From to One-Dimensional Man
Critical Reflections on Orwell and Marcuse
Section Two
By Douglas Kellner
Language and Politics: Some Case Studies In , "Newspeak" is the new totalitarian language which replaces "Old English." The aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought so that an individual could not even think critical or subversive thoughts. Potentially critical terms like "freedom" are formally defined into their conceptual opposites ("freedom is slavery"), or are simply eliminated from the dictionary and everyday language. In this manner, critical language would wither away as the number of words which allow differentiation and critique was increasingly reduced. "Doublethink" for Orwell was the mental activity of simultaneously knowing and not knowing, denoting an ability to be conscious of the truth while telling lies, so that one could hold two contradictory views at once and manipulate language to meet the exigencies of the moment ( , pp. 32f., passim). In these reflections on the politics of language, Orwell was generalizing from the practices of existing totalitarian states and projected a future in which truth and honesty no longer played any role in political discourse. In One-Dimensional Man , Marcuse uses the term "Orwellian language" to describe the nature and functions of dominant discourses within contemporary post-industrial societies, though most of his examples are from the US. In Marcuse's analysis, public and corporate officials, and the mass media, utilize a "one-dimensional language" to smooth over social contradictions and problems, and thus restrict thought and public discourse to the terms and interests of the established society.

54. Illuminations: Kellner
Douglas Kellner explores Marcuse s essay detailing the importance of ecology and the need to keep external nature from capitalist pollution and destruction.

Marcuse, Liberation, and Radical Ecology
By Douglas Kellner
Herbert Marcuse's late 1970s essay "Ecology and the Critique of Modern Society," written shortly before his death in 1979 and published here for the first time, articulates his vision of liberation and sense of the importance of ecology for the radical project. The essay argues that genuine ecology requires a transformation of human nature, as well as the preservation and protection of external nature from capitalist and state communist pollution and destruction. Rooting his vision of human liberation in the Frankfurt School notion of the embeddedness of human beings in nature, Marcuse believed that until aggression and violence within human beings was diminished, there would necessarily be continued destruction of nature, as well as violence against other human beings. Consequently, Marcuse stressed the importance of radical psychology and transforming inner nature, both to preserve external nature and to diminish violence in society. Marcuse's ecological vision is rooted in his reflections on the early Marx. The author of one of the first reviews of Marx's 1844

Home - Robert M. Young What's New Search Feedback ... Human Relations, Authority and Justice THE NAKED MARX Review of Herbert Marcuse, Eros and Civilization: A Philosophical Inquiry into Freud. London: Alan Lane: The Penguin Press, 1969 Reviewed by Robert M. Young Amazon US UK We now have essays on the social meaning of biology appearing from left, right and centre, and this seems a suitable occasion to comment on the genre and the issues which it raises. The latest entry is an important, honest book, and at first glance it seems a shame that it appears in Britain at a time when it will almost inevitably be absorbed in the current maelstrom of pseudo-biology. However, its publication is timely, since this is probably the best place for the middle-aged to begin to understand Marcuse . Most of us are reading him backwards: we met him in The Times 'Diary' where his essay on 'Repressive Tolerance' (1965) was cited as the manifesto of the Dutschke left. Then One-Dimensional Man (1964) appeared in paperback. Historians and political theorists had long known his Reason and Revolution (1941) and Soviet Marxism He begins with the conflict postulated by Freud in Civilisation and Its Discontents between human instincts and the necessary repression brought on by the socially-acquired conscience (or superego). Freud claimed that the history of man is the history of his repression and that 'Our civilisation is, generally speaking, founded on the suppression of instincts.' Sublimation of sex produces the energy for progress, and the price of progress is the substitution of guilt for happiness. Freud thought that this was due to an inevitable biological clash between Eros and civilisation. Marcuse argues that 'the irreconcilable conflict is not between work (reality principle) and Eros (pleasure principle), but between
