    Overview
Physics is the study of forces, space, and time at its most basic level and provides the foundation for all physical sciences. Explore the fundamental forces in nature through experimental investigation of atomic, nuclear, and elementary particle systems. The Bachelor of Science in Space Physics is an applied physics program designed to produce graduates who can work in space- and aerospace-related industries. The program requirements in this discipline offer a choice from four areas of concentration: Astrophysics - Evolution of the stars, structure of galaxies, search for dark matter and objects such as black holes, quasars and neutrinos. Remote sensing - Development of remote sensing devices including radar, infrared, optical, X-ray and gamma-ray, for spacecraft as well as scientific, commercial, civil and military applications. Particle physics and cosmology - Study the physical processes that started the universe including the Big Bang theory, the expanding universe, and general relativity.

The Space Plasma Physics Team at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL conducts experimental and theoretical research to support the engineering, scientific, and operational activities of the NASA Office of Space Flight and Office of Space Science. Our principal objective is to develop an understanding of the physical processes that control the geospace plasma environment and its interaction with both natural and man-made bodies in space. Our unique emphases are on the plasma that originates in the ionosphere, and its heating in auroral light displays. The heating causes plasma to escape from Earth's gravity, producing a plasma fountain, which in turn has been found to supply plasma to the acceleration regions that generate disruptive space plasma storms. The basic physics of moving plasmas, and their interactions with bodies in space, provide the fundamental basis for our research.

Space (physics)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search In a simple understanding space is something that we all know and that is measured in the three dimensions length width and height In physics a definition of space is difficult, because it cannot be explained by something else, because there is nothing more fundamental known at present. Therefore the only definition that one uses is done by measurement . (The same is done with time and mass The standard space interval, called a standard meter or simply meter, is defined as the distance traveled by light in a vacuum during a time interval of exactly 1/299,792,458 of a second Before Einstein's work on relativistic physics, time and space were viewed as independent dimensions. Einstein's discoveries have shown that due to relativity of motion our space and time can be mathematically combined into one symmetric object — space-time
change Notes
  • This definition combined with present definition of time makes our space-time to be Minkowski space and makes special relativity absolutely correct simply by definition.

    Space Plasmas Group
The Space Plasmas Group investigates current research topics in space plasmas. Since the 1972 discovery of Oxygen in the Earth's magnetosphere by this group, we have been a leader in the investigation of plasma composition in the Earth's magnetosphere and near comets. We have flown plasma composition experiments on the ISEE DE AMPTE , and CRRES magnetospheric missions and we have been co-investigators on the Giotto cometary mission. Currently, we have operating composition experiments on the FAST and POLAR missions. Future missions include the IMAGE magnetospheric mission and the Rosetta cometary mission as well as collaboration on the Cluster magnetospheric mission. Other activities within our group include design of small, free-flying magnetometers for space applications, all sky imaging of the aurora from the Antarctic, and planning future space plasmas missions.

Space Physics is the branch of geophysics that deals with the study of the ionized layers of planetary atmospheres, magnetospheres, and the interplanetary environment . It is at the crossroads of geophysics and astrophysics. Space physics is to a large degree a form of applied plasma physics, that studies multi-component plasmas, plasma-neutral gas mixtures and dusty plasmas as they are encountered in the vicinity of the Earth and throughout the Solar System.
