    Biography:
Edmund Burke (1729-1797) was a British statesman and philosopher whose contribution to the philosophy of aesthetics was to argue that our enjoyment of beauty is not based upon any measure of intellectual clarity. Instead, it is based upon our imaginations being engaged by the qualities of obscurity and suggestiveness. Burke is also well known for his book Reflections on the Revolution in France , which is an important statement of conservative political principles and ideas. In it he criticizes the principles behind the social contract theory and argues instead for greater respect for the rights and privileges contained in traditional value systems. The Philosophy of Politics and the Philosophy of Law are often studied separately, but they are presented here jointly because they both come back to the same thing: the study of force. Politics is the study of political force in the general community, while jurisprudence is the study of how laws can and should be used to achieve political and social goals.

First published Mon Feb 23, 2004; substantive revision Thu Jan 14, 2010 Edmund Burke, author of Reflections on the Revolution in France , is known to a wide public as a classic political thinker: it is less well understood that his intellectual achievement depended upon his understanding of philosophy and use of it in the practical writings and speeches by which he is chiefly known. The present essay explores the character and significance of the use of philosophy in his thought.

    Early life
Burke, the son of a solicitor, entered Trinity College, Dublin, in 1744 and moved to London in 1750 to begin his studies at the Middle Temple. There follows an obscure period in which Burke lost interest in his legal studies, was estranged from his father, and spent some time wandering about England and France. Edmund Burke Edmund Burke (January 12, 1729 – July 9, 1797) was an Anglo-Irish statesman, author, orator, political theorist, and philosopher , who served for many years in the British House of Commons as a member of the Whig party. He is chiefly remembered for his support of the American colonies in the struggle against King George III that led to the American Revolution and for his strong opposition to the French Revolution in Reflections on the Revolution in France (1790). The latter made Burke one of the leading figures within the conservative faction of the Whig party (which he dubbed the "Old Whigs"), in opposition to the pro-revolutionary "New Whigs," led by Charles James Fox. Edmund Burke’s ideas influenced the fields of aesthetics and political theory. His early work on aesthetics, Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful (1757), explored the origins of these two fundamental concepts, relating them respectively to fear of death and to love of society. ’s first published writings were periodical essays for the Reformer, a miscellany largely produced by Burke himself at the close of his undergraduate career at Trinity College, Dublin. In the very first paragraph of this paper, which ran to 13 numbers from January to April 1748, Burke asserts the link between taste and morals that underlies his writings for nearly 50 years: “the morals of a Nation have so great Dependance on their taste and Writings, that the fixing the latter, seems the first and surest Method of establishing the former.”
In 1758 a more significant opportunity opened for him in London as editor of the Annual Register. Burke wrote the Register’s original articles singlehandedly until at least 1764. This job had three main consequences for his later writings and speeches. The Annual Register reprinted a broad variety of historical, scientific, antiquarian, and literary research, whose scope is later revealed in Burke’s wide-ranging imagery, diction, and general knowledge. Second, the ideas he expressed in his book reviews developed into longstanding principles which guided his entire life. In 1759 he criticized Rousseau’s “satire on civilized society,” for instance, because it would “unsettle our notions of right and wrong.” He returns to this theme in the Letter to a Member of the National Assembly (1791), where he charges that Rousseau’s “paradoxical morality…led directly” to the cultural revolution that preceded the French Revolution.

A long-time member of the House of Commons, Edmund Burke was the author of R eflections on the Revolution in France (1790), a classic of modern conservatism, and Philosophic Enquiry into the Origin of our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful (1758), which traced aesthetic judgments to feelings of pleasure and pain. Burke’s mother was Catholic. She wedded a prominent Dublin attorney, who evidently converted to Protestantism only a few years before Edmund was born. Throughout his life Edmund, though ostensibly belonging to the established Anglican church, retained Catholic connections, which were held against him by the British establishment. He graduated from Trinity College, Dublin, and studied law for a while at Middle Temple in London. He married an Irish Catholic in 1757, and some scholars believe he may have practiced Catholicism during this rather obscure period in his life. He supported his close-knit family through Grub Street journalism, editing a periodical entitled Annual Register from 1758-76.
