Verano 1987
CORNELIUS CASTORIADIS.

29. Entrevista A Castoriadis

Castoriadis, Cornelius, 1922-1997 - John Barker
Submitted by Red Marriott on Jul 8 2006 19:48 tags: An obituary and overview of the work of Cornelius Castoriadis, whose early theoretical writings had a strong influence on the UK Solidarity group, among others. John Barker is an ex-member of Solidarity and the Angry Brigade. Cornelius Castoriadis
(By John Barker) Cornelius Castoriadis, who died the day after Christmas 1997, was a tough and tough-minded intellectual and survivor of revolutionary politics who, more recently, gained considerable academic recognition. He was born in Constantinople and would have been part of the Greek exodus at that time of mutual ethnic cleansing between Greece and Turkey. By his own reckoning he began reading philosophy at the age of 13, an activity soon politicized by taking place under the dictatorship of General Metaxas. He became a member of the Greek Communist Party at the age of 17 but three years later, when the Party was gaining real power through its somewhat tortured relation with the mass resistance organisation EAM-ELAS, he became a Trotskyist. Another 3 years later in 1945, so the bald details go, he fled to Paris on both Fascist and Communist death lists. I do not know what then it can have meant to be a Trotskyist in 1942-5 Greece, but am sure it would have been quite possible to be on the two death-lists of both sides. In Paris he got a job as an economist with the OECD, and from then on, with a three year break and later as a psychoanalyst, always worked professionally as he put it. At the same time, despite the professional job he did not gain French citizenship until 1970, which meant that in principle he could have been deported at any time with 24 hours notice. I mention this since most Western European revolutionary socialists have not had such experience, and to forestall any jeers or sneers at this man.

Cornelius Castoriadis was born March 11, 1922, in Constantinople (Istanbul) and his family moved soon after to Athens. After earning degrees in Political Science, Economics and Law from the University of Athens, he moved to Paris to continue his studies in 1945. He had been an active Trotskyist in Athens but broke with the Trotskyists in Paris in 1948 to and joined Claude Lefort and others in founding the group and journal " Socialisme ou Barbarie " (1949-1966), which eventually included Jean-Franois Lyotard as a member. At the same time, he worked as an economist at the OECD until 1970. Although he was active in the political movements of the 1960s, his interests shifted from direct political action and revolution towards seeking to understand the relationship of the human individual to social formations. This led him towards more philosophical and psychoanalytic understandings of human social and political life and he trained as a psychoanalyst and began to practice in 1974. In his 1975 work L'institution imaginaire de la socit (Imaginary Institution of Society) and in Les carrefours du labyrinthe (Crossroads in the Labyrinth) published in 1978, Castoriadis began to develop his distinctive understanding of historical change as the emergence of irrecoverable otherness that must always be socially instituted and named to be recognized. Otherness emerges in part from the activity of the psyche itself. Creating external social institutions that give stable form to what Castoriadis terms the
