Feedback Natural Features Porphyry Island is the last island in a chain stretching southwest from the Black Bay Peninsula. It is generally flat to rolling with little relief and the rugged shoreline offers little shelter. The rocks of the peninsula and the island are of Late Precambrian age and consist of more than 300 distinctive lava flows. These ancient volcanic flows are typically grey-green basalt intermixed with minor amounts of sedimentary rocks. Geologists call these rocks the Osler Group. The island and nature reserve take their name from the characteristic quartz and feldspar crystals, or porphyries found in the volcanic rocks. The nature reserve is on the southern margin of the boreal forest. Its interior supports a mixed forest dominated by white birch in the south and balsam fir in the north. Wetlands with concentrations of black spruce are also found here. Lichens are commonly seen draping mature trees and as barrens intermixed with hardy flowering plants along rocky shorelines. The rocky shores also support arctic species, like encrusted saxifrage, insectivorous butterwort and the sedge. Of greater interest is the presence of devil's club in the forest. Populations of this thorny shrub here, and on adjacent islands, are the only known occurrences east of the Rocky Mountains.

Porphyry has a rough surface and, thanks to the difference in hardness of the minerals it contains, porphyry pavers do not become smooth due to wear or slippery when it is wet. It is excellent for commercial and residential use. Porphyry is an excellent choice of materials for facing outdoor surfaces as it is unaffected by freezing and thawing and because of its high resistance to chemicals. It is particularly recommended for public areas, including plazas, sidewalks, pool decks, fountains and parks. Porphyry has extremely low maintenance costs, as proved by the excellent conditions of many roads and squares paved hundreds of years ago.
The increase in the concern for safety and durability has led to the adoption of protective surfaces which resist and prevent slipping, are

THE SCHOOLS
In twelfth-century Europe schools flourished in many centres. There were schools in monasteries and cathedrals, primarily for the education of monks and priests but often open also to laymen. In Italian towns, especially, there were lay schools teaching law and commercial skills to fee-paying students. In France, especially, also in England and other countries, there were schools for fee-paying students of the liberal arts. The traditional list of the liberal arts included seven: grammar, logic and rhetoric (the "trivium"), and arithmetic, geometry, astronomy and music (the "quadrivium"): most of the schools we're talking about taught the trivium, grammar, logic and rhetoric. These three disciplines in one way or other taught language skills; they were sometimes called the artes sermocinales . Students who had completed these "trivial" studies sometimes moved on to theology, or sometimes set up as teachers themselves of grammar, logic and rhetoric. Some students travelled from country to country looking for a good school, and sometimes made their living for a while by teaching before becoming students again.

Porphyry
Introduction
Porphyry is a type of volcanic rock belonging to the Atesina porphyry platform, an enormous complex of volcanic rocks in Italy's Trentino Alto Adige region. These rocks, which differ greatly in their chemical composition and formation, are the result of intense volcanic activity which developed with linear eruptions through numerous fractures. This began 260 million years ago in the Lower Permian and carried on for several million more years, alternating between phases of eruptions and inactivity. Porphyry comes from ignimbrites , which is a deposit in these rocks from the volcanic activity. Ignimbrites are flows of gaseous-liquid mixtures between 5 and 20 metres thick with a rather constant chemical composition and which constituted the ignimbritic unit which is hundreds of metres thick. At present porphyry is worked only in one of these units (classified as rhyolitic ignimbrite) characterised by very neat vertical fissuring and percussion fracturing which are necessary for working porphyry; because of the lack of stratification, it is possible to work a thickness of about 100-200 metres. The chemical composition of porphyry (over 70% silica, about 14% alumina, 8% alkali and small percentages of iron, calcium and magnesium), its minerals composition (quartz, sanidine and plagioclase crystals with smaller amounts of biotite and of pyroxenes in a vitreous paste) and its distinctive structure, as well as stratification, determine porphyry's technical characteristics (high compression breaking point, high resistance to chemical agents, high sliding and rolling friction) which make it one of the most important materials for paving and facing in Europe.

Neoplatonism
Neoplatonism is a modern term used to designate the period of Platonic philosophy beginning with the work of Plotinus Gnosticism and the Hermetic tradition. A major factor in this syncretism, and one which had an immense influence on the development of Platonic thought, was the introduction of the Jewish Scriptures into Greek intellectual circles via the translation known as the Septuagint Timaeus Enneads

Plotinus , is responsible for the grand synthesis of progressive Christian and Gnostic ideas with the traditional Platonic philosophy. He answered the challenge of accounting for the emergence of a seemingly inferior and flawed cosmos from the perfect mind of the divinity by declaring outright that all objective existence is but the external self-expression of an inherently contemplative deity known as the One ( to hen ), or the Good (

    Porphyry
Volume No.: The scientific name Porphyry, in the modern scientific classification of rocks, it is used only as a commercial term to indicate a volcanic rock with peculiar characteristics and susceptible to particular uses. The classic porphyry and trentine is the volcanic rock coming from the Italian region of Trentino- Alto Adige. The name porphyry, which derives its typical colour similar to purple, was initially used to indicate a rock extracted in Egypt, known in ancient times as Imperial Red Porphyry or Ancient Red Porphyry and was extracted in the Egyptian desert in the mountain Jebel Dhokan (Kempe et al., 1983), which in ancient times was used for the elaboration of columns and vases, sarcophagus, busts, etc. The Romans, who called it “lapis porphyrites” or Roman stone, exploited intensely the quarries, using thousands of workers: the large number of works extended all over the Empire. This stone has always had a great symbolic value, apart from aesthetic: the emperors, personifying divinity, lived surrounded by porphyry, they were born in rooms cladded with porphyry and many Roman emperors were even buried in sarcophagus made of porphyry.

Kikkaseki , "stone/rock of chrysanthemum flower" (height - 36 cm), a metamorphic rock that contains clusters of carbonate crystals (dolomite, calcite or aragonite) arranged in a radial manner from Gifu Prefecture, central Japan. ( DESCRIPTION: Porphyry is the term geologists apply to igneous rocks that consist of relatively large grains or crystals, called phenocrysts, surrounded by a finer grained material, usually called the groundmass. Porphyries may be of just about any composition known for igneous rocks. Colors of the phenocrysts, which may or many not contrast markedly with the overall color of their surrounding groundmasses, may be virtually colorless, white, black or just about any color. Effective hardnesses of most porphyries range from from 6 to 7. Specific gravities range from 2.5 to nearly 4. OTHER NAMES: Names for porphyries given by geologists in the field usually include three elements: 1. a geographical name indicating where the rock occurs; 2. its igneous rock name on the basis of its overall compostion; and 3.the word porphyry
