Laser science predates the invention of the laser itself. Albert Einstein created the foundations for the laser and maser in 1917, via a paper in which he re-derived Max Planck ’s law of radiation using a formalism based on probability coefficients ( Einstein coefficients ) for the absorption spontaneous emission , and stimulated emission of electromagnetic radiation.

The emitted laser light is notable for its high degree of spatial and temporal coherence , unattainable using other technologies. Spatial coherence typically is expressed through the output being a narrow beam which is diffraction-limited , often a so-called "pencil beam." Temporal (or longitudinal) coherence implies a polarized wave at a single frequency whose phase is correlated over a relatively large distance (the coherence length ) along the beam . This is in contrast to thermal or incoherent light emitted by ordinary sources of light whose instantaneous amplitude and phase varys randomly with respect to time and position. Although temporal coherence implies monochromatic emission, there are lasers that emit a broad spectrum of light, or emit different wavelengths of light simultaneously.

    Autumn Semester, 20 lectures, 10 credits
    This third year core module covers the quantum theory of atoms and atomic spectra, and also the basic principles of lasers.
    Course description
    PHY332 covers the quantum theory of simple atoms and atomic spectra, and also the basic principles of lasers. The first part of the course covers the physics of atoms and atomic spectra, beginning with hydrogen and then moving on to multi-electron atoms. The second part gives an introduction to laser physics, with emphasis on the basic principles of amplification by stimulated emission. The aims of the course are as follows:
  • to understand the quantum theory of the hydrogen atom and other simple atoms; to describe the main features of atomic spectra ; to understand the basic principles of laser operation;

    Exam Homework The written examination will contain 5 questions. Candidates are exepcted to answer three questions. Question 1 is compulsory and consists of several short parts covering the whole syllabus. Candidates may then choose any two from the remaining four questions which cover parts of the syllabus in more detail.

Torres, MS, and Wai-Fung Cheong, MS, MD The Biomedical Engineering Program, The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, Texas Marion E. Forsman Centennial Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Biomedical Engineering Abstract Within the last few years, lasers have gained increasing use in the management of cardiovascular disease, and laser angioplasty has become a widely performed procedure. For this reason, a basic knowledge of lasers and their applications is essential to vascular surgeons, cardiologists, and interventional radiologists. To elucidate some fundamental concepts regarding laser physics, we describe how laser light is generated and review the properties that make lasers useful in medicine. We also discuss beam profile and spotsize, as well as dosimetric specifications for laser angioplasty. After considering laser-tissue interaction and light propagation in tissue, we explain how the aforementioned concepts apply to direct laser angioplasty and laser-balloon angioplasty. An understanding of these issues should prove useful not only in performing laser angioplasty but in comparing the reported results of various laser applications.
