Introduction
On these pages you will find an overview of psychological research that I conducted, or was otherwise involved in, at the University of Leuven, between October 1992 and April 1999. It contains all the references to published and unpublished material, a brief description of the research project, some stimulus material, explanation experimental methods, etc. At the time of this writing I am not working in psychological research anymore, hence these pages have become static. No new material will be added anymore, but nevertheless I'm sure that the information as it is now will remain interesting to at least some of you. Thanks for visiting, Paul

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy was Developed by: Albert Ellis Aaron T. Beck , Maxie C. Maultsby, Michael Mahoney, Donald Meichenbaum, David Burns, Michael Mahoney, Marsha Linehan, Arthur Freeman, Overview of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) facilitates a collaborative relationship between the patient and therapist. Together, patient and counselor develop a trusting relationship and mutually discuss the presenting problems to be prioritized and explored in therapy. In Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, the most pressing issue troubling the patient typically becomes the initial focus of treatment. As a result, the patient tends to feel relieved and encouraged that the primary problem that brought him to therapy is immediately being acknowledged and addressed. In Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, problems are tackled head-on in a very practical manner. The patient is coached on the ABC's of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. The therapist explains the connection between thoughts and beliefs and their impact on behavior. How the patient thinks about problems determines the way in which the individual responds to various issues. It's the manner of thinking about life's issues that steers the patient's way of behaving." ~ Excerpt from Family Resource Resources Related to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy:

About
The Canadian Undergraduate Journal of Cognitive Science is an electronic journal published by the Cognitive Science Student Association at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada. Our aim is to provide a forum for students to share work among peers and gain valuable experience in the process of getting an academic paper published. The journal is a unique reference for students, showcasing quality research by other undergraduate students, improving the contact and exchange of ideas between students and cognitive scientists alike, and illustrating the interdisciplinary work that is the hallmark of the field.

This process includes three components:
  • Cognitive Rehabilitation: This has two components, cognitive restructuring and cognitive error correction. The first deals with a much deeper structure of thought. Social Skill Building: The process of teaching both social [interpersonal] and thinking skills to improve perfromance. Culture Restructuring: The process of seeding the culture with memes [sounds like genes], artefacts, icons, and rituals of prosocial competence.

Evolutionary Ecology of Perception Learning and Memory
Edinburgh University has two key research groups currently addressing issues relating to animal perception, learning and memory. We use a number of model systems to test hypotheses regarding the evolutionary processes that shape animal cognitive abilities. Our experimental approaches are largely empirical and involve coordinating experiments in both the laboratory and the field. Our work uses both evolutionary and behavioural approaches to address a range of questions. For example:
  • Why is animal learning and memory ability so variable? How does ecology influence animal cognition? How does early development influence learning and memory? Can we use cognition to study animal welfare? Can fish suffer? Why are there sex differences in cognition and how do these arise? What perceptual mechanisms underlie decision making such as mate-choice, and how do these affect processes such as speciation?

HISTORY OF COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY
- compiled by the Cognitive Processes Classes, Fall, 1997 - 18th CENTURY: THE BRITISH EMPIRICISTS
George Berkeley
Berkeley's most influential essay is A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge. It was this that earned Berkeley the title of "subjective idealist,' imaterialist," "Spiritualist," and these are what helped to make his small book one of the more misunderstood essays in philosophy. What Berkeley set out to achieve was the removing of validity from materialism and to do this by refuting the latent or explicitly materialistic content both in Locke's Essay and in Descartes' and Hobbes' "geometric " theories" of man and society. David Hume (1711-1776)
James Mill (1773-1836)
James Mill believed that the human mind was totally passive. He felt that the mind was a machine functioning in the same way as a clock, acting upon external stimuli. His most important work and contribution to psychology is his book, Analysis of the Phenomena of the Human Mind, written in 1829. Mill states that the mind must be studied through its reduction or analysis into elementary components. Mill believed that ideas and sensations are only certain kinds of mental processes. He felt that ideas result as a process of sensations that have occurred at the same time in a certain order. Thus, James Mill was considered a British empiricist, focusing on the primary role of sensation processes and the relationship between conscious processes and association. John Stuart Mill, who believed in Mental Chemistry, was the son of James Mill.

Ivory and Hearst (2001): The State of the Art in Automating Usability Evaluation of User Interfaces. In ACM Computing Surveys, Vol. 33, No. 4, December 2001.
Tasks solving processes produced by computer users (observed process) contain much information about their mental models, individual problem solving strategy and underlying decision structure for a given task. Our tool AMME analyses observed processes and automatically extracts a Petri net description of the task dependent decision structure (logical structure). This net is extended by goal setting structures (modelling) and can be executed (simulated process). The aim is of simulation is functional equivalence between observed and simulated processes. Based on Activity Theory, three modelling strategies, event-driven, parallel goal setting, and regulation-driven goal setting are presented [1]. Based on all observed actions, the latter strategy leads to full functional equivalence [2]. To reduce the complexity of such models, it became necessary to find out which actions are more relevant for successful task solving. Since the number of actions are high, automatic detection of strategies becomes of interest. Given that the number of users exceeds that of strategies, multiple users will have a strategy in common. Based on a state-transition representation [3], our aim is to find groups of users sharing the same strategy. Following each of three methods (correlation, intersection and exclusion) we define a comparative metric among task solving behaviour. For multiple users, we represent these measures by a matrix system, to find groups of users with common strategies. Multidimensional scaling (MDS) or analytic interpretation indicates distinct user groups [4].
