Animado por la publicación de un ensayo suyo en el Journal of Speculative Philosophy en abril de 1882 y por el apoyo de Torrey, Dewey se inscribió en 1882 en la Johns Hopkins University. Biography
John Dewey, the third of four sons, was born on October 20, 1859 to Archibald Sprague and Lucina Artemesia Rich Dewey in Burlington, Vermont. John Dewey attended public schools in Burlington and then attended the University of Vermont in Burlington. Scottish realism was the primary school of thought at the University of Vermont when Dewey was a student there. His rejection of the ideas of realism is thought to have prompted his interest in philosophy. John Dewey's significance for informal educators lays in a multiple areas. First, his belief that education must engage and enlarge experience has continued to be a significant idea in informal education. Secondly Dewey fought for the exploration of thinking and reflection. Third, his concern with interaction and environments for learning provide a continuing framework for practice. Last, his passion for democracy. he was a big proponent of education for all- because of this he was also looking for many ways to incorporate education in all aspects of life. Upon his graduation from college in 1879, Dewey taught high school for two years. During this time, Dewey published his first essay

John Dewey’s The Quest for Certainty John Dewey (1859-1952) was an American philosopher who taught at many universities, including Michigan, Minnesota, Chicago, and Columbia. He wrote extensively on the philosophy of education and on epistemology. He also wrote on logic, ethics, and aesthetics, and he was recognized as a founder (with C.S. Peirce and William James) of the philosophy of pragmatism. His books included The School and Society Democracy and Education Human Nature and Conduct The Public and its Problems Experience and Nature The Quest for Certainty Ethics Art as Experience Logic: The Theory of Inquiry Freedom and Culture (1939), and Knowing and the Known (1949, with Arthur F. Bentley). The Quest for Certainty: A Study of the Relation of Knowledge and Action (1929) is based on the Gifford Lectures (1929) that Dewey delivered at the University of Edinburgh. The lectures are concerned with the difference between knowledge and belief, and they consider the question of how knowledge and belief can contribute to practical action. The text is divided into eleven chapters: 1) ”Escape from Peril,” 2) “Philosophy’s Search for the Immutable,” 3) “Conflict of Authorities,” 4) “The Art of Acceptance and the Art of Control,” 5) “Ideas at Work,” 6) “The Play of Ideas,” 7) “The Seat of Intellectual Authority,” 8) “The Naturalization of Intelligence,” 9) “The Supremacy of Method,” 10) “The Construction of Good,” and 11) “The Copernican Revolution.”

    Dewey, John
    Dewey, John, Dewey's original philosophy, called instrumentalism, bears a relationship to the utilitarian and pragmatic schools of thought. Instrumentalism holds that the various modes and forms of human activity are instruments developed by human beings to solve multiple individual and social problems. Since the problems are constantly changing, the instruments for dealing with them must also change. Truth, evolutionary in nature, partakes of no transcendental or eternal reality and is based on experience that can be tested and shared by all who investigate. Dewey conceived of democracy as a primary ethical value, and he did much to formulate working principles for a democratic and industrial society. In education his influence has been a leading factor in the abandonment of authoritarian methods and in the growing emphasis upon learning through experimentation and practice. In revolt against abstract learning, Dewey considered education as a tool that would enable the citizen to integrate culture and vocation effectively and usefully. Dewey actively participated in movements to forward social welfare and woman's suffrage, protect academic freedom, and effect political reform. Among his writings, which are concerned with almost all philosophical fields except metaphysics, are

John Dewey was a leading proponent of the American school of thought known as pragmatism , a view that rejected the dualistic epistemology and metaphysics of modern philosophy in favor of a naturalistic approach that viewed knowledge as arising from an active adaptation of the human organism to its environment. On this view, inquiry should not be understood as consisting of a mind passively observing the world and drawing from this ideas that if true correspond to reality, but rather as a process which initiates with a check or obstacle to successful human action, proceeds to active manipulation of the environment to test hypotheses, and issues in a re-adaptation of organism to environment that allows once again for human action to proceed. With this view as his starting point, Dewey developed a broad body of work encompassing virtually all of the main areas of philosophical concern in his day. He also wrote extensively on social issues in such popular publications as the New Republic , thereby gaining a reputation as a leading social commentator of his time.

ROGRESSIVE EDUCATION On the Origin of Species (1859) convinced him that the only constant in life was change or growth (the term Dewey preferred). Therefore, Dewey held that the purpose of formal education was not to prepare children for any fixed goal, but rather that schools should be devoted to encouraging children to grow and to prepare them to continue to grow and develop as adults in the uncertain future that they would face. Childhood was not merely a prelude to adulthood; it was a stage of development that was important and valuable in its own right. Accordingly, schooling should be based on meeting the needs of children, as children, rather than only striving to prepare them for adulthood. Dewey faulted contemporary schools for regarding children as empty vessels to be filled with intellectual content. Schools treated pupils as passive learners. Dewey argued that children were naturally curious and that outside of school they learned through activities. They came to school with many interests, which he classified in his 1899 publication The School and Society The Child and the Curriculum
