Pythagoras of Samos is often described as the first pure mathematician. He is an extremely important figure in the development of mathematics yet we know relatively little about his mathematical achievements. Unlike many later Greek mathematicians, where at least we have some of the books which they wrote, we have nothing of Pythagoras's writings. The society which he led, half religious and half scientific, followed a code of secrecy which certainly means that today Pythagoras is a mysterious figure. We do have details of Pythagoras's life from early biographies which use important original sources yet are written by authors who attribute divine powers to him, and whose aim was to present him as a god-like figure. What we present below is an attempt to collect together the most reliable sources to reconstruct an account of Pythagoras's life. There is fairly good agreement on the main events of his life but most of the dates are disputed with different scholars giving dates which differ by 20 years. Some historians treat all this information as merely legends but, even if the reader treats it in this way, being such an early record it is of historical importance. Pythagoras's father was Mnesarchus ([ ] and [ ]), while his mother was Pythais [

Pythais was a native of Samos. Mnesarchus was a merchant from Tyre. An apocryphal story says that he brought grain to Samos during a famine and was granted citizenship of Samos out of gratitude. Pythagoras probably had at least two brothers, perhaps three. Little is known about his childhood. He apparently grew up on Samos, but traveled with his father. It has been said he and his father returned to Tyre on at least one occasion and also traveled to Italy. He was well educated, learning to read and play the lyre. It is said that while in Tyre, he studied with the Chaldaeans and the learned men of Syria. At home, he was influenced by his teacher, the philosopher, Pherekydes. Another apocryphal tale has him visiting Miletus in his late teenage years to study with Thales. By this time, Thales was a very old man, who probably did not teach Pythagoras a lot, but may have greatly influenced him. Thales's student, Anaximander was giving lectures on Miletus and quite possibly, Pythagoras attended these lectures. Anaximander had great interest in geometry and cosmology, subjects which would strongly influence Pythagoras's own views.

First published Wed Feb 23, 2005; substantive revision Fri Nov 13, 2009 Pythagoras, one of the most famous and controversial ancient Greek philosophers, lived from ca. 570 to ca. 490 BCE. He spent his early years on the island of Samos, off the coast of modern Turkey. At the age of forty, however, he emigrated to the city of Croton in southern Italy and most of his philosophical activity occurred there. Pythagoras wrote nothing, nor were there any detailed accounts of his thought written by contemporaries. By the first centuries BCE, moreover, it became fashionable to present Pythagoras in a largely unhistorical fashion as a semi-divine figure, who originated all that was true in the Greek philosophical tradition, including many of Plato's and Aristotle's mature ideas. A number of treatises were forged in the name of Pythagoras and other Pythagoreans in order to support this view. It remains controversial whether he also engaged in the rational cosmology that is typical of the Presocratic philosopher/scientists and whether he was in any sense a mathematician. The early evidence suggests, however, that Pythagoras presented a cosmos that was structured according to moral principles and significant numerical relationships and may have been akin to conceptions of the cosmos found in Platonic myths, such as those at the end of the

    Pythagoras of Samos
    an outline biography
The famous Greek philosopher mathematician Pythagoras was born circa 570 B.C. on Samos an island lying off the western coast of Asia Minor. Samos was at this time one of the colonies that had been developed by the city states of ancient Greece centred upon Asia Minor and the islands lying off its coasts. Such colonisation had been encouraged moreso by population pressures and political turmoils in ancient Greece rather than by the prospect of trading opportunities.
At this remove it is difficult to be precise about Pythagoras and his background, 570 B.C. is rather a long time ago and records were not really maintained even about prominent or controversial figures.
It is suggested that his mother came from amongst the colonial Greeks of Samos but that his father was a Phoenician craftsperson from Tyre who worked with precious metals and who had been granted citizenship rights after bringing corn to Samos at a time of famine.
Pythagoras seems to have had an impressive birthmark on his thigh that, amongst his fellows, was held to be a mark of divine favour - he was considered to have had a "Golden Thigh."

Pythagoras of Samos ~580 B.C. to ~500 B.C. Final Paper Math G Dr. Ian Walton Compiled By: Nazih Malak Date: 02-May-01 Pythagoras I first heard of Pythagoras back in middle school around 12 years ago in my school back home in Lebanon and his name went anonymous until last semester.Pythagorass name re-appeared when I took a Geometry class math B here at Mission College. So who is this man? Pythagoras is considered to be the first real mathematician. As an extremely important Greek philosopher and mathematician and founder of the Pythagorean School, but very few information is known about him and his life. The Pythagorean view of the world consisted of a belief that numbers were the keys to the various qualities of mankind and matter. In the Pythagorean view, everything was composed of numbers, the explanation for any objects existence could only be found in numbers. This was a completely novel concept, because at that time, numbers existed for practical purposes only, as a device for solving problems in calendar construction, building and commerce. Pythagoreans were the first who saw a number as an idea, important in itself. They also made a distinction between logistic (art of computation) and arithmetic (number theory).

    Georg Simon Ohm
    By: Amy Dixon
Georg Simon Ohm was born to Johann Wolfgang Ohm and Maria Elizabeth Beck in 1787 in Erlangen. His father, Johann Wolfgang, was a self-taught man in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and philosophy brought this knowledge to his children. Georg Simon learned more science from his father than he did at Erlangen Gymnasium. Ohm entered the University of Erlangen but lost funding for it by his father after three semesters because Georg was too interested in student life. He then became a mathematics teacher in a school in Gottstadt bei Nydau. Ohm wished to go with Karl Christian von Lagsdrof to the University of Heidlelberg to continue his mathematics education, but Lagsdrof suggested that Ohm teach himself. Ohm studied Euler, Laplace, Lacroix, Lagrange, Legendre, Laplace, Biot, and Poisson and taught himself much mathematics. He eventually received a doctorate from Erlangen and started working towards his lifetime goal of gaining a high position in a university. Ohm taught math and physics at a poor school in Bamberg where he wrote an elementary book on teaching geometry. In 1817, He became a physics and math teacher at the Jesuit Gymnasium of Cologne where he had access to a laboratory and began experiments after the discovery of electromagnetism by Oersted. Ohm began to seriously experiment and publish after he realized it would be what it would take to reach his life goal. His first paper was written in 1825, which describes the decrease in electromagnetic force produced by an increased wire length. He also wrote two papers that expanded Fouriers study of heat conduction that gave a mathematical description of conduction in circuits.

    Who Was Pythagoras?:
Pythagoras, born on the Aegean island of Samos in the 6th century B.C. and active in southern Italy, was an ancient Greek philosopher and mathematician best known for a theorem in geometry that was named for him. Pythagoras is credited with founding a philosophical school that deviated from the male-dominated Greek norms by allowing women to participate equally. The teachings of the school aren't strictly what we think of as philosophical. They also include rules on living and what to eat. Supposedly, the Pythagoreans explained the common human physiological response to beans as a spirit trying to exit the body. Therefore bean-consumption was taboo. Pythagoras is also associated with the theory of metempsychosis in which the soul of the dead is reborn into another body.
    Pythagoras and the Pythagorean Theorem:
Pythagoras is most familiar to students of geometry for a theorem that bears his name. The
