He contributed to a number of different areas in philosophy, but his primary contribution was his philosophy of mind, in the broad sense of the term. His philosophy indicates influences from Aristotle Scholasticism , and positivism of the nineteenth century. Brentano was a charismatic teacher and had a number of notable students including Edmund Husserl Alexius Meinong , Christian von Ehrenfels, Kasimir Twardowski, and others. A number of his ideas such as the concept of intentionality , which he derived from the Scholasticism , and the concept of philosophy as the study of consciousness had a significant influence on Husserl. Husserl’s early formulation of phenomenology was based upon these ideas from Brentano. Lujo Brentano , an eminent economist and social reformer, is his brother.

A new introduction by Peter Simons places Brentano's work in the context of current philosophical thought. Brentano, Franz
Franz Brentano (1838-1917), German philosopher and psychologist, taught in the University of Vienna from 1874 to 1894. He is the author of Psychology from an Empirical Standpoint (first published in 1874), and is principally remembered for his formulation of the so-called Brentano thesis or doctrine of intentionality, according to which what is characteristic of mental phenomena is their INTENTIONALITY or the "mental inexistence of an object." Logical Investigations (1970), and its application by Husserl to the categories of language led to the development of CATEGORIAL GRAMMAR in the work of Lesniewski and in Ajdukiewicz (1967). The overarching context of all Brentano's writings is the psychology and ontology of Aristotle. Aristotle conceived perception and thought as processes whereby the mind abstracts sensory and intelligible forms from external substances. Impressed by the successes of corpuscularism in physics, Brentano had grown sceptical of the existence of any external substances corresponding to our everyday cognitive contents. He thus suspended belief in external substances but retained the Aristotelian view of cognition as a process of combining and separating forms within the mind. It is in these terms that we are to understand his view that "[e]very mental phenomenon includes something as object within itself" (1973). Brentano distinguishes three sorts of ways in which a subject may be conscious of an object:
  • In presentation. Here the subject is conscious of the object or object-form, and has it before his mind, without taking up any position with regard to it, whether in sensory experience or via concepts.

(b Brentano was ordained a Roman Catholic priest (1864) and appointed Privatdozent Brentano then began writing one of his best-known and most influential works, Psychologie vom empirischen Standpunkte (1874; "Psychology from an Empirical Standpoint"), in which he tried to present a systematic psychology that would be a science of the soul. Concerned with mental processes , or acts, he revived and modernized the scholastic philosophical theory of "intentional existence," or, as he called it, "immanent objectivity"; in psychical phenomena, he held, there is a "direction of the mind to an object" e.g., one sees something. The object seen is said to "inexist" within the act of seeing or to have "immanent objectivity." He suggested that, fundamentally, the mind can refer to objects by perception and ideation, including sensing and imagining; by judgment, including acts of acknowledgment, rejection, and recall; and by loving or hating, which take into account desires, intentions, wishes, and feelings. The ideas expressed in the Psychologie formed the credo of his followers and became the starting point of their work.

The School of Franz Brentano Nijhoff International Philosophy Series , Vol 52) by Liliana Albertazzi (Editor), Massimo Libardi (Editor), Roberto Poli (Editor) The School of Franz Brentano provides a fascinating picture of both the life and thought of Franz Brentano and his main pupils. The volume is divided into three sections, presenting: 1. a detailed reconstruction of Brentano's life and contributions to philosophy; 2. separate studies of Brentano's most important students (von Ehrenfels, Husserl, Marty, Meinong, Stumpf, and Twardowski); 3. separate studies of the main philosophical problems or areas of Brentano's writings. The book is the first wide reconstruction of Brentano's intellectual legacy, with topics such as philosophy of mind, ontology, philosophy of language, logic and theory of values.
