker Movement: Saints and Philosophers who Influenced Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin Nicholas Berdyaev, Prophet for the Catholic Worker Movement Materialism Destroys the Eternal Spirit by Nicholas Berdyaev, with an introduction by Mark and Louise Zwick This is the third article in a series on the saints and philosophers who influenced Peter Maurin and Dorothy Day in developing the Catholic Worker. Nicholas Berdyaev (l874-l948) was one of the great personalists and a "particular prophet" in the life of the Catholic Worker movement, one who with the gift of his genius explored the meaning of the life of the spirit in the twentieth century (William Miller, A Harsh and Dreadful Love, Doubleday, l974). Another important theme in Berdyaev's works which found an echo in Peter Maurin and in the CW movement was an understanding of history quite different from that of most historians and political philosophers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Berdyaev's view of history is beyond time. For him history has nothing to do with material success, with progress or achievement, or with seeking the idolatries of power, lust or comfort. Berdyaev understood that in the Incarnation and Redemption Christ stands at the center of history and that the human person, made in the image and likeness of God, is meant to participate with God in the building of the New Creation. The following are excerpts from the writings of Berdyaev: Materialism Destroys the Eternal Spirit
