    Bertrand Russell
    Bertrand Arthur William Russell Dates:
Born: May 18, 1872 in Ravenscroft, Wales
Died: February 2, 1970 in Penrhyndeudraeth, Wales
Appointment at City College New York revoked: 1940
    Nobel Prize for Literature: 1950
    Biography:
Bertrand Russell was a British mathematician and philosopher who, along with A.N. Whitehead, wrote Principia Mathematica in 1903. This work was an important landmark in the development of logic and the philosophy of mathematics in the 20th century. In it, Russell and Whitehead demonstrated that mathematics can be expressed via a few terms of general logic and that numbers can be defined as classes. In the process, they also developed concepts which allowed symbolic logic to become an important specialization in philosophy. These concepts raised the hopes among many philosophers that they might eventually be able to achieve the sort of certitude in their field which was traditionally the province of the natural sciences. Other important contributions to philosophy include his influence on the development of Logical Positivism. One of his early students was Ludwig Wittgenstein, who was impressed by Russell's concept of logical atomism. Russell was also an important leader in the effort to revive empiricism in the field of epistemology.

    I ntroduction:
Bertrand Russell, the third Earl Russell, is the twentieth century's most important liberal thinker, one of two or three of its major philosophers, and a prophet for millions of the creative and rational life. He was born in 1872, at the height of Britain's economic and political ascendancy, and died in 1970 when Britain's empire had all but vanished and her power had been drained in two victorious but debilitating world wars. At his death, however, his voice still carried moral authority, for he was one of the world's most influential critics of nuclear weapons and the American war in Vietnam. Although born into one of Britain's most distinguished aristocratic Whig families, he became a persistent advocate of social democracy and other progressive causes, such as women's rights, peace among nations and a scientific approach to eradicate personal and public irrationality. His grandfather as Lord John Russell had been the architect of the Great Reform Bill of 1832, which extended the franchise peacefully to many in the middle classes. Orphaned before he was four years old, Bertrand Russell was brought up by his grandmother who tried to train him to become Prime Minister in the tradition of his grandfather. Russell had little idea of his abilities until he went up to Trinity College, Cambridge in 1890, for he was educated in virtual isolation while bearing painful if hidden psychic scars from his early bereavement. There his talents in philosophy and mathematics blossomed and until 1914 he devoted most of his time to these pursuits, becoming a world authority, a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1908 and publishing, with Alfred Whitehead

    In Praise of Idleness
    By Bertrand Russell
Before advancing my own arguments for laziness, I must dispose of one which I cannot accept. Whenever a person who already has enough to live on proposes to engage in some everyday kind of job, such as school-teaching or typing, he or she is told that such conduct takes the bread out of other people's mouths, and is therefore wicked. If this argument were valid, it would only be necessary for us all to be idle in order that we should all have our mouths full of bread. What people who say such things forget is that what a man earns he usually spends, and in spending he gives employment. As long as a man spends his income, he puts just as much bread into people's mouths in spending as he takes out of other people's mouths in... Read Full Essay Already a Member?

    In Praise of Idleness
    By Bertrand Russell
One of the commonest things to do with savings is to lend them to some Government. In view of the fact that the bulk of the public expenditure of most civilized Governments consists in payment for past wars or preparation for future wars, the man who lends his money to a Government is in the same position as the bad men in Shakespeare who hire murderers. The net result of the man's economical habits is to increase the armed forces of the State to which he lends his savings. Obviously it would be better if he spent the money, even if he spent it in drink or gambling. All this is only preliminary. I want to say, in all seriousness, that a great deal of harm is being done in the modern world by belief in the virtuousness of work, and that the road to happiness and prosperity lies in an organized diminution of work. First of all: what is work? Work is of two kinds: first, altering the position of matter at or near the earth's surface relatively to other such matter; second, telling other people to do so. The first kind is unpleasant and ill paid; the second is pleasant and highly paid. The second kind is capable of indefinite extension: there are not only those who give orders, but those who give advice as to what orders should be given. Usually two opposite kinds of advice are given simultaneously by two organized bodies of men; this is called politics. The skill required for this kind of work is not knowledge of the subjects as to which advice is given, but knowledge of the art of persuasive speaking and writing, i.e. of advertising.

    Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russell was born in Trelleck, Gwent, as the second son of Viscount Amberley. His mother, Katherine, was the daughter of Baron Stanley of Aderley. She died of diphtheria in 1874 and her husband passed on twenty months later, so that, at the age of three, Russell was an orphan. He was brought up by his grandfather, Lord John Russell, who had been prime minister twice, and Lady John. Inspired by Euclid's Geometry , Russell displayed a keen aptitude for pure mathematics and developed an interest in philosophy. At Trinity College, Cambridge, his brilliance was soon recognized, and brought him a membership in the 'Apostles,’ a forerunner of the Bloomsbury Set. After graduating from Cambridge in 1894, Russell worked briefly at the British Embassy in Paris as honorary attaché. In the next year he became a fellow of Trinity College. Against his family's wishes, Russell married an American Quaker, Alys Persall Smith, and went with his wife to Berlin, where he studied economics and gathered data for the first of his ninety-odd books, German Social Democracy (1896). Russell's fellowship dissertation

    PREFACE
I N the following pages I have confined myself in the main to those problems of philosophy in regard to which I thought it possible to say something positive and constructive, since merely negative criticism seemed out of place. For this reason, theory of knowledge occupies a larger space than metaphysics in the present volume, and some topics much discussed by philosophers are treated very briefly, if at all.
I have derived valuable assistance from unpublished writings of G. E. Moore and J. M. Keynes: from the former, as regards the relations of sense-data to physical objects, and from the latter as regards probability and induction. I have also profited greatly by the criticisms and suggestions of Professor Gilbert Murray.
    NOTE TO SEVENTEENTH IMPRESSION
W ITH reference to certain statements on pages 44, 75, 131, and 132, it should be remarked that this book was written in the early part of 1912 when China was still an Empire, and the name of the then late Prime Minister did begin with the letter B.

    Bertrand Russell on Nuclear Testing
Bertrand Russell was a British mathematician, logician and Nobel prize winner. Many regard him as the greatest philosopher of the century. Here is an article that Russell wrote 35 years ago yet it could have been written this morning, with its references to India, Pakistan, and various nations' disregard for the sanctity of human life.
    The Doctrine of Extermination
    by Bertrand Russell
An impartial examination of the conditions of international conduct today allows no other conclusion but that the standards of behavior which were held by nazism and fascism have become general and accepted. The world was expected to react with horror to the doctrine of extermination. War, so it was contended, had certain rules. Amog these were the avoidance of torture, the concentration on military objectives, the respect of prisoners and their "rights." It was also believed that entire civilian populations were not to be slaughtered in a manner reminiscent of Genghiz Khan. War, therefore, was thought to have a conceivable political end and, although all such conflict amounted to atrocity, the scale was never extended to include entire masses of defenseless people. The bombings of Tokyo and of Hamburg
