(November 2009) Max Scheler (1874-1928) Max Scheler (1874–1928) was both the most respected and neglected of the major early 20th century German Continental philosophers in the phenomenological tradition. His observations and insights concerning "a special form of human hate" and related social and psychological phenomenon furnished a descriptive basis for his philosophical concept of "Ressentiment" As a widely recognized convention, the French spelling of this term has been retained in philosophical circles so as to preserve a broad sense of discursive meaning and application. Scheler died unexpectedly of a heart attack in 1928 leaving a vast body of unfinished works. Extrapolations from his thoughts have always since piqued interest and discussion on a variety of topics. His works were on the Nazi book burn list.

(b . Aug. 22, 1874, Munich, Ger.d. May 19, 1928, Frankfurt am Main), German social and ethical philosopher, remembered for his phenomenological approach, after the philosophical method of the founder of phenomenology, Edmund Husserl. In 1901 Scheler became a lecturer at the University of Jena; by that time he had already been influenced by Husserl. Scheler later met several of Husserl's disciples during his years (1907-10) as a professor at Munich. Retiring to Berlin in 1910, he wrote his major works before 1917, when he joined the German Foreign Office as a diplomat in Geneva and at The Hague. In 1919 he became professor of philosophy and sociology at Cologne. By 1920 he had become a pacifist and a convert to Roman Catholicism, but about 1924 he turned toward a more pantheistic view of man and the world. As a phenomenologist, Scheler sought to discover the essence of mental attitudes and their relation to their objects. He differed from Husserl in his readiness to assign an independently real status to the objects. Scheler's work falls into two periods. During the first, his work contained a number of Christian orientations, as in the main work of this period, Der Formalismus in der Ethik und die materiale Wertethik Formalism in Ethics and Non-Formal Ethics of Values ), which is in part a severe critique of Kant. Scheler shows that what one "ought to do" presupposes a feeling of the

Scheler was concerned with the permanent values in human personality and human action; this concern brought him to important work in phenomenology , which spread beyond Germany, chiefly through his influence. In his early thought, for which he is best known, Scheler taught that love is the great principle of human association, and he regarded God as the source of all love. His most basic work is Formalism in Ethics and Non-Formal Ethics of Values On the Eternal in Man (1921; tr. 1960) and Man's Place in Nature (1928; tr. 1961). SCHELER, Max Man's Place in Nature Beacon Press, New York 1961 (t.o.: Die Stellung des Menschen im Kosmos , Bern 1928). CONTENT OF THE WORK The purpose of this work is to elaborate a notion of man conceived independently of the methods of scientific enquiry. The author believes that the proliferation of special sciences concerning man, far from illuminating the subject, makes it even more difficult to obtain a clear conception of what is actually being studied. In spite of the ever-greater resources for knowledge and clarity man remains a problem for himself. Can we do away with the conception of the human world as a corner of the natural world? Can man be seen, not as a species-being within the world of species-beings, but rather as a new departure, not to be classified? More fundamentally, has man unique characteristics not applicable to any other species? The author seeks to answer these key questions with a positive affirmation. The work begins with an exploration of psycho-physical life. The author deals with the simple life impulse of the vegetable world and then passes to the more highly differentiated impulse which characterises the instinctive animal level. Instinct has the quality of marking out its possessor as an individual which acts independently of determination from external factors. His analysis of practical intelligence and associative memory leads him to state that animals are 'intelligent', that is, that they can approach their environment abstractly, as when they use means to reach an end.
