He was born in Athens c. 427 BC and was the youngest son of Ariston, of an old and wealthy family. It is claimed that his real name was Aristocles, with "Plato" (meaning "the broad") being a nickname given to him because of his wrestler's physique. He served in the last years of the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta, and after democracy was restored in Athens in 403 BC he hoped to enter politics. However, the realities of political life as well as the execution of his mentor Socrates in 399 BC drove him to abandon this goal. After the death of Socrates, Plato left Athens and traveled in Italy, Sicily and Egypt, where he learned the function of a water clock. In Italy he came in contact with the ideas of Pythagoras, which gave him a new appreciation of mathematics. After serving again in the military, he returned to Athens in 387 BC and founded his Academy, which he presided over until his death in 347 BC and which survived for nearly a thousand years after.

His mother was the niece of the wealthy nobleman, Critias and the sister of the rich and famous Charmides. Both Critias and Charmides were students of Socrates. YOUTH a. His Name . Plato's given name was Aristocles, meaning "the best" and "renowned." He acquired the name of Plato in his youth because of his wide shoulders. b. Outstanding Accomplishments . He excelled in every area of youthful achievement. He was outstanding in sports, in music and in academics. c. Military Hero . During the war with Sparta, Plato won the Athenian prize for bravery. d. Student of Socrates . In 407 B.C., at the age of twenty, Plato became a student of Socrates. DISILLUSIONMENT WITH DEMOCRACY In 404 B.C. Plato witnessed the death of his uncle, Critias, during the civil war between the aristocrats and the democrats. Again, in 399 B.C., he witnessed the condemnation and execution of his beloved Socrates by the democratic regime led by Anyutus. VOLUNTARY EXILE Plato left his native city immediately following the execution of Socrates. He visited Megara, Cyrene and Egypt. Plato for Kids - the ancient Greek philosopher Plato Plato is known today as one of the greatest philosophers of all time. He was born about 429 BC , close to the time when Pericles died, and he died in 347 BC, just after the birth of Alexander the Great . Plato was born in Athens, to a very wealthy and aristocratic family. Many of his relatives were involved with Athenian politics, though Plato himself was not. When Plato was a young man, he went to listen to Socrates , and learned a lot from Socrates about how to think, and what sort of questions to think about. When Socrates was killed in 399 BC , Plato was very upset (He was 30 years old when Socrates died) . Plato began to write down some of the conversations he had heard Socrates have. Practically everything we know about Socrates comes from what Plato wrote down. After a while, though, Plato began to write down his own ideas about philosophy instead of just writing down Socrates ' ideas. One of his earlier works is the Republic, which describes what Plato thought would be a better form of government than the government of Athens. Plato thought that most people were pretty stupid, and so they should not be voting about what to do. Instead, the best people should be chosen to be the Guardians of the rest. (Remember Plato was from a rich aristocratic family so he probably considered himself among the best people!). Plato also thought a lot about the natural world and how it works. He thought that everything had a sort of ideal form, like the idea of a chair, and then an actual chair was a sort of poor imitation of the ideal chair that exists only in your mind. One of the ways Plato tried to explain his ideas was with the famous metaphor of the cave. He said, Suppose there is a cave, and inside the cave there are some men chained up to a wall, so that they can only see the back wall of the cave and nothing else. These men can't see anything outside of the cave, or even see each other clearly, but they can see shadows of what is going on outside the cave. Wouldn't these prisoners come to think that the shadows were real, and that was what things really looked like?

The Laws was the last thing Plato wrote, at eighty, and it is a grim and terrifying culmination of the totalitarian tendencies in his earlier political thought. It is also pretty dull, since Plato had all but abandoned his earlier lively dialogue format. The Republic , however, is the supreme product of Plato's most mature years, thought, and style. It contains virtually the entire universe of Plato's philosophy. The word "republic" is from Latin: Res publica means "public matters" or "the state." In Greek, the title was the Politeia , which means the Constitution . But the Republic does not start out about politics. It is initially a familiar kind of Socratic dialogue about justice, just as the Euthyphro is about piety and the Meno is about virtue. The Republic is divided into ten Books.
