Albert Camus Albert Camus was born in Mondovi, Algeria on November 7, 1913. He would learn early the sometimes senseless nature of life. Within a year of Camus' birth, his father, an impoverished agricultural worker of Alsatian origin, was killed in Europe fighting at the first battle of the Marne. His mother moved the family to the Belcourt district of Algiers where they lived with her mother who had also been widowed. In primary school, Camus was fortunate enough to cross paths with a teacher, Louis Germain, who recognized the young boy's intellectual potential and encouraged him in his studies. By the time Camus received his in 1930, he was reading the likes of Gide, Montherlant and Malraux. After taking a short break necessitated by a bout with tuberculosis, Camus continued his education at the University of Algiers. During this period, he supported himself by a wide variety of jobs which included giving private lessons, working for the Meteorological Institute, and selling spare parts for cars. It was also during this period that he, along with a number of other young left-wing intellectuals, founded the Théâtre du Travail in Algiers. Camus' first experience as a playwright came when this group created a "collective play" entitled After earning a degree in philosophy, Camus relocated to Metropolitan France and took up journalism. In 1938, he accepted a post with the left-wing newspaper

In early 1995, I began surfing the 'net. Much to my surprise, I found no pages listed in any of the major web indexes at the time dedicated to the works of Albert Camus. I decided someone needed to create a page to link bits of information together. I don't claim to be an expert, and I haven't read much Camus since then, but this page carries on. Every time I think I'll pull it down, I check the stats and see that more than 7,000 people a month are clicking through this page, so I keep it here. Recovered from the wreckage of the crash was the unfinished manuscript of Camus' latest novel, The First Man. In 1957, Camus had been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in recognition of his most famous novels, The Outsider and The Plague Fifty years after its original publication The Outsider is still France's best-selling novel this century. In October 1995, The First Man was finally published in English, thirty five years after Camus' death. His daughter, Catherine Camus, elected to publish the manuscript unedited. Its drafts have been organised into the completed text of the novel and authorial notes which supplement its progression and development. As such, The First Man shows the rarely glimpsed process of a work in progress. The novel itself is a deeply autobiographical meditation upon Camus' poverty-stricken childhood and fatherless family within Algeria at the turn of the century. While it remains unfinished, much of the text possesses Camus' characteristic lucidity and sensuality, clearly demonstrating that his best writing was yet to come before his tragic and untimely death at the age of 47.

With great technical skill, he stressed man's need to carry out responsibilities in a fight against social evils. His books include "The Stranger," 1942 and "The Fall," 1957. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1957. His poverty-stricken mother raised Camus in Algiers, after his father died in World War I. He attended public schools and worked hard to be accepted into the University of Algiers. As a teenager, he enjoyed sports, such as swimming and football. He was a tall, thin man with dark hair and blue eyes. In 1935 he managed a theatrical company, L'Equipe, and was an active part of the intellectual community. His first book "L'Envers Et l'Endroit," a collection of personal essays, was published in Algiers in 1937. In France Camus played an important role in the renaissance movement, writing for the underground press, "Combat." As the editor, he wrote a series of moving and deeply philosophical essays. Camus resigned from the paper in 1945 to devote more time to his writing. In 1946, he made a lecture tour of the United States where he published his novel, "The Stranger."

They also produced plays by Malraux, Synge, Gide and Dostoevski. The theatre company was intended to produce socialist plays specifically for the audience of Algerian workers. In 1938 Camus became a journalist for an anti-colonialist newspaper called the Alger-Republicain. He reported specifically on the state of the Muslims of the Kabylie region, attracting public notice and finally rousing the Algerian government to take action. Abridged versions of these articles were published again much later in Actuelles III Camus left Algiers in 1940 for Paris, hoping to work as a reporter for the leftist press. This same year the German army invaded France, so he returned to North Africa. He found a teaching position in Oran, and was married for his second time to Francine Faure, a mathematics instructor. Camus was a self-proclaimed pacifist, writing openly against war in Europe, and this put him in danger at this time due to the political right's rise in power in both France and Algeria. His stay in Oran was short-lived, as he was "advised" to leave Algeria in March 1940, having been declared a "threat to national security". During the war, Camus published a number of works which have become associated with his doctrine of the absurd: his idea it is impossible to make rational sense of one's experience, and human life is made meaningless by mortality. He writes: "This heart within me I can feel, and I judge that it exists. This world I can touch, and I likewise judge that it exists. There ends all my knowledge, and the rest is construction."
