Philosophy Department
Columbia's Philosophy Department has had an illustrious past with figures ranging from John Dewey and Ernest Nagel to Isaac Levi, Arthur Danto, and Sidney Morgenbesser shaping its interests and methods in the discipline. At present it is distinguished by its ecumenical ethos, with advanced research being pursued in the wide swath of subjects in analytical philosophy as well as in the history of Western Philosophy British, American, and from the European continent. Given its distinguished pragmatist heritage, the department - unsurprisingly - does not think of the subject of philosophy as a merely self-standing discipline, but as being continuous with other disciplines (logic, mathematics, physics, biology, psychology and economics on the one hand, and history, literature, law, political science, art, and music on the other). There is much interest too in responding, as philosophers, to pressing political, social, and cultural issues in the immediate as well as global environment. In 2001 the department was united with the Philosophy Department at Barnard College. We now function as a single department with shared policies and standards.

Book Summary of The Ethics Of Medical Choice (social Change In Western Europe)
In the medical field in general, and in the one of organ transplants in particular, what effect can the institutional agents' perceptions of equity have? "The Ethics of Medical Choice" shows through examples in France, Germany, Norway and the United States, the way in which the issue of equality of access by potential beneficiaries is handled. It emerges from this controversial study that universality of access is still a long way off. top

People are egoistic rational agents. 2. If people are egoistic rational agents then the provision of public goods is a Prisoners' Dilemma (PD). 3. If the provision of public goods is a PD then, in the absence of coercion, public goods won't be provided. 4. Such coercion can only be provided by the state, not by an anarchy. 5. Therefore public goods won't be provided in an anarchy. 6. Therefore the state is necessary for the provision of public goods. 7. The provision of public goods is necessary for a "good" society. 8. Therefore an anarchy won't be a "good" society. 9. Therefore the state is necessary for a "good" society. ****

Rationality and the Emotions Jon Elster In an earlier paper (Elster, 1989 a ), I discussed the relation between rationality and social norms. Although I did mention the role of the emotions in sustaining social norms, I did not focus explicitly on the relation between rationality and the emotions. That relation is the main topic of the present paper, with social norms in a subsidiary part. Economists, as we know, have done nothing of the kind. Recent economic work on the emotions (Hirshleifer, 1987; Frank, 1988) focuses exclusively on the role of the emotions in sustaining (or preventing) cooperative interactions. No economist to my knowledge has considered the emotions in their main role as providers of pleasure, happiness, satisfaction, or utility. To put it crudely, economists have totally neglected the most important aspect of their subject matter . No doubt there are reasons for this neglect. One is the lack of a metric. If you asked someone whether he prefers shame or grief - whether he would rather be caught cheating at an exam or have his girl friend leave him - he would probably be at a loss for an answer. The emotions themselves, in fact, interfere with our ability to observe them. (Montaigne cites Petrarch to the effect that 'He who can describe how his heart is ablaze is burning on a small pyre'.) Another reason - which ought, however, to be a challenge rather than an excuse - may be the lack of good theories of how emotions are triggered and transformed in encounters with the world. A further reason may be that

Book Summary of Closing the Books: Transitional Justice in Historical Perspective by Jon Elster
This Book Summary written by: Eric Brahm, Conflict Research Consortium In this book, Elster provides a significant contribution to our understanding of transitional justice by identifying patterns across time and space. The first part of the book provides some background on the universe of cases. Because they are less well-known and to illustrate they are not strictly a modern phenomenon, extended attention is paid to two transitional episodes in ancient Athens and post-Napoleonic restorations in France. There are short treatments of a range of more familiar, mostly 20th century, examples. From these cases, Elster suggests a classification system. The nature and duration of the outgoing regime and of the process of transitional justice are identified as important sources of variation. This initial overview of cases serves to set up part two of the book, which aims to understand the sources of variation in transitional justice. Transitional justice can range along a continuum from pure legal justice to pure political justice with various administrative measures falling somewhere in between. In fact, any society, according to Elster, answers a series of questions in determining its transitional justice policy. First, it must determine whether to do anything about the past. Provided the answer to this question is yes, a series of additional substantive questions arise:
