The Emotionally Abused and Neglected Child: Identification, Assessment and Intervention: A Practice Handbook Is some injury irreversible? What therapeutic techniques are available to deal with emotional abuse? Can the abusers as well as the abused be helped to change? Case studies are provided to illustrate the features of emotional abuse, and chapters are devoted to the assessment and prediction of emotional abuse, effects of emotional abuse as the child grows up, intervention and treatment and working with the family as a whole. Intervention and treatment of emotional abuse are covered in five extensive chapters, ranging from levels of intervention and service provision at different stages of presenting problems to individual work with children and families. Therapeutic methods include: behavioural/cognitive work with parents and children; family therapy; counselling; group work; attachment-work; play therapy; building resilience; social skills and assertiveness training; problem-solving; and many other techniques designed to deal with the effects of emotional abuse on children and emotionally abusive behaviour of parents and carers. Service provision to help these children is described, elaborated upon, and discussed (e.g. day-nurseries, family centres, foster-placements, home-visitation, case-monitoring, and accommodation of children whose carers experience parenting problems). The last chapter looks at the legal aspects and the difficulties of taking emotional-abuse cases through the courts.

Text of a lecture delivered by psychologist Alice Miller in 1998.

Alice Miller: The Childhood Trauma I gave this lecture at the Lexington 92nd Street YWHA in New York City on October 22, 1998, and could not answer all the questions I was asked due to a lack of time. The audience was very interested in getting more information and deeply involved so I can only hope to be able to come again and to discuss these issues in a meeting with an open end, without time limitations. If you have comments to make to this text, you can send your letter to my publisher at the address below. Thank you for your understanding. Letters can be sent to:

USA Alice Miller: The Childhood Trauma Since adolescence I have wondered why so many people take pleasure in humiliating others. Clearly the fact that some are sensitive to the suffering of others proves that the destructive urge to hurt is not a universal aspect of human nature. So why do some tend to solve their problems by violence while others don't? Philosophy failed to answer my question and the Freudian theory of the death instinct has never convinced me. Nor could I make sense of genetic explanations of the evil, of the naive idea that a human being can be "born bad." Nobody could answer the crucial question: How is it that so many turn-of-the-century German children were born with such malignant genes that they'd later become Hitler's willing executioners? It has always been inconceivable to me that a child who comes into the world among attentive, loving and protective caregivers could become a monster. Then, by closely examining the childhood histories of murderers, especially mass murderers and dictators, I began to comprehend the roots of good and evil: not in the genes, as commonly believed, but in the earliest days of life. Today, neurobiological research seems to fully corroborate what I discovered almost twenty years ago.

Data are gathered through observation, interviews, tests, and experimental methods. Principal topics include language acquisition and development, motor skills, personality development, and social, emotional, and intellectual growth. The field began to emerge in the late 19th century through the work of German psychophysiologist William Preyer, American psychologist G. Stanley Hall , and others. In the 20th century the psychoanalysts Anna Freud and Melanie Klein devoted themselves to child psychology, but its most influential figure was Jean Piaget , who described the various stages of childhood learning and characterized children's perceptions of themselves and the world at each stage. 1) Diagnostic Assessment:
JBCP provides evidence-based assessments of traits consistent with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) for children and young people, starting from 24 months of age. Because early intervention is critical if a young person is to make maximum progress, the sooner a reliable diagnosis is achieved, the sooner an effective intervention plan can commence. Our diagnostic process starts with an initial screening assessment (to establish whether current observations suggest the need for a full assessment). If the screening process suggests the presence of an ASD, a full assessment of adaptive behaviour and autism traits is recommended. Children are diagnosed using observational data from home, pre/school and the clinic, as well as through tools such as the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) and Autism Diagnostic Interview (ADI-R).
2) Early Intervention: Children under 7 years of age are offered treatment in our early intervention program. The program consists of coordinating speech pathology, occupational therapy and child psychology services through our early intervention team. Initially children attend 1-on-1 sessions to build core communication, social, and behavioural skills. When ready, children are offered places in our small group training sessions with their peers.

Contemporary Issues in Early Childhood (CIEC) is a peer-reviewed international research journal. The journal provides a forum for researchers and professionals who are exploring new and alternative perspectives in their work with young children (from birth to eight years of age) and their families. CIEC aims to present opportunities for scholars to highlight the ways in which the boundaries of early childhood studies and practice are expanding, and for readers to participate in the discussion of emerging issues, contradictions and possibilities. CIEC incorporates interdisciplinary, cutting edge work which may include the following areas: poststructuralist, postmodern and postcolonial approaches, queer theory, sociology of childhood, alternative viewpoints of child development, and deal with issues such as language and identity, the discourse of difference, new information technologies, stories and voices, curriculum, culture and pedagogy, or any combination of such ideas. The Editors encourage submission of a variety of high quality manuscripts including: reports of research from a variety of paradigms; articles about research, literature reviews and theoretical discussions; book reviews; colloquia and responses/critiques; invited commentaries.
