Jump to: navigation search Hutcheson, Francis (1694-1746): Scottish Philosopher. Francis Hutcheson was a Scottish philosopher and a leading figure of the Scottish Enlightenment. He was a key proponent of Moral Sense ethical theory and an early aesthetician. Hutcheson was born, 8 August 1694, in Drumalig, northern Ireland. The son and grandson of Presbyterian ministers, he was educated at the local dissenting academy and at the University of Glasgow. He studied in Glasgow from 1711, advancing to the study of theology in 1713. Graduating in 1717, he returned to Ireland where, after an inauspicious beginning as a minister—his entire congregation walked out to protest his liberal views—he opened an academy of his own in Dublin. His first publications were a series of letters to the Dublin Weekly Journal attacking the egoistic theories of Thomas Hobbes and Mandeville, Bernard In 1725, Hutcheson published two related essays as, An Inquiry into the Original of our Ideas of Beauty and Virtue . The (much) longer original title of this work made clear Hutcheson’s intention to defend the ideas of Shaftesbury, Anthony Ashley Cooper, Third Earl of

Hutcheson, Francis
(b . Aug. 8, 1694, Drumalig, County Down, Ire.d. 1746, Glasgow), Scots-Irish philosopher and major exponent of the theory of the existence of a moral sense through which man can achieve right action. The son of a Presbyterian minister, Hutcheson studied philosophy, classics, and theology at the University of Glasgow (1710-16) and then founded a private academy in Dublin in 1719. In 1729 he returned to Glasgow as professor of moral philosophy, a position he held until his death. Hutcheson was licensed as a preacher in 1719 by Irish Presbyterians in Ulster, but in 1738 the Glasgow presbytery challenged his belief that people can have a knowledge of good and evil without, and prior to, a knowledge of God. His standing as a popular preacher was undiminished, however, and the celebrated Scottish philosopher David Hume sought his opinion of the rough draft of the section "Of Human Morals" in Hume's Treatise of Human Nature Hutcheson's ethical theory was propounded in his Inquiry into the Original of Our Ideas of Beauty and Virtue (1725), in

From A Compendium of Irish Biography Index Hutcheson, Francis , LL.D., the reviver of speculative philosophy in Scotland, was born, 8th August 1694, at Downpatrick, where his father, John Hutcheson, was a minister. He studied theology and followed his father's profession of Presbyterian divine. His Inquiry into the Original of our Ideas on Beauty and Virtue , a work which made his name widely known, introduced him to the notice of such men as Archbishop King, Dr. Synge (Bishop of Elphin), and Viscount Molesworth. In 1728 he published his essay on The Passions and Affections , in virtue of which he was the following year promoted to the Chair of Moral Philosophy in Glasgow. His next works were text-books for the use of his classes. He died at Glasgow in 1747, aged 52. His System of Moral Philosophy His person is thus described: "A stature above middle size, a gesture and manner negligent and easy, but decent and manly, gave a dignity to his appearance. His complexion was fair and sanguine, and his features regular. His countenance and look bespoke sense, spirit, kindness, and joy of heart. His whole person and manner raised a strong prejudice in his favour at first sight." Sources 167a. Hutcheson, Francis: System of Moral Philosophy. 2 vols. London, 1755.
