From the Copernican Revolution to superstrings, a chronology of more than 500 of the greatest discoveries in natural philosophy.
http://www.weburbia.com/pg/historia.htm
Physics Time-Line
From the Greek philosophers to string theorists, this is the chronology of discoveries in physics and cosmology. According to Legend, Archimedes discovered the principle of buoyancy while taking a bath. He jumped out and ran through the streets shouting "Eureka!" The scientific revolution took off 1800 years later after Gutenberg introduced the printing press in Europe and Coperincus broke the old cosmology and put humans in their place away from the centre of the universe. Since then, thousands of scientists have experienced that Eureka moment when they realised that they have seen a fundamental truth not known before. These pages contain, in chronological order, a selective list of those discoveries from natural philosophy. These are the findings which have helped us understand the laws of physics, the universe and our place in it. The time-line is not yet complete and many more scientists will have the priviledge of contributing to its future. Today the internet is taking over from print as the primary means of communicating scientific discoveries and anyone who wants to can participate.

E rnest O. Lawrence (1901-1958) helped elevate American physics to world leadership. His invention of the cyclotron, an accelerator of subatomic particles, won him the Nobel Prize in 1939. His entrepreneurial development of the Radiation Laboratory at Berkeley ushered in the era of " Big Science. " During World War II Lawrence and his machines took part in the Manhattan Project, which produced the first atomic bombs. In the early Cold War years he played a key role in forging a new relationship between science and the federal government and in the establishment of a system of National Laboratories, two of which now bear his name. The Institute of Nautical Archaeology (INA) is a global leader in the field of underwater exploration and discovery. INA endorses and follows the Charter on the Protection and Management of Underwater Cultural Heritage (1996) as ratified by the 11th ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites) General Assembly, held in Sofia, Bulgaria. Since 1973, we have sponsored almost than 200 excavations and surveys around the world, from the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea to the Yukon River. In the quest to uncover our collective past from one of the world's most demanding environments, INA has pioneered technologies and fostered excellence in all aspects of nautical archaeology, from excavation and conservation through to preservation, analysis and publication. We invite you to discover the world of nautical archaeology and to join us as we explore human history.

http://www.nzbirds.com/birds/kakarikiyellow.html
nzbirds birds (of New Zealand) bird gallery Kakariki, the yellow-crowned parakeet That food failure was the cause of these irruptions or influxes is indicated, according to the ornithologist, W. R. Oliver, by the fact that in some districts at the same time there was also an invasion of rats. In 1888, he says, there was an irruption of red-crowned parakeets accompanied by smaller numbers of yellow-crowned in Marlborough. On such occasions the parakeets showed no fear of man who tried to lessen the damage done by the birds by shooting them. The parakeets, as the story goes, were not much frightened by the sound of guns and flew just a short distance away and continued foraging. Many thousands were shot. Two severe irruptions took place in Canterbury in the eighties when it was thought that the birds came from Westland driven out by the failure of food supply on account of wet and cold weather. They were considered among the worst pests in the Hutt Valley in the early days of European settlement and made serious inroads into the hop gardens of Nelson and the wheat crops of Otago. After fifteen years or more of these visitations the number of parakeets decreased considerably and they did not again recover. The Kakariki are members of the parrot family which are mainly tropical birds notable for their colourful plumage. There are two main species, the yellow and red-crown. The red-crown tends to be larger than the yellow.

Physical education, done by fathers for sons, was rarely formalized. Physical education, in its most basic form, existed before the earliest academies. The earliest academy in Europe was Plato's. It was established in Greece in 386 B.C. Early academies naturally included physical education as one of the courses they offered. Understanding your body is the basic concept of physical education. SOUTH ASIAN HISTORY Pages from the history of the Indian sub-continent: Science and Technology in India History of the Physical Sciences in India In all early civilizations, the study of the physical sciences was neither formalized nor separated from other branches of knowledge. And at least initially, there were few conscious attempts to study the theory of science independently of the practical innovations and technologies that required some application of scientific principles. In most cases, technological discoveries took place without any knowledge of the underlying scientific principles, through hit and trial, and by experience. Sometimes there was a vague or approximate awareness of the science, but the predominant focus remained on the utilitarian aspects of the technique, on practical efficacy, as opposed to how and why something worked or didn't work. In India, the earliest applications of chemistry took place in the context of medicine, metallurgy, construction technology (such as manufacture of cement and paints) and in textile production and dyeing. But in the process of understanding chemical processes, there also emerged a concomitant interest in attempting to describe the basic elements of matter - what they were composed of, and how they interacted with each other to produce new substances. Natural phenomenon were studied in the context of tides, rainfall, appearance of the sun, the moon and stellar formations, changes in season, weather patterns and agriculture.

56. Apples Of Maine
Review of an identification guide dealing with the history, physical, and cultural characteristics of local apples.
http://www.applesofmaine.com/
A Compilation of the History, Physical, and Cultural Characteristics of all the Varieties of Apples Known to Have Been Grown in the State of Maine by George A. Stilphen Originally published in 1993, this exhaustive, one-of-a-kind identification guide is the one definitive work dealing with the history, physical and cultural characteristics of the more than 700 varieties of apples known to have been grown in the northeastern United States during the past four centuries. This book caused a sensation in the pomological world when it first appeared and so it remains today. There is truly nothing like it! The Apples of Maine not only treats each and every variety at length, but within its pages are also listed virtually every known pomological source in the American English language. There is also a glossary of pomological terms, and, to assist the in-depth researcher, there are four appendices and four indices filled with never before published information. This is truly a must-have book for both the part-time apple hobbyist as well as the advanced researcher. The style of writing speaks equally well to both. Because The Apples of Maine is still in constant demand and has, in fact, become a rare, out-of-print book, the author has decided to release a limited second printing of this autographed and numbered, elegantly hardbound work of over 400 pages. Furthermore, the 1993 price of $45.00, postpaid anywhere in the world, is still in effect. This is planned to be the last printing of this title; don't miss out.

Xanthomonas citri ex Hasse Species Description: Citrus canker is a disease of cultivated citrus plants caused by nonindigenous bacterial pathogen Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri ('Xac'). Genus Xanthomonas consists of gram-negative, rod-shaped, polarly-flagellated bacteria whose members commonly occur as serious plant pathogens. Colonies are typically yellow in color due to the presence of a particular carotenoid pigment identified through relatively simple screening procedures and generally indicative of the genus (Starr and Stephens 1964). The pathogen expresses itself in infected citrus plants as brown, raised lesions on leaves and fruits with oily, water soaked and necrotic margins and a surrounding yellow halo. Affected areas of leaves may fall out in time, leaving holes. Microscopic examination of tissue sliced from the edges of active lesions on infected plants reveals streaming masses of rod-shaped bacteria (DACS 2002
