Home Library Philosophy Dictionary Sellars, Wilfrid (1912-89) The son of the philosopher Roy Wood Sellars (1880-1973), Sellars was educated at Michigan, and after time at Buffalo and Oxford completed his doctorate at Harvard. He taught at Iowa, Minnesota and Yale, but established himself from 1963 at Pittsburgh. His early work represented a blend of analytic philosophy with logical positivism , and together with others he founded the journal Philosophical Studies to act as a platform for this approach, and edited influential works bringing such methods before the American profession ( Readings in Philosophical Analysis , 1949, and Readings in Ethical Theory , 1952). Sellars's own work revolved around the difficulties of combining the scientific image of people and their world, with the manifest image , or natural conception of ourselves as acquainted with intentions, meanings, colours, and other definitive aspects of the human world. His reputation was established by his most influential paper ‘Empiricism and the Philosophy of Mind’ (1956), which was possibly the central text introducing functionalism in the philosophy of mind (see also use (of words) ). In this and many other papers Sellars explored the nature of thought and experience, defending the view of thought as a kind of inner speech, and above all attacking the

    Robert Brandom
Wilfrid Sellars is the greatest American philosopher since Charles Sanders Peirce. He is the most profound and systematic epistemological thinker of the 20th Century. When intellectual historians look back at the progress of philosophy, our century will appear as a time when, after three hundred and fifty years, we finally saw through Descartes. It is in our time that the collection of puzzles and problems that have collected around the Cartesian dualism of body and mind has been supplanted by those associated with what now appears to be the more fundamental Humean-Kantian dualism of fact and norm, which appeared only darkly and misleadingly in its Cartesian guise. Heading the list of names they will associate with that conceptual sea-change are Wittgenstein and Sellars.
Our century will also appear as having placed language at the center of the semantic stage that categories of thought used to occupy. Concern with ideas has been succeeded by concern with meanings and sentences. Heading the list of names they will associate with that shift of problematic are those of Wittgenstein, Dummett, Quine, and Sellars. Alone among this distinguished group, Sellars never allows his recoil from Cartesian models of the mind to drive him into behaviorist hostility to inner episodes as such he has always taken seriously the fact that "all is not dark within".
The last hundred years have been a time of unprecedented progress in formal logic. When the historians look back to the crucial philosophical appreciations of the expressive role played by formal logistical idioms and its lessons for understanding the structure of the scientific enterprise and its products, heading the list of authors will be Frege, Russell, Carnap, and Sellars.

    ARISTOTELIAN PHILOSOPHIES OF MIND
    by
    Wilfrid Sellars
Published in Philosophy for The Future, The Quest of Modern Materialism , edited by Roy Wood Sellars, V.J. McGill, and Marvin Farber (New York: The Macmillan Co., 1949): 544-70.
I propose in this essay to examine certain concepts and propositions which make up the backbone of the Aristotelian philosophy of mind. Since I do not have the space to develop my argument by way of detailed commentary on texts and quotations, and since isolated quotations are notoriously two-faced and of little scholarly value compared to the space necessary to make them intelligible to the non-technical reader, I shall instead proceed by developing as clearly as possible the assumptions and conclusions which, as I see it, are typical of the way in which classical Aristotelianism dealt with problems relating to the nature of thought. By laying bear its logical skeleton, I hope to show how reasonable the Aristotelian philosophy was, and that, in so far as it made mistakes, the mistakes were not foolish but sprang from plausibilities and confusions the true character of which could be exposed only with the aid of intellectual tools which were centuries in the future, and are not even yet in general use among philosophers.
Before we turn to this more specific task, however, we must first [545] sketch the general framework of ideas in terms of which this philosophy approaches its problems. The framework is the hylomorphic conception of the world; that is to say, its interpretation in terms of the contrast between matter (
