Endothelial cells steer HSC fate Article by Kobayashi et al. Endothelial cells form a vascular niche that supports haematopoietic stem cell function. Rafii and colleagues now find that Akt-mediated activation of endothelial cells induces angiocrine factors to promote long-term haematopoietic stem cell repopulation capacity while co-activation of Akt and MAPK shifts the balance towards maintenance and differentiation of their progenitors.
Focus on Autophagy
Autophagy targets damaged organelles and proteins for lysosomal degradation. This potent degradation mechanism has crucial roles in development, immune defence, programmed cell death, tumour suppression, neurodegeneration and stress response. The September 2010 issue of Nature Cell Biology presents a series of specially commissioned Reviews, Perspectives and Commentaries highlighting new insights into this process.

There is not one cell , but many different types of cells . Cells are like people. Look around you and you will see that everyone has their own job. Cells are the same. They all have their own job, and are therefore specialised. The theoretical plant cell used in these pages does not exist, it is just an example I created in order to show all the elements at once. Often, in a specialised cell, not all the elements are present, but some are numerous. We will see that when examining some examples of cells

Welcome to the Department of Biology
Biology at Boston University is a highly integrative department, with faculty teaching and conducting research in the broad range of fields that comprise the contemporary life sciences. The department spans the full spectrum of biological sciences, ranging from cell and molecular biology to ecology and conservation biology, giving us unusual strength in integrative research that addresses questions across multiple levels of biological complexity. The department has four major research and graduate program areas: 1) Neuroscience and 4) Marine Biology . Biology faculty also participate in interdepartmental programs that offer graduate degrees in Neuroscience , and Bioinformatics The undergraduate program includes courses spanning the breadth of interests in the department. Students may also choose to complete an undergraduate specialization in 1) Behavioral Biology Quantitative Biology Neurobiology ; or 5) . We emphasize the integration of teaching and research not only in classes but also by encouraging undergraduates to participate in research. A variety of research opportunities are offered during both the academic year and summer.

NeuroStereology Workshop
An Introduction to Stereology for Neuroscientists
A two day Introduction to Stereology for Neuroscientists to be held at the Horton Grand Hotel in downtown San Diego immediately prior to the Society for Neuroscience Meeting, November 11-12, 2010.

A four day workshop to be held at Marine Biological Laboratory at Woodshole MA. March 19-24, 2011
Organizer: Mark West Professor of Medical Neurobiology, Author of the most cited scientific papers on the application of modern stereological methods to the nervous system
Course Description and Goals The goal of the workshop is to teach a small group of research scientists how to design, supervise, and critically evaluate stereological studies of the nervous system. Stereology is a methodology that provides meaningful quantitative descriptions of the geometry of three-dimensional structures from measurements that are made on two-dimensional images sampled from a structure of interest. The workshop will emphasize modern ”design based” stereology, which is characterized by the preparation and probing of tissue in such a manner that no assumptions about the size, shape, and orientation of the structures being quantified are necessary. Unlike previously available methods, these newer methods produce accurate and robust estimates of total quantities, such as number, length, area and volume. Because of the enhanced power of the data obtained with these methods, they have recently made important contributions to our understanding of the changes in the structure of the brain related to aging and disease and are rapidly becoming the standards required by journals and granting agencies.

Welcome to the
Department of Theoretical Ecology
Teoretisk ekologi
Theoretical ecology is the study of the fundamental forces and processes determining the course of evolution and how ecological systems are assembled and maintained. By its nature, Theoretical ecology therefore transgresses almost all levels of biological organization. Since natural systems are complex, the tools of the trade are mathematics, statistics and computer simulations. Theoretical ecology shares the common scientific attitude that we indeed can reveal generalities and the lawful behaviors of nature despite the awesome and overwhelming diversity of life on Earth.
