Niccol Machiavelli (1469-1527) , Italian political thinker and historical figure best remembered for his masterpiece, The Prince (written in 1513, but published posthumously in 1532). Machiavelli is considered one of the great early analyzers of political power. Niccolo Machiavelli was born on May 3, 1469, in Florence, Italy. His father, Bernardo belonged to an impoverished branch of an influential old Florentine family. Bernardo was a lawyer and he had a small personal library that included books by Greek and Roman philosophers and volumes of Italian history. Bernardo died in 1500, Machiavelli's mother, Bartolomea de' Nelli, had died in 1496. As a thinker Machiavelli belonged to an entire school of Florentine intellectuals concerned with an examination of political and historical problems. His important writings were composed after 1512 when he was accused of conspiracy in 1513. The Medici family had returned to power and had ended the Florentine Republic. Lorenzo de' Medici fired Machiavelli who had held the office of Secretary under the previous government. He was suspected of plotting against the Medici, jailed, even tortured, and exiled. Machiavelli found himself unemployed after years of patriotic service, and spent most of his remaining years in producing his major works. He achieved some fame as a historian and playwright, but with

    Biography:
Niccolo Machiavelli (1469-1527) was an Italian political philosopher who is best known his book The Prince. Written in 1513 more as an attempt to gain favor with the ruling Medici family, it was a practical guide of how to establish political stability through the use of arbitrary power. What made this book different, however, is the fact that Machiavelli grounded his arguments solely in terms of finding the best methods for attaining the desired ends - thus, that the ends justified the means, no matter what they were. Abstract moral concerns were ignored completely in the effort to explain how an autocratic ruler might go about imposing his will. Thus the term machiavellian came into the English language as a label for any system where the ends justify the means and ethics play no role. The Philosophy of Politics and the Philosophy of Law are often studied separately, but they are presented here jointly because they both come back to the same thing: the study of force. Politics is the study of political force in the general community, while jurisprudence is the study of how laws can and should be used to achieve political and social goals.

He was a key figure of the Renaissance , best known for his treatise on realist political theory, The Prince Il principe ) (1513). His other major work, Discourses on the First Ten Books of Livy , deserves to be better known for its exposition of the political theory and practice of democratic states. Active in politics during a tumultuous era that saw popes leading armies, the wealthy city-states of Italy falling one after another into the hands of foreign powers, and governments rising and falling within a few weeks, Machiavelli analyzed the successes and failures he saw around him. The Prince described various means by which a prince could gain and retain control of his kingdom, evaluating each means in terms of how well it would strengthen the position of the prince while serving the public interest. Machiavelli’s focus on practical success at the expense of traditional moral values earned him the reputation of an amoralist. The term "Machiavellian," originally used by some of his contemporaries in discussions of "just" reasons of state, has come to describe one who deceives and manipulates others for gain, and judges the importance of actions by how well they achieve the desired result.

    Niccolo Machiavelli
Niccolo Machiavelli, the first great political philosopher of the Renaissance, was born in Florence, Italy at a time when the country was in political upheaval. Since 1434 Florence was ruled by the wealthy Medici family. Their rule was temporarily interrupted by a reform movement, begun in 1494, in which the young Machiavelli became an important diplomat. When the Medici family regained power in 1512 with the help of Spanish troops, Machiavelli was tortured and removed from public life. For the next 10 years, he devoted himself to writing history, political philosophy, and even plays. He ultimately gained favor with the Medici family and was called back to public duty for the last two years of his life. Machiavelli's greatest work, written in 1513 and published after his death in 1532, is The Prince , which stands apart from all other political writings of the period insofar as it focus on the practical problems a monarch faces in staying in power, rather than more speculative issues explaining the foundation of political authority. The work immediately provoked controversy and was soon condemned by Pope Clement VIII. Its main theme is that princes should retain absolute control of their territories, and they should use any means of expediency to accomplish this end.

Translation, translation, translation. I was quite hopeful to have a copy of "The Prince" on my kindle, but as is often the case, you get what you pay for. And this edition is free. Other reviewers have mentioned that the translation is not the best. And indeed, my hope was to insert highlights from my hard copy to the kindle edition and eventually toss away the crusty yellow text which I picked up in Japan. Instead, I found that the Daniel Donno text (Bantam) was clear and aphoristic; the Marriot (Kindle/online) text was muddled, and subsumed in a larger narrative. Example: Bantam: (Chapter V) "A city which is used to freedom is more easily controlled by means of its own citizens than by any other, provided one chooses not to destroy it."

Name at birth: Niccolo di Bernardo dei Machiavelli Machiavelli has been called the brilliant creator of modern political science by some, and a cynical beast by others; he is considered the originator of the idea of a political pragmatism that says "the end justifies the means." Either way, his 1513 book The Prince is a landmark work in the history of political power. A high-level statesman in Florence (1498-1512), he traveled on diplomatic missions throughout Europe before he was exiled by the Medicis. Imprisoned for a time, he later retired to his private estate and concentrated on studying and writing. A rumination on the acquisition and uses of power, The Prince remains a mainstay of college bookstores everywhere.

Discourses on Livy and The Prince was Machiavelli's uncoupling of political theory from ethics. Throughout the Western tradition, as in the Chinese tradition, political theory and policy was closely linked to ethics. Aristotle summed up this connection when he defined politics as merely an extension of ethics. Throughout the Western tradition, then, politics had been understood in terms of right and wrong, just and unjust, temperate and intemperate, and so on. The moral terms used to evaluate human actions were employed to evaluate political actions.
calculation ; the successful politician knows what to do or what to say for every situation.
The Prince simply describes the means by which individuals have tried to seize and to maintain power. Most of the examples he gives are failures; the entire book is suffused with tragedy for at any moment, if the ruler makes one miscalculation, all the authority he has so assiduously cultivated will dry up like the morning dew. The social and political world of the The Prince is monstrously unpredictable and volatile; only the most superhuman calculative mind can overcome this social and political volatility.
