These modules were derived from those originally designed by Chelomei in the 1960's for the Almaz military station programme. As the Soviet Union collapsed Mir stayed in orbit, but the final modules were years late and could only be completed with American financial assistance. Kept flying over a decade beyond its rated life, Mir proved a source of pride to the Russian people and proved the ability of their cosmonauts and engineers to improvise and keep operations going despite all manner of challenges and mishaps. 9. Gautfp
A 1994 essay by Greg Gaut. Explores Solovyov s place in the theological conversation.
    http://members.valley.net/~transnat/gautfp.html
This article is one of a series which will be published by The Transnational Vladimir Solovyov Society at this web site. It is published with permission from "Modern Greek Studies Yearbook" in which it first appeared, Vol. 10/11 (1994/1995). Greg Gaut is a professor of history at St. Mary's University of Minnesota; e-mail: ggaut@smumn.edu Christian Politics: Vladimir Solovyov's Social Gospel Theology Greg Gaut ON 28 MARCH 1881, the philosopher Vladimir Solovyov, then 28 years old, was lecturing on Slavophile themes to a large audience in St. Petersburg. Towards the end of the lecture, he mentioned the six members of the terrorist organization Narodnaia volya [The People s Will] who were then on trial for the assassination of Alexander II. He told the audience that the regicide laid before the new tsar the "unprecedented opportunity to affirm the Christian principle of all-forgiveness" by pardoning the assassins of his father. Some observers claimed that students in the audience responded with shouts of "bravo," apparently interpreting his words as an endorsement of the radical movement, and that older members of the audience shouted at him angrily. According to his own report, Solovyov felt compelled to return to the podium in order to avoid misunderstanding. He told the audience that his point was only that a Christian state should not employ the death penalty. Although Solovyov did not intend to endorse the revolutionaries, his speech caused a "scandal" and was brought to the attention of the authorities, including the Minister of the Interior and Tsar Alexander III himself. His call for "Christian all-forgiveness," however, had no effect on the outcome of the case. On April 3, the government hanged five of the defendants, and commuted to life imprisonment the sentence of the sixth, who was pregnant. The Tsar then decided to reprimand Solovyov for "inappropriate opinions" and temporarily stop him from lecturing. This leniency was no doubt based on the fact that the young man was well known as the rising intellectual star of conservative nationalist circles, and moreover, the son of the late historian Sergei Solovyov, who had been a tutor to the Tsar.

    Vladimir Solovyov (1853—1900)
Solovyov was a 19th Century Russian Philosopher. He is considered a prolific but complicated character. His output aimed to be a comprehensive philosophical system, yet he produced what is considered contentious, theosophical and fundamentally inconclusive results. This article examines in detail Slovyov’s five main works. It also looks into the controversy he generated and his possible philosophical legacy. In the course of five main works – three were completed, two were left unfinished – Solovyov demonstrated a predilection for grand topics of study and an ambitious aim to produce a comprehensive philosophical system that rejected accepted notions of contemporary European Philosophy. In his first major work, The Crisis of Western Philosophy (written when he was twenty-one) he argues against positivism and for moving away from a dichotomy of “speculative” (rationalist) and “empirical” knowledge in favour of a post-philosophical enquiry that would reconcile all notions of thought in a new transcendental whole. He carried on his attempted synthesis of rationalism, empiricism and mysticism in

Vladimir Sergeyevich Solovyov (sometimes written in English as Soloviev) was a philosopher, poet, literary critic and a mystic with an intense connection to the Divine in the form of the feminine archetype of Sophia or Holy Wisdom. His writings had a strong influence on Russian Symbolist poetry and on Russian spirituality in general in the early 20th century. Solovyov was born in Moscow in 1853. His father was a famous historian and a professor at Moscow University. At the age of nine, triggered by the first frustrated longings of love for a girl, Solovyov had the first in a series of three mystical encounters with Sophia.

Solovyov (the last name meaning “nightingale” in Russian) was also instrumental in the Russian spiritual renaissance at the beginning of the twentieth century. He was the first Russian academic philosopher, and the first to articulate a complete philosophical system, changing the trend of Russian philosophy. Solovyov did not think of himself as a philosopher, but as a prophet whose discoveries would bring about universal regeneration. He believed that Western philosophy and civilization had reached the high point of its development, and that the Russian nation had a mission to initiate a new cultural age by uniting the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches in a theocracy governed by the Pope and the Tzar. He taught that development was a progression from primitive unity through differentiation to a higher reintegration. He also asserted that the physical world was undergoing a process of reintegration which required the establishment of “all-unity,” the reuniting of the physical world with God in a kingdom of heaven on earth.
