Jewish author. His father wanted him to study languages, but at the University of Vienna he studied at the Philosophical Faculty. Evenso he learned several modern languages. He always raised questions and liked to discuss them all night. His friends never sam him read contemporary newspapers.
In 1901 he went to Sigmund Freud with an outline for his work "Geschlecht und Charakter" ("Sex and Character"). It was a work about bisexuality and in didn't treat women and Jews kindly. Freud refused to write a recommendation and advised him to collect empirical evidence for the next ten years. Freud didn't tell him that he wanted to publish on bisexuality himself. It is possible that Weininger had taken his thesis of human bisexuality from Freuds work.
After "Geschlecht und Character" was published he went to Italy to await the results of the publication. He was hoping to become famous, but nothing happened. In 1903 he committed suicide in the house where Beethoven died in 1827. After his death Freud said he thought the young man had a touch of genius. August Strindberg thought it was a frightening book and acknowledged Weininger's opinion that man was superior over woman. Some people considered him to have been a madman, but after his death his work was of influence to other thinkers like Ludwig Wittgenstein. In later years the nazi's used it where it suited them.

Adelheid, Otto's mother, whose health was frail , was a submissive wife to his father, Leopold, a renowned goldsmith and powerful personality. Of his six brothers and sisters, only four reached adulthood . A gifted student, Otto entered the University of Vienna in 1898 and took courses in all the various subjects he would later treat in his Sex and Character (1906). His professors included Friedrich Jodl, Ernst Mach, and Richard von Krafft-Ebing. He also frequently attended gatherings of the university philosophical society. In 1900 he traveled to Paris with Hermann Swoboda to attend a conference on psychology, where he sided with those in favor of an introspective approach to psychology as opposed to an experimental and biological approach. Weininger began writing Sex and Character (origin-ally entitled Eros and Psyche Weininger suffered from severe mood swings of exaltation and depression. During the summer of 1902, he traveled in Northern Europe and, writing to his friend Arthur Gerber, asked, "Am I anything?" Weininger left for Italy in

Go to My Writing for explanation of this document. Otto Weininger Notes Brilliance of Weininger's book ( Sex and Character) Time Out Because what other one is there? His rejection of empirical psychology from the point of view of Kantian freewill, later made so much of by existentialists. Of course there are difficulties with empirical psychology and what statements it feels moved to make about the value and purpose of life. Difficulties answered by the will to power. Assertion of freewill like a subjective interpretation of the will to power. If some psychological system lays down the supposed path to happiness I am of course free to reject that, but why might I feel motivated to do so? Freewill seems an almost meaningless explanation except insofar as it is a confession of relativism, a refusal to judge or classify people's ideas about themselves. Against Weininger, Dollards book Caste and Class in a Southern Town suggests the extent to which character, intelligence and capacity are the result of social position. One might put up a similar case for inferiority of the Negro or even the Irish. Linking of maleness with acceptance of categorical imperative, too tendentious and dogmatic.
