The Forgetting of Air in Martin Heidegger (The Constructs Series) by Luce Irigaray , Mary Beth Mader (Translator). French theorist Luce Irigaray has become one of the twentieth century's most influential feminist thinkers. Among her many writings are three books (with a projected fourth) in which she challenges the Western tradition's construals of human beings' relations to the four elements-earth, air, fire, and water-and to nature. In answer to Heidegger's undoing of Western metaphysics as a "forgetting of Being," Irigaray seeks in this work to begin to think out the Being of sexedness and the sexedness of Being. This volume is the first English translation of L'oubli de l'air chez Martin Heidegger (1983). In this complex, lyrical, meditative engagement with the later work of the eminent German philosopher, Irigaray critiques Heidegger's emphasis on the element of earth as the ground of life and speech and his "oblivion" or forgetting of air.

Personally, I was glad to have studied Irigaray under the tutelage of an excellent professor, otherwise I would have, and I think many readers could, misread her drastically. Irigaray is simply not a clear and easy writer. Simply put, Irigaray's writing falls under the category of "difference feminism", rather than egalitarian feminism, like most of the liberal feminists we, particularly in North America, are used to. Instead of trying to subsume male and female experience under the same account, Irigaray plays up the differences between the embodied experiences of men and women she is not an essentialist, it

In the 1960s Irigaray participated in Jacques Lacan's psychoanalytic seminars. She trained as and became an analyst. In 1968 she received a Doctorate in Linguistics. From 1970-1974 she taught at the University of Vincennes. At this time Irigaray was a member of the EFP (Ecole Freudienne de Paris), a school directed by Lacan. In 1969 she analysed Antionette Fouque, a feminist leader of the time (MLF). Irigaray's second Doctorate thesis, "Speculum of the Other Woman," was closely followed by the cessation of her employment at the University of Vincennes. This damage to her career was cruelly ironic the phallocentric economy she condemned for excluding women swiftly silenced her. This illustrated her main point the machinery of phallocentrism can't accept sexual difference and the existence of a different female subjectivity.

The Prophet said that women totally dominate men of intellect and possessors of hearts. But ignorant men dominate women, for they are shackled by an animal ferocity.
They have no kindness, gentleness or love, since animality dominates their nature.
Love and kindness are human attributes; anger and sensuality belong to the animals.
She is the radiance of God, she is not your beloved. She is a creator
    - you could say that she is not created. -
    - Jalal al-Din Rumi
The 1969 female eunuch was nothing but womb. The 1997 female eunuch has no womb.
    - Germaine Greer Can men any longer write about women? Will our discourse always fallaciously subjectivise the male, as the Lacanian digit to the feminine zero? Andrea Dworkin and many others are insistent here. And yet the theologian must oppose such a closure no less stridently. No-one should claim a monological right to instruct the other sex concerning moral thought and conduct. Moreover, and no less seriously, we must object to that anti-dialogical aspect of the prevailing academic feminism which, supported by biometric footnotes, proposes that men have nothing to say here because truly 'female thought' is on every level categorically different from the thought of males. On this view, sexual difference not only creates a predisposition to be interested in certain kinds of issues, but fundamentally affects every way in which we handle concepts. Knowledges are sexualised, we are told; 'the very way in which we decide what is true and false is a function of sexual difference.'

    17. Romani On Irigaray
Summary of Irigaray s This Sex Which is Not One.
    http://www.english.upenn.edu/~jenglish/Courses/romani2.html
Gabriella Romani on Irigaray, "Sex Which is Not One"
In her article, "This sex which is not one", Luce Irigaray defies Freud's and Lacan's analyses of sexual relations and proposes a female sexuality which is self-referential and disconnected from "masculine parameters" of sexual conceptualization. She rejects Freud's and Lacan's theories of sexuality, because they are constructed "within the dominant phallic economy"(p.24). For Irigaray, Freud procedure becomes emblematic of a patriarchal order where female sexuality is concieved as a 'lack' and, therefore, a nonexistent entity. Irigaray's rejection of Freud and Lacan implies a rejection of any referentiality between the sexes. As she puts it, "man's desire and women's are strangers to each other" (p.27). Transposed on a political level, this would mean that the notion of equality is, for Irigary, impracticable, because man and woman are simply too different and uncomparable. Thus, "exploitation of women is based upon sexual difference and can only be resolved through sexual difference" (in 'Equal or Different?'). Irigaray's definition of female sexuality and sexual pleasure is centered exclusively on the female body, which is concieved not as one sexual organ, but as a plurality of them (p.28). The female body, she argues, cannot be reduces to one sexual organ, because this would only reaffirm the male logic of the "primacy of the phallus" (p.31). Important in this regard is Irigaray's concept of the 'other', meant as the capacity to create an alternative definition of the feminine (pp.28-29), which defies the one created by patriarchy. It is in the realm of this 'otherness', situated sexually in the female body, that the alternative has to be found. In Irigaray's conceptions, the appropriation of a real female space requires the exclusion of man. Thus, heterosexuality as well as motherhood are rejected as a "masochistic prostitution of the (female) body to a desire that is not her own" (p.25).
