These fundamental questions of our existence were debated in the Enlightenment by Locke, Shaftesbury, and Hutcheson. Daniel Carey provides an important new historical perspective on their discussion. At the same time, he explores the relationship between these founding arguments and contemporary disputes over cultural diversity and multiculturalism. Our own conflicting positions today reflect long-standing differences that emerged during the Enlightenment.

    Francis Hutcheson, 1694-1746
Francis (or Frances) Hutcheson was a professor of moral philosophy at Glasgow, one of the leaders of the Scottish Enlightenment and an early utilitarian thinker. Born in Armagh, Ireland, to a family of Scottish Presbyterians, Hutcheson went on to study at the University of Glasgow, receiving his degree in 1712 and obtaining his license to preach in 1716. However, there were widespread suspicions about about his "Irish" roots and his association with theologian John Simson (then under investigation by Scottish ecclesiastical courts). Hutcheson realized that any ministry he held in Scotland would not be a success, so he decided to abandon the church, return to Ireland and try his luck in academia. He taught for a while at the Dublin Academy, studying philosophy on the side and producing his famous Inquiry Hutcheson opposed Thomas Hobbes 's old thesis (later taken up by David Hume ) that human conceptions of "right" and "wrong", "virtue" and "vice", were rooted not in any theological or natural conceptions but purely in hedonic pleasure and pain calculations. Hutcheson accepted that virtue is often associated with pleasure and vice with pain, but tried to avoid Hobbes's conclusion that it all boils down to self-interest. Instead, Hutcheson argued that humans have natural and disinterested feelings of benevolence which guide their moral acts and an innate "moral sense" which informs their moral judgments. Inverting Hobbes's thesis, Hutcheson argued that virtue/vice comes first, pleasure/pain afterwards. We experience pleasurable sensations in doing or observing "virtuous" things because anything which complies with our natural benevolence or moral sense automatically yields pleasure. As benevolence involves giving pleasure to others, Hutcheson reaches the famous

    Philosopher and Teacher
Francis Hutcheson was born in the townland of Drumalig, Saintfield Parish on 8 August 1694, the son and grandson of ministers of dissenting congregations. Educated partly by his grandfather, partly at an academy, he entered the University of Glasgow in 1710, where he spent six years, at first in the study of philosophy, classics and general literature, and afterwards in the study of theology. Hutcheson received his license to preach within the Presbyterian church in 1716. However, some controversy about his appointment to a congregation in Scotland persuaded him to abandon the ministry and begin a life of academia. He spent the early part of his academic career teaching at the Academy of Dublin, while he privately pursued his philosophical studies. In 1725 his name became well known within influential academic circles with the publication of his Inquiry into the Original of our Ideas of Beauty and Virtue In 1729 he accepted the Chair of Moral Philosophy at the University of Glasgow. He remained at the University of Glasgow until his death, during a visit to Dublin, in 1746.

    Hutcheson
Francis Hutcheson (1694-1746) helped move aesthetics from theories about Beauty and Harmony, as characteristics of the world, to theories about the experience of the viewer. This eighteenth century shift is the source of all the theories about "the aesthetic sense" that have developed since the beginning of the eighteenth century. Hutcheson's philosophy was based on the empiricist thinking of John Locke, from whom he got the notion that all of our ideas come from experience. The idea of Beauty, according to Hutcheson, is actually the idea of a certain experience of pleasure that we have when we look at or listen to certain things. In other words, Beauty is in the Eye (or at least, in the Mind) of the beholder. The sense of beauty Hutcheson and his contemporaries called Taste . That which arouses the pleasurable experience we call Beauty, according to Hutcheson, is the perception of "unity in difference". Hutcheson distinguished between absolute Beauty , the kind of beauty to be found in nature, and relative Beauty , the beauty that characterizes art. The difference between the two is that art is imitative, and its beauty is produced by the similarity and contrast between the imitation and its original.

Although his philosophy covers a wide range of subjects, he is known primarily for his moral theory and his study of aesthetics . His ideas include the concepts of the "moral sense" and the "benevolent theory" of morals, the latter for which he stood in sharp opposition to Thomas Hobbes and other egoists . He anticipates the utilitarianism of Jeremy Bentham in his use of the phrase "the greatest happiness for the greatest number," and his influence can be traced through his students, which include David Hume and Adam Smith
