Italian communist leader and Marxist theoretician, one of most original political thinkers of 20th century. He was brought up in poverty and continued his education with a scholarship at 20, a brilliant student. In his youth he was drawn to political activity in the Socialist Party. At the end of WW I he joined a left wing group who established a paper until he walked out from the Socialist Congress in January, 1921 to found a separate Communist party. With poor health, he spent much of his time in the sanatorium after 1922. On 11/08/1926, he was arrested by Mussolini's police and spent the rest of his life in prison, with the last six years in the hospital. Died from cerebral hemorrhage on April 27, 1937 in Rome, Italy.

Trefwoord(en): gramsci, filosofie, politieke theorie, italië Antonio Gramsci (1891-1937) is widely recognized as the most original political philosopher in the tradition of Western Marxism. Arrested and imprisoned by the Italian Fascist regime in 1926, he died before fully regaining his freedom. Yet his voluminous notebooks - thousands of pages of brlliant reflections on an extraordinary range of subjects, written within the confines of a tiny prison cell established an enduring intellectual legacy. The only complete critical edition of these seminal writings in English, to be published in five volumes, Columbia's Prison Notebooks are based on the authoritative Italian edition, Quaderni del Carcere, prepared by Valentino Gerratana. Gramsci's twenty-nine notebooks, touching on diverse topics in history, philosophy, sociology, political theory, religion, education, literature, folklore, and linguistics offer a rare glimpse into this great thinker's intellectual workshop. This long awaited second volume encompasses notebooks 3, 4, and 5, written during a period of intense activity for Gramsci between 1930 and 1932. Notebooks 3 and 5 display the characteristic breadth of his intellectual curiosity, with central threads including popular culture, Italian history, Americanism, and the Catholic Chruch as religious institution and formidable politico-ideological force. His reflections here also cover such subjects as the Renaissance and Reformation, language and linguistics, military and diplomatic history, and Japanese and Chinese culture.

Gramsci, Antonio
Italian, 1891–1937
For their range, perceptiveness, and originality Gramsci’s writings on politics and society have had a considerable influence on 20th-century thought. His early production, mainly articles of both a theoretical and an unashamedly propagandistic nature for the socialist daily Avanti! (Forward!) (1916–20) and for L’Ordine Nuovo (1919–24; The new order), were written in the heat of intense political involvement and were largely concerned with supporting workers’ rights and advocating revolutionary action on the Soviet model. Later collected in five volumes, they constitute a stirring record of political activism at a time of turmoil and precariousness in Italy as well as a fascinating sociohistorical document of the period.
His move away from Crocean “idealism†had begun early and, despite the continued admiration for and echoes of Croce to be found in the Prison Notebooks, the latter are seen by most commentators, whether favorable or otherwise to Gramsci’s ideas, as offering an essentially materialist analysis of history and socioeconomic structures and constituting a Marxist sociology of a new and original kind, interpretations of which have informed left-wing discussion in the cultural and political fields up to this day, both in Italy and abroad. The outstanding features of this new sociology are twofold: the positing of the lack of a “national-popular†tradition in Italy compared to other nations as the key to the kind of aulic, court-based cultural (especially literary) development that has characterized the country over the centuries; and the reassessment of the concept of and opportunity for political revolution in the West. In particular, following the failure of the

Gramsci's political and social writings occur in two periods, pre-prison (1910-1926) and prison (1929-35). His pre-prison writings tend to be politically specific, while his prison writings tend to be more historical and theoretical. Antonio Gramsci Last updated: 23 December 1998 One must speak for a struggle for a new culture, that is, for a new moral life that cannot but be intimately connected to a new intuition of life, until it becomes a new way of feeling and seeing reality
A given socio-historical moment is never homogeneous; on the contrary, it is rich in contradictions.
It is too easy to be original by doing the opposite of what everyone else is doing; this is just mechanical.
The people themselves are not a homogeneous cultural collectivity but present numerous and variously combined cultural stratifications which, in their pure form, cannot always be identified within specific historical popular collectivities.
Folklore should instead be studied as a 'conception of the world and life' implicit to a large extent in determinate (in time and space) strata of society and in opposition (also for the most part implicit, mechanical, and objective) to 'official' conceptions of the world (or in a broader sense, the conceptions of the cultured parts of historically determinate societies) that have succeeded one another in the historical process.
In history, in social life, nothing is fixed, rigid or definitive. And nothing ever will be.
