He proved to be a popular lecturer not just in religion but also in philosophy, and was elected head of the philosophy department in 1818. Bolzano alienated many faculty and church leaders with his teachings of the social waste of militarism and the needlessness of war. He urged a total reform of the educational, social, and economic systems that would direct the nation's interests toward peace rather than toward armed conflict between nations. Upon his refusal to recant his beliefs, Bolzano was dismissed from the university in 1819. INTRODUCTION: SOME APPRECIATIONS OF BOLZANO
"[The Wissenschaftslehre ] in its treatment of the logical 'theory of elements' far surpasses anything that world-literature has to offer in the way of a systematic sketch of logic. Bolzano did not, of course, expressly discuss or support any independent demarcation of pure logic in our sense, but he provided one de facto in the first two volumes of his work, in his discussions of what underlay a

His logical analysis of mathematical problems made him a pioneer in geometry and calculus. His philosophical applications of logic contributed to the development of analytic philosophy and phenomenology . In his most well-known work, Theory of Science, he attempted to provide a logical and systematic way to approach all the sciences. His theological contributions are less notable; although he was ordained as a Catholic priest, he harbored many doubts about Christianity.

    Early life
Bolzano was born in 1781, into a devout Roman Catholic family in Prague , which was then part of the Austrian Empire. His father, Bernard Pompeius Bolzano, was a native of Lombardy who had moved to Prague at a young age and had married Maria Cecelia Maurer, the German-speaking daughter of a Prague merchant. Bernard was the fourth of their twelve children and one of only two who lived to adulthood. He was strongly influenced by his Catholic upbringing both at home and at school. His father was a highly charitable man who expressed his religious beliefs through his philanthropic efforts, which included the founding an orphanage. Young Bernard also attended a school run by the Roman Catholic order of the Piarists. These experiences left Bolzano more impressed by the humanitarian aspects of Christianity than its doctrines.

Bolzano, Bernard key , Czech philosopher, mathematician, and theologian. Though as a Catholic priest he himself was primarily concerned with religious and ethical questions, he is known today for his work in philosophy, methodology of science, mathematics, and logic. Among his important works are Wissenschaftslehre (1837), an attempt at a complete theory of science and knowledge; Rein analytischer Beweis (1817), which contains an early successful attempt to free differential calculus from the concept of infinitesimals; and Theorie der reelen Zahlen, which laid the cornerstone of the theory of real numbers. He tried to devise a geometry without the use of Euclid's parallel postulate, developed a fairly complete theory of real functions, and worked at an ideal language. However, his work did not attract the attention of his contemporaries and thus did not influence the development of mathematics. The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia
