  • ASIN: Book Description Edith Stein lived an unconventional life. Born into a devout Jewish family, she drifted into atheism in her mid teens, took up the study of philosophy, studied with Edmund Husserl, the founder of phenomenology, became a pioneer in the women's movement in Germany, a military nurse in World War I, converted from atheism to Catholic Christianity, became a Carmelite nun, was murdered at Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1942, and canonized by Pope John Paul II. Renowned philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre here presents a fascinating account of Edith Stein's formative development as a philosopher.

    Edith Stein (1891 - 1942)

    Biography
German Jew who took the name of Teresa Benedicta of the Cross as a Roman Catholic nun. On 10/18/1998, she was canonized by the Church as a Saint. In that she was born Jewish, Jewish leaders termed the canonization "problematic," "offensive" and "an attempt to appropriate the Holocaust without coming to grips with it." The act is seen by some to be part of Pope John Paul II's grand plan for the church's millennial jubilee, an orchestration of Catholic-Jewish brotherhood. Stein entered the Carmelite convent at Cologne in 1934, taking the vows of a Carmelite nun. While there, she completed her metaphysical work, "Endliches und ewiges Sein." Sister Teresa's faith did not shield her from the Nazi horror. She was made to wear the Jewish star, and although her order transferred her to Holland in 1938, she was rounded up along with her sister Rosa, also a convert, and other Jews on 7/26/1942 by the Nazi occupation forces. Survivors of the death camp testified that she helped all other sufferers with great compassion. On 8/09/1942, she and her sister both died in the gas chambers of Auschwitz.

    http://web.tiscali.it/nostreradici/silenzio_colpevole.htm
Padre Santo!

Memorial Day August 9th Bibliography Novena of the Holy Spirit Edith Stein Born on October 12, 1891, of Jewish parents, Siegried Stein and Auguste Courant, in Breslau, Germany, Edith Stein from her earliest years showed a great aptitude for learning, and by the time of the outbreak of World War I, she had studied philology and philosophy at the universities of Breslau and Goettingen. After the war, she resumed her higher studies at the University of Freiburg and was awarded her doctorate in philosophy Suma Cum Laude . She later became the assistant and collaborator of Professor Husserl, the famous founder of phenomenology, who greatly appreciated her brilliant mind. After her conversion, Edith spent her days teaching, lecturing, writing and translating, and she soon became known as a celebrated philosopher and author, but her own great longing was for the solitude and contemplation of Carmel, in which she could offer herself to God for her people. It was not until the Nazi persecution of the Jews brought her public activities and her influence in the Catholic world to a sudden close that her Benedictine spiritual director gave his approval to her entering the Discalced Carmelie Nuns’ cloistered community at Cologne-Lindenthal on 14 October 1933. The following April, Edith received the Habit of Carmel and the religious name of "Teresia Benedicta ac Cruce," and on Easter Sunday, 21 April 1935, she made her Profession of Vows.

A Woman of the Third Millenium in the End of the Second
    Edith
Stein 's views on woman hood are just beginning to be dissected by theologians in light of the popularity of Pope John Paul the Great's "Theology of the Body."
She explores the vocation of men and women, in particular, by expanding upon Aquinas's 'anima forma corporis' in her discussions of `woman's soul'. She is quite candid about her beliefs: "I am convinced that the species humanity embraces the double species man and woman; that the essence of the complete human being is characterized by this duality; and that the entire structure of the essence demonstrates the specific character. There is a difference, not only in body structure and in particular physiological functions, but also in the entire corporeal life. The relationship of soul and body is different in man and woman; the relationship of soul to body differs in their psychic life as well as that of the spiritual faculties to each other"
In her analyses, St. Edith Stein is uncompromisingly orthodox on the role of men and women in society and relation to each other. The Virgin Mary is highlighted as a model several times throughout the book. Interestingly, though, she highlights and expands more than any other writer that I have come across the strength, validity and necessity of spiritual maternity in all areas of life. In doing so, she vividly explores what John Paul II later termed "the feminine genius", though it is never labeled as such in her
