By 1017 this fifth-century text had likely made its way to Dar al-Hikma. It would have been slotted in the cabinet beside its more popular (and pseudonymous) abridgment, (Aristotle's) Discourse on the Pure Good , later known as the Book of Causes The Elements of Theology Elements may be the most orderly proof of immortality ever composed by a Hellenic philosopher. In this essay I will present a few Elements which abstract Proclus' argument. This presentation will pass quickly to a critique. The critique brings Proclus' image of the soul into focus, as it disentangles the knot of his immortality argument. We take up the seamed volume. Leather opens to paper, paper opens to words. The text of Proclus' Elements consists of two hundred and eleven Neoplatonic propositions, organized by a method similar to that which mathematicians use in the construction of mathematical proofs. When a mathematician wants to prove a novel theorem, he uses in his proof theorems which have been proved before. Those axioms are foundational, in the sense that they are uncontroversial and accepted as authoritative by the mathematical community.

Harrington, must have asked this central question many times as he cleaned the milkman's septic tank to pay the milk bill during the Great Depression. Need it be said that this dirty digging was not his vocation? He was a welder, and what we might call today, a materials expert. He was also a missionary, a scout master, and finally, a Mormon bishop. To my knowledge, neither he, nor any of his family before him had any formal college education. Yet, he had a sort of ingenious independence and an upward looking nobility which still inspires me. Perhaps this was because of his ancestry. His grandparents were among those intrepid pioneers who crossed the plains and settled Utah's Salt Lake Valley. My parents separated when I was seven years old. Early Geometry Proclus Diadochus, AD 410-485. (From his book: Commentary on Euclid's Elements I It was Thales, who, after a visit to Egypt, first brought this study to Greece. Not only did he make numerous discoveries himself, but laid the foundation for many other discoveries on the part of his successors, attacking some problems with greater generality and others more empirically. After him Mamercus the brother of the poet Stesichorus, is said to have embraced the study of geometry, and in fact Hippias of Elis writes that he achieved fame in that study. After these Pythagoras changed the study of geometry, giving it the form of a liberal discipline, seeking its first principles in ultimate ideas, and investigating its theorems abstractly and in a purely intellectual way. [He then mentions several who developed this abstract approach further: Anaxagoras, Hippocrates, Theodorus, etc.] Plato, who lived after Hippocrates and Theodorus, stimulated to a very high degree the study of mathematics and of geometry in particular because of his zealous interest in these subjects.
