25. Martin Heidegger
Brief overview of Heidegger s contribution to philosophy.
http://www.regent.edu/acad/schcom/rojc/mdic/martin.html
Martin Heidegger
Martin Heidegger is widely regarded as one of the central figures of the existentialist movement and has had a major influence in the areas of phenomenology and ontology. His seminal work, Sein und Zeit , affected the philosophical and cultural landscape of continental Europe for decades. Heidegger's contribution to philosophy is remarkably monolithic in its devotion to metaphysics and ontology. Time and again Heidegger returned to the question, "what is the meaning of being?" One of Heidegger's later works The Question Concerning Technology (1977), deals with the issue of dehumanization in modern society, what Heidegger called the "darkening of the world." The book was based on four lectures delivered in 1949 and captured Heidegger's ontological approach to issues important to post-World War Europe. Heidegger was greatly concerned about technical nihilism, and for a time believed that Nazism could provide a solution. After the war, Heidegger described the catastrophe as, "the confrontation of European humanity with global technology" (Heim, 1993, p. 55). However, throughout his work, Heidegger is careful to approach technology with neither praise nor blame-neither as an optimist nor pessimist. Heidegger's concept of technology is not defined by things or processes. For Heidegger, "technology's essence is nothing technological" (1977, p. 4). Instead it is a system, Gestell , looming but undefined (Heim, p. 57).

Politics of Bodies and Spaces Machenschaft , alex (2005-01-27 04:05:02): Hallo dear readers, I wonder if there can be made links concerning Machenschaft to our present time. Do you see any possible connection to the world today? The word Machenschaft was "made" by Heidegger in the years 30. This was the time of the rising nazism. So, our time of democracy is much different. But still there is a possibility of connections. I like to rad tou on this subject. I myself think, that there could be a pipeline view today, which is the same as in these years. Thanks for answering. The "openness" in this state, that according to Heidegger underlies the understanding of existence, also concerns the "world" (Welt or Bedeutsamkeit). What are the limitations of this "world"? Is it to be understood as the totality of existence or could it have been meant as a "situation", perhaps a culture? ...

Rethinking Levinas on Heideger on Death [PDF]
Iain Thomson
Heidegger and Levinas both understood themselves as struggling to articulate the requisite ethical response to the great traumas of the twentieth century, and [...] if we compare their thinking at this level, we can better understand the ways in which Levinas - like all other important post-Heideggerian thinkers - genuinely diverges from Heidegger even while building on his thinking.
Following the Words: Heidegger's Account of Religion as Nachfolge [PDF]
Robert Metcalf
We find Heidegger emphasizing this hermeneutic character of Nachfolge when, rather than understanding religion in terms of doctrines or systems of teaching, he insists that what one follows in being religious are the words of the founder—that the words alone are what is decisive.

As a result, Heidegger developed a philosophy in which he argued that the nature of human existence involved active participation in the world, regardless of what that participation entailed. This he labeled "being there," in German Dasein Heidegger's philosophy is sometimes overshadowed by the enthusiastic support he showed for the Nazis and their education policies when he served as the Rector for the University of Freiburg 1933-34. He not only publicly converted to National Socialism, but he also deliberately distanced himself from Husserl, a Jewish philosopher whom he had previously admired. Because of this, Heidegger was suspended from all teaching duites after the war from 1945 to 1950. The exact scope and nature of his Nazi sympathies remains a matter of debate.

    35. Martin Heidegger And Environmental Ethics
Online scholarly paper by Tad Beckman.
    http://www2.hmc.edu/~tbeckman/personal/Heidart.html
MARTIN HEIDEGGER AND ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS After World War II, Martin Heidegger directed much of his thinking to technology and to the impact of technology on our perceptions of human life. One of the essays developed along this path was "The Question Concerning Technology." It is unfortunate that the essay is not widely read because it carries the critique of technology out of its usual context and form and delivers it into a new light where there is, perhaps, some progress to be made. Furthermore, the essay has special significance to environmental issues and, I believe, lays a new groundwork for an ethical approach to our relations with the environment. The tension in this essay comes into sharp focus, at the end, in Heidegger's preposterous suggestion that art may be what we need to carry us out of the dangerous epoch of technology. I say that this is "preposterous" on two grounds. First, our society thinks of technology as its distinctive talent and strength, not as a disaster. Second, our society sees art as frivolous and impotent in the "real world" of capitalistically generated technology. Heidegger himself recognized this irony and devoted the major portion of the essay to a careful analysis of the dangers that befall us in technology. His suggestion regarding art came late and remained poorly explicated. My intention, in this essay, is to interpret Heidegger's thesis about technology and art in the context of forming an ethical approach to the environment. What we shall discover along this path is that human nature, technology, and art are all intertwined in complex ways. At present, these relationships stand in great confusion and this confusion is part of the danger of our time. But this confusion can be grasped and dispensed with by thinking our way into the essence of our technological epoch. We may also ask, What is the essence of art that it might bear some relation to this epoch? And finally, What is our essence as human beings in relation to technology, art, and our natural environment?

    Introduction to Metaphysics
    Martin Heidegger
Anyone for whom the Bible is divine revelation and truth has the answer to the question "Why are there essents rather than nothing?" even before it is asked: everything that is, except God himself, has been created by Him. God himself, the increate creator, "is". One who holds to such faith can in a way participate in the asking of our question, but he cannot really question without ceasing to be a believer and taking all the consequences of such a step. He will only be able to act "as if"... On the one hand a faith that does not perpetually expose itself to the possibility of unfaith is no faith but merely a convenience: the believer simply makes up his mind to adhere to the traditional doctrine. This is neither faith nor questioning, but the indifference of those who can busy themselves with everything, sometimes even displaying a keen interest in faith as well as questioning. From the standpoint of faith our question is "foolish". Philosophy is this very foolishness. About the Author Ereignis: Comprehensive Heidgger Links

    39. Hegel & The Greeks
Aphoristic 1958 lecture on Hegel s interpretation of classical Greek doctrine.
    http://www.morec.com/hegelgre.htm
    Hegel and the Greeks
From Conference of the Academy of Sciences at Heidelberg, July 26, 1958 by Martin Heidegger Internet resource made available by More C The title of this conference can be transformed into a question: How does Hegel present the philosophy of the Greeks within the horizon of his philosophy? We could respond to such a question by historically studying Hegel's philosophy starting from the present point of view and by such means follow in step Hegel's historical presentation of Greek philosophy. Such a method provides historical research with historical connections. Such a project has its proper justification and utility. Nevertheless, something other is in play. By stating "the Greeks" we think back to the beginnings of philosophy; by stating "Hegel" we think to its completion. Hegel himself understands philosophy in such a manner. Within the title "Hegel and the Greeks" it is the whole of philosophy within its history that speaks, and that today in a times in which the collapse of philosophy becomes flagrant; because it has migrated into logistics, psychology, and sociology. These autonomous domains of research assure themselves of increasing importance and polymorphous influence as functional forms and performance instruments in the political-economic world, that is, in an essential sense, of the technical world. However, this collapse of philosophy, determined from afar and irresistibly, is not without further ado the end of thinking, but rather something else, however withdrawn from public accessibility. What follows will ponder for a while on this in an attempt to bring to mind the matter of thought. The matter of thought comes into play. Matter means here that which, by its nature, the presentation requires. To correspond to such requirement, it is necessary that we let ourselves gaze from out of the matter of thought and prepare for thought , determined by its own matter, to transform itself.
