Abstract (englisch) In the last five decades there can be noticed an increasing interest of the scientific community regarding abductive inference, which Charles Sanders Peirce called the "first stage" of the process of reasoning and interpretation. Pretty diverse disciplines such as Philosophy of Science, Sociology, Linguistics, Literary Criticism, Semiotics, and AI-Research have pursued in using abductive inference to reformulate some of their specific problems of research. So, maybe there is - or will be - an "abductive turn" in thinking. However, what can be shown already is that research on Abduction provides the unique opportunity of approaching interdisciplinarity under a single aspect.

The Peirce papers. Collected Papers, ed. by Charles Hartshorne, Paul Weiss, and Arthur W. Burks, 8 vol. (1931-58), with a bibliography of Peirce's writings in vol. 8, pp. 249-330. The Peirce papers in the Houghton Library at Harvard University are listed and described by Richard S. Robin in his Annotated Catalogue of the Papers of Charles S. Peirce (1967), and in "The Peirce Papers: A Supplementary Catalogue," Transactions of the Charles S. Peirce Society, 7:35-57 (1971). Peirce's mathematical writings appear in Studies in the Scientific and Mathematical Philosophy of Charles S. Peirce, ed. by Carolyn Eisele and Richard M. Martin (1979).
Studies
Studies in the Philosophy of Charles Sanders Peirce (1952), was edited by Philip P. Wiener and Frederic H. Young. The Second Series, ed. by Edward C. Moore and Richard S. Robin (1964), contains a supplement to Burks's bibliography of Peirce's own writings (pp. 477-485) and also a bibliography of writings about Peirce (pp. 486-514). There are further supplements in Transactions 2:51-59 (1966). Carolyn Eisele and Victor F. Lenzen have published numerous studies of Peirce's work in the sciences, mathematics, and in the history of science (see the bibliographies mentioned above). Of the many books on Peirce's philosophy, the one that makes most use of unpublished materials and has greatest biographical value is Murray G. Murphy

Life.
Peirce was one of four sons of Sarah Mills and Benjamin Peirce , who was Perkins professor of astronomy and mathematics at Harvard University. After graduating from Harvard College in 1859 and spending one year with field parties of the U .S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, Peirce entered the Lawrence Scientific School of Harvard University, from which, in 1863, he graduated summa cum laude in chemistry. Meanwhile, he had reentered the Survey in 1861 as a computing aide to his father, who had undertaken the task of determining, from observations of lunar occultations of the Pleiades, the longitudes of American survey points with respect to European ones. Much of his early astronomical work for the Survey was done in the Harvard Observatory, in whose Annals (1878) there appeared his Photometric Researches (concerning a more precise determination of the shape of the Milky Way Galaxy).

Entry on Peirce in
Dictionary of American Biography
PEIRCE, CHARLES SANDERS (Sept. 10, 1839-Apr. 19, 1914), philosopher, logician, scientist, the founder of pragmatism, was born in Cambridge, Mass., the second son of Benjamin Peirce [ q.v. ] and Sarah Hunt (Mills) Peirce, daughter of Elijah Hunt Mills [ q.v. ]. He was a brother of James Mills Peirce [ q.v. ]. His father, the foremost American mathematician of his time, an inspiring and unconventional teacher, and a man of forceful character and wide interests, supervised the boy's education to such an extent that Charles could later say, "he educated me, and if I do anything it will be his work." However, Charles had learned to read and to write without the usual course of instruction. He had had independent recourse to encyclopedias and other works for information on out-of-the-way subjects. He showed an intense interest in puzzles, complicated and mathematical card tricks, chess problems, and code languages, some of which he invented for the amusement of his playmates. At eight he began to study chemistry of his own accord, and at twelve set up his own chemical laboratory, experimenting with Liebig's bottles of quantitative analysis. At thirteen he had read and more or less mastered Whately's Elements of Logic
His father wanted him to be a scientist. Peirce hesitated. Not only was he doubtful whether he should devote himself to a life with so few material benefits, but he was drawn to philosophy as well. At college he had already read Schiller's

Conceptual Structures
Home Page
Even though there are multiple semantic network representations available, the representation that has some of the most flexibility is Conceptual Structures CS . CS is a logic based representation of C.S. Peirce's existential graphs developed by John Sowa . In his 1984 book titled: " Conceptual Structures: Information Processing in Mind and Machine ", John gives a broad range of theoretical and applied studies in linguistics, logic, philosophy, and artificial intelligence. The two most important influences on this book were the philosophers Charles Sanders Peirce and Alfred North Whitehead, who were pioneers in symbolic logic. The book stimulated an interdisciplinary community of students and researchers to organize a series of informal workshops, which in 1993 were upgraded to the annual International Conferences on Conceptual Structures ( ICCS The founding community focused on the theory and applications of Conceptual Graphs CGs ), with a website which showed graphical diagrams that were built out of the logic building block of conceptual structures. However, later they were joined by another community devoted to Formal Concept Analysis FCA ), which is the title of a book written in 1996 by Bernhard Ganter and Rudolf Wille. The combined communities welcome anyone working in any area of cognitive science, especially on aspects of the analysis and representation of concepts and their expression in language and logic. They are also working together on collaborative testbeds, such as
