Edith Stein was born in 1891 in Breslau, Germany to Jewish parents. From an early age, she displayed intellectual gifts and a hunger for learning. Edith Maude Eaton , born March 15 in Macclesfield Cheshire England - died April 7 in Montreal, Quebec Canada , was an author best known under the Chinese pseudonym, "Sui Sin Far." Edith Maude Eaton was the daughter of Englishman Edward Eaton, a merchant who met her Chinese mother while on a business trip to Shanghai, China . Her mother was Grace "Lotus Blossom" Trefusis, the adopted daughter of English missionaries. Edith was the oldest daughter and second child of fourteen children. In the early 1870s, the Eaton family left England to live in Hudson, New York but stayed there only a short time before relocating to Montreal. Her father struggled to make a living and the large family went through difficult times. Because of their poverty, at a young age Edith had to leave school to work in order to help support her family. Nonetheless, the children were educated at home and raised in an intellectually stimulating environment that saw both Edith and her younger sister Winnifred (1875-1954) become successful writers.

Sarah Borden - Stein: Edith Stein Summary:
Edith Stein was beatified in 1987 and canonized in 1998 but is still relatively unknown in the English-speaking world. She provides an example of a Christian thinker deeply engaged in the debates of her own day, and her work offers models and insights for addressing the questions of the twenty-first century. Sarah Borden presents an overview of St Edith Stein's life and thought, beginning with her biography. She then covers her early work in phenomenology, her political writings, her studies on women and women's education, as well her later turn to medieval metaphysics, and spiritual and religious texts. The final chapter covers the controversies surrounding Stein's beatification and canonization. Arranged by topic and proceeding largely in chronological order, the book is accessible and aimed at a general audience, although the material is presented in such a way as to be useful to specialists.

Edith Stein — Convert, Nun, Martyr
      LAURA GARCIA
Most of Edith Stein's writing on women and women's vocation stems from the decade of her professional life between her conversion and her entrance into the Carmelite community at Cologne.
      Edith Stein
Edith Stein is one of those people whose entire life seems to be a sign. She was born on Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, in 1891 in Breslau, Germany (now Wroclaw, Poland), the youngest of eleven children in a devout Jewish family. During the summer of 1921, at the age of twenty-nine, Stein was vacationing with friends but found herself alone for the evening. She picked up, seemingly by chance, the autobiography of St. Teresa of Avila, founder of the Carmelite Order. She read it in one sitting, decided that the Catholic faith was true, and went out the next day to buy a missal and a copy of the Catholic catechism. She was baptized the following January, but her desire immediately to enter the Carmelites was delayed for a time. Her advisers saw that her conversion and claustration would be a double blow to her mother, and they knew the Church could benefit enormously from her contributions as a speaker and writer. While on a trip during Holy Week of 1933, Edith stopped in Cologne at the Carmelite convent during the service for Holy Thursday. She attended it with a friend, and by her own account, the homily moved her very deeply. She wrote:
