Definition: Mircea Eliade, usually associated with the "Chicago School" of religious studies, was a Romanian-born scholar whose work has become influential in the academic study of religion. According to Eliade, religion cannot be studied or understood through reductionist methodlogies in psychology or sociology - instead, it can only be understood on its own terms. Eliade also argued that the one thing which unites all religions and which differentiates religions from other human beliefs or pursuits is some irreducible element of the "sacred" in human experience. Mircea Eliade (1907-1986)
As described in the Chicago note, Mircea Eliade is a marginal figure in the Friesian tradition. However, after Eliade died, certain criticisms were leveled at him that are noteworthy and deserving of serious attention. The substantive criticism was that the kind of theory of religion represented by Eliade, and for that matter Rudolf Otto himself, leads logically and directly to the neo-pagan amoralism of the Nazis, and furthermore that Eliade actually directly promoted just such a thing in Romania during or before World War II. Such accusations are of great concern. Nor are they unfamiliar, since these are precisely the problems many people (very properly) have with Martin Heidegger As with criticisms of Heidegger, in the course of this two things should be kept separate: the nature of the theory that Eliade is said to promote, and then the nature of Eliade's political involvement as a possible application of the theory. Eliade, of course, is coming out of the kind of theory found in Otto , which is only minimally different from the philosophy of religion in Nelson and Fries; and Nelson and Fries are in many ways still four-square Kantians. Otto's

(b . March 9, 1907, Bucharest, Rom.d. April 22, 1986, Chicago, Ill., U.S.), historian of religions and man of letters, distinguished for his researches in the symbolic language used by various religious traditions and for his attempt to reduce their meaning to underlying primordial myths that provide the basis for mystical phenomena. Eliade took an M.A. in philosophy from the University of Bucharest in 1928. He studied Sanskrit and Indian philosophy at the University of Calcutta (1928-31) and then lived for six months in the ashram (hermitage) of Rishikesh, Himalaya. Returning to Romania, he earned his Ph.D. in 1933 with the dissertation Yoga: Essai sur les origines de la mystique indienne History of Religions Fundamentally, Eliade considered religious experience in traditional and contemporary societies as credible phenomena that he termed hierophanies i.e., manifestations of the sacred in the world). His researches traced the forms that these hierophanies have taken throughout the world and through time. Eliade's essential interpretation of traditional religious cultures and his analysis of the forms of mystical experience characterize his major works: Patterns of Comparative Religion The Myth of the Eternal Return ), and

At the time of his death, Eliade was Sewell L. Avery Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History of Religions at the University of Chicago Divinity School, to which he had come from his native Romania as Visiting Professor in 1956. The crowning achievement of Eliade's scholarly work appeared posthumously; he is Editor-in-Chief of the 16-volume Encyclopedia of Religions , published by Macmillan in 1987. According to one biographer (Olson 1992), Eliade interpreted his own life as a paradox: an attempt to live in history and beyond it; to be involved in current events yet withdrawn from them; to be Rumanian and live in a foreign land; to be a literary figure and a scholar of religion. Among the myriad insights offered in the more than 150 scholarly books and novels Eliade has written is a paradoxical intertwining of the sacred and the profane (also the title of one of his most important books, a development upon a fundamental notion of Émile Durkheim). Rather than dichotomous categories, Eliade argues that these two concepts are modes of being that are embedded in a singular human experience. One discerns the manifestations of the sacred within ordinary human objects, myths, and rituals. Moreover, this discernment emerges from the cosmos and comes to the individual as a form of revelation (heirophany): "Something sacred shows itself to us."
