He is known by the Greek version of his original Phoenician name Malchus, ‘king’. He studied philosophy at Athens and was converted to Neoplatonism by Plotinus whom he met at Rome in 262. He was particularly hostile to Christianity. His work Against the Christians was burnt in the fifth century, and is now known only through quotations. He was the author of numerous philosophical works including a history of philosophy down to Plato, from which a life of Pythagoras survives. His most important work was the editing of the lectures of Plotinus under the title Enneads , and the composition of Plotinus' biography. His ‘Introduction’ Īsagōgē ) to the ‘Categories’ of Aristotle was later translated into Latin by Boethius and became very influential in the medieval schools.

The Literary Remains
R. Joseph Hoffman
Oxford University Press 1994
Fifteen volumes long, Against the Christians was written by the Roman pagan Porphyry circa 280 and was an educated man's studied attack on Christian theology. An exceedingly powerful and successful work, it and commentaries on it were condemned by the imperial church in 448 and burned. Only remnants which were contained in books that were primarily about other matters have survived until the present. As you will see, Porphyry used a literal interpretation of the Bible, a scathing wit, and an attack on Christian's intelligence, integrity, and morals (piety, loyalty to the state, and character) to undermine the new, up-start religion, Christianity. This book is divided into 2 parts: part one contains translations of Porphyry's writings while part two contains Hoffman's analysis of Porphyry's writings. 1) Referring to Mark 16:18, Porphyry writes: "In another passage Jesus says: "These signs shall witness to those who believe: they shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover. And if they drink any deadly drug, it will hurt them in no way." Well then: the proper thing to do would be to use this process as a test for those aspiring to be priests, bishops or church officers. A deadly drug should be put in front of them and [only] those who survive drinking it should be elevated in the ranks [of the church].

( DESCRIPTION: Porphyry is the term geologists apply to igneous rocks that consist of relatively large grains or crystals, called phenocrysts , surrounded by a finer grained material, usually called the groundmass . Porphyries may be of just about any composition known for igneous rocks, and the groundmasses may be phaneritic, aphanitic, or even glass.
Colors - phenocrysts, which may or many not contrast markedly with the overall color of their surrounding groundmasses, may be virtually colorless, white, black or just about any color.

Porphyry (Petrology)
From LoveToKnow 1911
PORPHYRY (Gr. iropcApeos, Lat. purpureus, purple ), in ' petrology , a beautiful red volcanic rock which was much used by the Romans for ornamental purposes when cut and polished. The famous red porphyry ( porfido rosso antico ) came from Egypt , but its beauty and decorative value were first recognized by the Romans in the time of the emperor Claudius . It was obtained on the west coast of the Red Sea , where it forms a dike 80 or 90 ft. thick. For a long time the knowledge of its source was lost, but the original locality, marked by many ancient quarries, has been re-discovered at Jebel Dhokan, and the stone is again an article of commerce, In a dark red ground-mass it contains many small white or rose -red plagioclase felspars, black shining prisms of hornblende , and small plates of iron oxide . The red colour of the felspars and of the ground-mass is unusual in rocks of this group, and arises from the partial conversion of the plagioclase felspar into thulite and manganese epidote . These minerals also occur in thin veins crossing the rock. Many specimens show effects of crushing and in extreme cases this has produced brecciation. Another famous porphyry, hardly less beautiful, is the

This image, for instance, shows an andesite porphyry. The fine-grained part is andesite and the phenocrysts are light alkali feldspar and dark biotite . Geologists also may call this an andesite with porphyritic texture. That is, "porphyry" refers to a texture, not a composition, just as "satin" refers to a type of fabric rather than the fiber it's made from (see the various igneous rock textures ). See other examples of porphyritic texture in the volcanic rocks gallery . A porphyry may be plutonic, intrusive or extrusive.

Definition Porphyry deposits are large, low- to medium-grade deposits in which primary (hypogene) ore minerals are dominantly structurally controlled and which are spatially and genetically related to felsic to intermediate porphyritic intrusions (Kirkham, 1972). The large size and structural control (e.g. veins, vein sets, stockworks, fractures, 'crackled zones', and breccias) serve to distinguish porphyry deposits from a variety of deposits that may be peripherally associated, including skarns, high-temperature mantos, peripheral mesothermal veins, and epithermal precious-metal deposits. Secondary minerals may be developed in supergeneenriched zones in porphyry Cu deposits by weathering of primary sulphides. Such zones typically have significantly higher Cu grades, thereby enhancing the potential for economic exploitation.

