In particular, it is concerned with the "condensed" phases that appear when the number of atoms in a system is larger than the molecular scale and the interactions between the constituents are strong. The most familiar examples of condensed phases are solids and liquids , which arise from the electromagnetic forces between atoms . More exotic condensed phases include the superconducting phase exhibited by certain materials at low temperature , the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases of spins on atomic lattices , and the Bose-Einstein condensate found in certain ultracold atomic systems.

Overview of Condensed Matter Physics Research
Condensed Matter physicists study matter in its nearly unlimited variety of condensed states from liquids to crystalline solids, from thin films to fabricated or chemically-synthesized nanostructures, from quantum Hall electron gases to superconductors, from carbon nanotubes to liquid crystals, and from amorphous structures to complex fluids. We seek both to clarify the fundamental issues behind the striking properties of these systems, and to illuminate their potential for useful application in many areas from electronics to biology and medicine. Condensed matter physics underlies many key devices of information technology, including the transistor, the solid-state laser, optical fiber, magnetic storage media, the liquid crystal display. Much of the explosive growth in Condensed Matter Physics in the last decade has come at the mutual boundaries of physics, chemistry, and materials science. Recently in ever more dramatic ways, this intellectual cross-fertilization is producing key discoveries at the convergence of these fields and biology. The Penn Condensed Matter Physicists helped to create this fruitful trend, and many of our projects are highly interdisciplinary in nature. We work as part of the interdisciplinary Laboratory for Research on the Structure of Matter (LRSM) and the

    Condensed Matter Physics
Condensed Matter Physics deals with fundamental questions concerning the behavior of very large numbers of strongly interacting degrees of freedom. It seeks to provide an understanding of the macroscopic physical phenomena and properties that arise from what are usually well understood basic microscopic interactions. Having its beginnings in solid state physics , primarily concerned with the electronic properties of solids, modern condensed matter physics has grown to include study of such diverse systems as solids, liquids, superfluids, glasses, polymers, gels, colloids, neural networks, macromolecules, and indeed any system in which many interacting basic components lead to complex or qualitatively new cooperative behavior at the macroscopic scale. Research in modern condensed matter physics spans the range from understanding the properties of exotic and artificially fabricated materials, to fundamental questions concerning ordering, phase transitions, and critical behavior in classical and quantum statistical systems.

    Condensed Matter Physics
Condensed Matter Physics (CMP) is one of the biggest research fields in modern physics. CMP is concerned with understanding how the most fundamental properties of matter at the atomic and even sub-atomic scale lead to macroscopically observable phenomena. The field has firm theoretical foundations derived from traditional subjects such as quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics. One could argue that the semiconductor revolution of the past 50 years is a direct result of advances made in CMP. Understanding of superconductivity is another key achievement in the field.
Modern Condensed Matter Physics is an interdisciplinary endeavor. The field now encompasses both hard and soft matter systems. A particularly exciting, and relatively new development, has been the use of quantum many body techniques and other condensed matter approaches to address key questions in biology. Interesting examples include charge transport in single DNA molecules, and coherence in photosynthetic arrays.
The CMP program at UQ is BIG QUESTION focused. We operate at the boundary between physics, chemistry and biology. We address key questions in specific systems such as organic superconductors and biological macromolecules, and also work on more general problems such as those associated with conducting organics, quantum phase transitions in random systems and single molecule electron transport. Our approach is based upon combining theory with experiment across a range of disciplines such as quantum many body theory, quantum chemistry, synthetic organic chemistry, molecular biophysics, spectroscopy and experimental solid state physics. Even though our program was only started in 2000, we believe that we are the most expansive and innovative CMP group in Australia. Our vision is to project this local success onto the world stage, and to be regarded as leading international players in modern condensed matter physics.

Title: Percolation in self-similar networks Authors: M. Angeles Serrano Dmitri Krioukov Marian Boguna Comments: 4 pages, 3 figures Subjects: Disordered Systems and Neural Networks (cond-mat.dis-nn) ; Social and Information Networks (cs.SI); Physics and Society (physics.soc-ph) We provide a simple proof that graphs in a general class of self-similar networks have zero percolation threshold. The considered self-similar networks include random scale-free graphs with given expected node degrees and zero clustering, scale-free graphs with finite clustering and metric structure, growing scale-free networks, and many real networks. The proof and the derivation of the giant component size do not require the assumption that networks are treelike. Our results rely only on the observation that self-similar networks possess a hierarchy of nested subgraphs whose average degree grows with their depth in the hierarchy. We conjecture that this property is pivotal for percolation in networks.

Superconductivity in the Hubbard model: an exact solution
June 15, 2010
If you read our article on strong correlations , you may remember that we still do not have an exact solution the Hubbard model in more than one dimension. You might also recall how important it was to learn something definite about superconductivity in this model. Now Raghu, Kivelson and Scalapino have published a paper proposing a way to obtain the superconducting phase diagram of this model in the weak-coupling limit: S. Raghu, S. A. Kivelson, and D. J.
