    The Founding Fathers Unlike other physical theories, quantum mechanics was not the the invention of one or two scientists. Those who took part in its discovery are collectively called the founding fathers. Planck, Einstein, Bohr, Heisenberg, Born, Jordan, Pauli, Fermi, Schrodinger, Dirac, de Broglie, Bose all made notable contributions. During the first part of the 20th century scientists were faced with a range of extraordinary physical phenomena showing the effects of quantum mechanics. They wondered whether the universe could really be as strange a place as their laboratory experiments appeared to show. Bit by bit they pieced together the results of experiments and found rules obeyed by matter. In 1936 Birkhoff and Von Neumann collected the rules together into the accepted axioms of quantum mechanics. Birkhoff and Von Neumann showed that the axioms of quantum mechanics provide a consistent framework in which it is once again possible to predict the results of experiment, at least statistically. But, although these laws are mathematically consistent, most scientists agree that they are counter intuitive, and do not have any satisfactory known physical interpretation.

    We have seen in the previous chapter that the properties of refraction, diffraction, and interference all require a wave picture of light. In this chapter we will begin to study other aspects associated with light which cannot be explained with a wave picture, but in fact need a particle picture. The coexistence of phenomena which require both a wave and a particle picture is called a wave-particle duality , and is at the heart of the modern theory of quantum physics.

    What is Quantum Physics?
    Quantum physics is a branch of science that deals with discrete, indivisible units of energy called quanta as described by the Quantum Theory. There are five main ideas represented in Quantum Theory:
  • Energy is not continuous, but comes in small but discrete units.
  • The elementary particles behave both like particles and like waves.
  • The movement of these particles is inherently random.
  • It is physically impossible to know both the position and the momentum of a particle at the same time. The more precisely one is known, the less precise the measurement of the other is.
  • The atomic world is nothing like the world we live in. While at a glance this may seem like just another strange theory, it contains many clues as to the fundamental nature of the universe and is more important then even relativity in the grand scheme of things (if any one thing at that level could be said to be more important then anything else). Furthermore, it describes the nature of the universe as being much different then the world we see. As Niels Bohr said, "Anyone who is not shocked by quantum theory has not understood it."

    Particle/wave duality is perhaps the easiest way to get aquatinted with quantum theory because it shows, in a few simple experiments, how different the atomic world is from our world.

    What Is Quantum Physics?:
    Quantum physics is the study of the behavior of matter and energy at the molecular, atomic, nuclear, and even smaller microscopic levels. In the early 20th century, it was discovered that the laws that govern macroscopic objects do not function the same in such small realms.
    What Does Quantum Mean?:
    "Quantum" comes from the Latin meaning "how much." It refers to the discrete units of matter and energy that are predicted by and observed in quantum physics. Even space and time, which appear to be extremely continuous, have smallest possible values.
    Who Developed Quantum Mechanics?:
    As scientists gained the technology to measure with greater precision, strange phenomena was observed. The birth of quantum physics is attributed to Max Planck's 1900 paper on blackbody radiation. Development of the field was done by Max Planck, Albert Einstein Niels Bohr , Werner Heisenberg, Erwin Schroedinger, and many others. Ironically, Albert Einstein had serious theoretical issues with quantum mechanics and tried for many years to disprove or modify it.

    What it is?
    Quantum physics is a branch of science that deals with discrete, indivisible units of energy called quanta as described by the Quantum Theories.
    Quantum physics invloves the study of the realm of the very small, at the atomic and subatomic level, such as electrons, photons and quarks. Therefore, it’s operating at the below-cell level of the body.
    Quantum Physics is also the study of the forces that act on atomic and subatomic entities. There are 4 forces: gravity, electromagnetism, the strong force (binds particles in the atom’s nucleus) and the weak force (responsible for radioactive/beta decay).
    Quantum Physics also studies the fields through which forces move. Example of fields are the gravitational field and electromagnetic field. A field can extend throughout a large region of space so that its influence is all-pervading. Standard quantum physics has three primary areas of focus:
    • Quantum mechanics : The study of the structure and behavior of subatomic particles. Quantum electrodynamics : QED - A “field” theory of the interaction primarily of electrons and the electromagnetic field; a theory of light (photons).
