The second is his anti-Cartesian account of subjectivity, which prefigures some of the best ideas of thinkers like Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Jacques Lacan, in showing how the thinking subject cannot be fully transparent to itself. The third is his later critique of Hegelian Idealism, which influenced Kierkegaard, Marx, Nietzsche, Heidegger, and others, and aspects of which are still echoed in contemporary thought by thinkers like Jacques Derrida.

Carvalho Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling (27 January 1775 – 20 August 1854), later von Schelling , was a German philosopher . Standard histories of philosophy make him the midpoint in the development of German Idealism , situating him between Fichte , his mentor prior to 1800, and Hegel , his former university roommate and erstwhile friend. Interpreting Schelling's philosophy is often difficult because of its ever-changing nature. Some scholars characterize him as a protean thinker who, although brilliant, jumped from one subject to another and lacked the synthesizing power needed to arrive at a complete philosophical system. Others challenge the notion that Schelling's thought is marked by profound breaks, instead arguing that his philosophy always focused on a few common themes, especially human freedom, the absolute, and the relationship between spirit and nature. Schelling's general thought has often been neglected, especially in the English-speaking world, as has been his later work on mythology and revelation (much of which remains untranslated). This stems not only from the ascendancy of Hegel, whose mature works portray Schelling as a mere footnote in the development of Idealism, but also from his

Kant himself sought to bridge the realms of necessity and spontaneity in the Critique of Judgement (1790), by suggesting that nature itself could be seen in more than formal terms: it also produces self-determining organisms and can give rise to disinterested aesthetic pleasure in the subject that contemplates its forms. The essential problems remained, however, that 1) Kant gave no account of the genesis of the subject that transcends its status as a piece of determined nature, and 2) such an account would have to be able to bridge the divide between nature and freedom. Executive summary: Naturphilosophie Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel Memorabilien De Marcione Paullinarum epislolarum emendatore . Meanwhile a much more important influence had begun to operate on him arising out of his study of Immanuel Kant and Johann Gottlieb Fichte . The Review of Aenesidemus and the tractate On the Notion of Wissenschaftslehre found in his mind most fruitful soil. With characteristic zeal and impetuosity Schelling had no sooner grasped the leading ideas of Fichte's amended form of the critical philosophy than he put together his impressions of it in his (1794). There was nothing original in the treatment, but it showed such power of appreciating the new ideas of the Fichtean method that it was hailed with cordial recognition by Fichte himself, and gave the author immediately a place in popular estimation as in the foremost rank of existing philosophical writers. The more elaborate work, (1795), which, still remaining within the limits of the Fichtean idealism, however, exhibits unmistakable traces of a tendency to give the Fichtean method a more objective application, and to amalgamate with it

Although less known than other German Idealists, like Hegel, Schelling’s probing of the very limits of transcendentental idealism would be of great importance to Romanticism, theology, and contemporary philosophy. Schelling was born in Leonberg, in Wurttenburg (Germany), in 1775. He was the son of a Lutheran minister. As preparation for a life devoted to the church, his family sent him to the theological seminary at Tübingen. As a student, his friendship with G.W.F. Hegel and Hölderlin, Johann Christian Friedrich would have a lasting impact on his thought. Through impassioned discussions of the French Revolution, Greek tragedy, and philosophers like Spinoza, Kant, Immanuel , and Fichte, Johann Gotlieb , these three students mutually forged one another’s ideas in this fertile environment of intellectual exchange. Like Hegel and Hölderlin, Schelling would not go into the priesthood, but sought to tutor for a wealthy European family. After tutoring for several years, Schelling’s

Schellings System of Transcendental Idealism Ideen zur einer Philosophie der Natur Ideas for a Philosophy of Nature System des transcendentalen Idealismus System of Transcendental Idealism Philosophical Investigations into the Essence of Human Freedom , and Die Weltalter (1811, The Ages of the World Schellings System of Transcendental Idealism is an explanation of how subjectivity may be either compatible or incompatible with objectivity. It is concerned with the question of how the self may become both subject and object for itself, and it attempts to show how the mutual concurrence of subjective and objective viewpoints in consciousness may establish the unity of the ideal with the real. Transcendental idealism, according to Schelling, is a system for all knowledge. A system may be a comprehensive set of rules or principles, which are logically structured and which are internally consistent. Knowledge of reality may be attained when there is a reciprocal concurrence of the self with nature, of the subjective with the objective, and of the conscious with the unconscious. Idealism is a philosophy that the nature of reality is mental or spiritual and that the world consists of ideas. Thus, transcendental idealism affirms that a transcendental unity of the self and nature, of subject and object, and of the conscious and the unconscious is a condition for knowledge.

The non-ego, Fichte had said, is the unconscious product of the ego, or, what amounts to the same thing, the product of the unconscious ego. But, Schelling objects, the unconscious ego is not really the ego; what is unconscious is not yet ego or subject, but both subject and object, or rather, neither one nor the other. Since the ego does not exist without the non-ego, we cannot say that it, produces the non-ego, without adding, conversely: the non-ego produces the ego. There is no object without a subject, - as Berkeley had previously declared, - and in this sense Fichte truly says that the subject makes the object; but neither can there be a subject without an object. Hence the existence of the objective world is as much the condition sine qua non of the existence of the ego, as conversely. Fichte, who implicitly recognized this in his profession of pantheistic faith, regards the distinction between the empirical ego and the absolute ego as fundamental to his thought. But what right has he to speak of an absolute ego, when it is certain that the ego, or the subject, is
