Gadamer was born in Marburg Germany , as the son of a pharmaceutical chemistry professor who later also served as the rector of the university there. He resisted his father's urging to take up the natural sciences and became more and more interested in the humanities . He grew up and studied philosophy in Breslau under Richard Hönigswald , but soon moved back to Marburg to study with the Neo-Kantian philosophers Paul Natorp and Nicolai Hartmann . He defended his dissertation in 1922.

Gadamer's Aesthetics
First published Wed Jun 13, 2007
  • Aesthetics is not the study of specific types of subjective pleasures derived from art. It is a study of what objectively informs our subjective awareness of art. Hermeneutical aesthetics seeks to break through the pleasurable distractions of aesthetic consciousness in order to disclose the cultural and linguistic realities that manifest themselves within it. Hermeneutical aesthetics presupposes phenomenological involvement with the subject matters of art rather than disinterested detachment. Hermeneutical aesthetics regards aesthetic appearance not as a distraction from the real but as the vehicle through which real subject matters reveal themselves. It over-turns the notion that art works are at one remove from reality. Hermeneutical aesthetics is dialogical in character. It recognises that practitioner and theoretician share in bringing a subject matter to light and plays down any theory/ practice division in the arts. Interpretation is a means to a work's realisation. Hermeneutical aesthetics is not a theory of art per se , more a set of practical contemplative notes for enhancing one's encounter with art. The end of hermeneutical aesthetics is not to arrive at a concept of art but to deepen our experience of art. In hermeneutical aesthetics, theory is deployed to deepen contemplation of artworks rather than to categorise their nature.

In the meantime, from 1934-35, Gadamer held a temporary professorship at Kiel, and then, in 1939, took up the Directorship of the Philosophical Institute at the University of Leipzig, becoming Dean of the Faculty in 1945, and Rector in 1946, before returning to teaching and research at Frankfurt-am-Main in 1947. In 1949, he succeeded Karl Jaspers at Heidelberg, officially retiring (becoming Professor Emeritus) in 1968. Following his retirement, he traveled extensively, spending considerable time in North America, where he was a visitor at a number of institutions and developed an especially close and regular association with Boston College in Massachusetts.

Reason in the Age of Science (1983) The Idea of the Good (1986) The Relevance of the Beautiful (1986) Biography: Hans-Georg Gadamer's primary interest was hermeneutics - the study of the meaning of a text. According to Gadamer, what a text means depends most fundamentally upon two things: the historical situations of the author and that of the interpreter or reader. This is an "existential encounter" between two perspectives and two sets of expectations, something which makes any sort of interpretation possible in the first place. Reading and interpreting is not simply a matter of becoming immersed in a text; rather, it also involves a great deal of self-reflection and growing awareness of one's own mind and situation. Because of this, every reading becomes grounded in a unique context - after all, even though the author remains the same, every reader is unique. Thus, no single reading can be claimed as a definitive or final interpretation of the text and the result is a "virtual dialogue" that goes on for as long as there are books and readers.
