NSCL News
Getting America Excited About Science and Engineering For two action-packed days, thousands of people will descend on the National Mall in Washington D.C. to experience the excitement of scientific discovery, and NSCL and FRIB will be there to help.
A typical household iron gets pretty hot, as some children and most bachelors discover the hard way. Now imagine if the same iron drew 200 times as much power. It would burn a hole straight through those favorite “wrinkle-free” pants and likely the ironing board too. Take one step further and consider condensing all of that heat and power into an area about half the size of the head of a pin. Now we’re talking about a beam so powerful that it would burn away most anything faster than Indiana Jones’s Ark of the Covenant.
FRIB Earns CD-1 Milestone
Michigan State University’s Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) project passed an important milestone last week when it earned Critical Decision 1 approval from the U.S. Department of Energy. This means that work can continue on the preliminary design of the project in fiscal year 2011-2012 with full financial support.