PREFACE THE present translation of the Life of Saint Porphyry is based on the Greek text published in the Teubner series by the members of the Bonn Philological Society in 1895. My thanks are due to Messrs. Teubner for their courtesy in allowing me to make use of this text, the pages of which are indicated by figures preceded by the letter T T weight of gold of the various sums of money mentioned in the text; to attempt to estimate their purchasing power would be futile. For the translation, at the risk of recalling the atmosphere of Wardour Street, a more or less Biblical English has been employed. Such a style seemed naturally to impose itself, in spite of certain inevitable incongruities. The references to the Bible under the text are given first to the English Authorized Version, and then, in brackets, to the Septuagint, where the latter requires a different citation. In the rendering of such quotations I have not followed any English version consistently, so that probably no reader is likely to be satisfied.

Porphyry was a man of great learning and was interested in and had great talent for historical and philological criticism. He had a passion to uproot false teachings in order to ennoble people and turn them to the Good. He declared the salvation of the soul as the ultimate purpose of philosophy. Porphyry's father was called Malkhos or Malchus, which means 'king'. Both Porphyry's parents were Phoenician and he would only get the nickname Porphyry later in his life as we shall explain below. Porphyry was named after his father so for many years he was known as Malchus. According to Gillian Clark's book Porphyry. On Abstinence from Killing Animals

    TAPE 2: BOETHIUS ON PORPHYRY
R.J. Kilcullen Before listening to this tape you should read V.E. Watt's introduction to his Penguin translation of The Consolation of Philosophy . In this lecture I will talk about Boethius' other writings, and then I will comment on an extract from his commentary on Porphyry. To follow this lecture you will need either the Readings book, or Richard McKeon (ed.), Selections from Medieval Philosophers (New York: Charles Scribner's Sons). From the introduction by Watts you will have gathered that Boethius was both a philosopher and a politician. This combination of roles was recommended by Plato and exemplified (imperfectly) in Roman history by Cicero. Cicero also preceded Boethius as a translator of Greek philosophy into Latin. E.K. Rand in his chapter on Boethius in his Founders of the Middle Ages quotes from Boethius' preface to his commentary on Aristotle's Categories , written in the year Boethius was consul. He says: Although the cares of my consular office prevent me from devoting my entire attention to these studies, yet it seems to me a sort of public service to instruct my fellow citizens in the products of reasoned investigation... I am glad to assume the... task of educating our present society in the spirit of Greek philosophy... this is truly a part of my consular duty...

    Neoplatonism
Neoplatonism is a modern term used to designate the period of Platonic philosophy beginning with the work of Plotinus Gnosticism and the Hermetic tradition. A major factor in this syncretism, and one which had an immense influence on the development of Platonic thought, was the introduction of the Jewish Scriptures into Greek intellectual circles via the translation known as the Septuagint Timaeus Enneads

Porphyry PD Courtesy of Wikipedia zSB(3,3) Definition: Porphyry (234-c.305) was a neoplatonist philosopher, raised in the Phoenician city of Tyre (modern Lebanon), for which reason he is called "the Tyrian". Porphyry (born Malchus) studied at Athens, under Longinus, among others, and starting in 263, he studied at Rome with Plotinus, whose biography he wrote and whose Enneads Porphyry published. After Plotinus died, Porphyry became the head of the Neo-Platonic school. He wrote books on many different topics, including a criticism of Christianity that was burned in 448 by imperial edict, commentaries and introductions to Aristotle, commentaries on Plato, Ptolemy, and the Enneads, historical work, including a biography of Pythagoras, metaphysics, religion, philosophy,. Porphyry criticized fraud in the polytheism of his day. He wrote about the caves in which practitioners of Mithraism practiced noting that they were designed like small versions of the universe (microcosms). Although limited work written by Porphyry survive, we know him through other writers, especially Eunapius. Sources:
