It has been my experience that gifted and talented persons are more likely to experience a type of depression referred to as existential depression. Although an episode of existential depression may be precipitated in anyone by a major loss or the threat of a loss which highlights the transient nature of life, persons of higher intellectual ability are more prone to experience existential depression spontaneously. Sometimes this existential depression is tied into the positive disintegration experience referred to by Dabrowski (1996).
Existential depression is a depression that arises when an individual confronts certain basic issues of existence. Yalom (1980) describes four such issues (or "ultimate concerns")death, freedom, isolation and meaninglessness. Death is an inevitable occurrence. Freedom, in an existential sense, refers to the absence of external structure. That is, humans do not enter a world which is inherently structured. We must give the world a structure which we ourselves create. Isolation recognizes that no matter how close we become to another person, a gap always remains, and we are nonetheless alone. Meaninglessness stems from the first three. If we must die, if we construct our own world, and if each of us is ultimately alone, then what meaning does life have?

Byron's Biography: Don Juan and Byron's Existential Angst
Scott C. Holstad
About the Author Byron's epic poem, Don Juan , addresses so many issues that it is difficult to narrow the scope of the poem to just one or two. Is the poem an attack on what was current Romantic Era ideology? Is the poem about love and romance? Is it primarily social commentary? Is the poem a description of the Fall of Man? Could it be Byron's own attempt at self therapy? Does the poem hold to a specific world view and if so, is it inherently nihilistic or is the poem actually a moral poem endorsing traditional principles? What, finally, is the poem about? These questions, and more, are some of the relevant issues raised when analyzing Don Juan . As it is certainly likely that Byron is rebelling against stringent Calvinistic principles, it would be remiss to construe the poem as part of the "Either/Or" Syndrome (positive/moral-negative/nihilistic, good/bad, cold/hot, heaven.hell, et cetera). Rather, the poem is a manifestation of Byron's own existential frustration - a complex masterpiece therapeutically exercising human angst and effectively addressing all of the previously mentioned issues. And unlike the angry existential philosophers who follow him some years later, Byron's existential vision is a theistic one: a vision comprised of isolation and loneliness while encompassing a compassion for humanity as a greater whole. Perhaps it would be best to begin this discussion by addressing the most obvious issue raised by the poem: Byron's satire. Byron began

Existential Christianity My name is Timothy Neal, and I have established this website in order to explore the idea that Christianity is an existential communication. The existential has been ignored in Christianity for centuries, and it is my hope to continue the work of Soren Kierkegaard and other Christian Existentialists in locating the essence of Christianity in our existence within the world. Thus, in an Existential Christianity; doctrine, dogma, and systematic theology becomes sub-ordinated. The existential ideals that Jesus espoused should be the core of any Christian philosophy, and the true way to follow Jesus.
It was Soren Kierkegaard that analytically revitalised the existential nature of Jesus Christ. The formal philosophy of Christian Existentialism was birthed from Kierkegaard, and he is indeed a major inspiration for this website and the articles therein. No man has helped me more in my attempt to follow Jesus.

There are many people who feel that there should be a ninth intelligence, existential intelligence (A.K.A.: "wondering smart, cosmic smart, spiritually smart, or metaphysical intelligence"). His relation to the world and to things; 2. His relation to men – both individuals and to the many; 3. His relationship to the mystery of being – which is dimly apparent through all this but infinitely transcends it – which the philosopher calls the absolute and the believer calls God, and which cannot in fact be eliminated from the situation even by a man who rejects both designations. Martin Buber Martin Buber was the son of Carl Buber, an agronomist, and his wifeboth assimilated Jews. When Buber was three his mother left his father, and the boy was brought up by his grandparents in Lemberg (now Lviv, Ukraine). The search after the lost mother became a strong motive for Buber's dialogical thinkinghis I-Thou philosophy. Solomon Buber (1827-1906), the Lemberg grandfather, a wealthy philanthropist, dedicated his life to the critical edition of Midrashim, a part of the nonlegal rabbinic lore. His works show him as a Hebrew gentleman-scholar who was also interested in Greek linguistic parallels. His wife, Adele, was even more a product of the 19th-century Enlightenment movement among eastern European Jewry that sought to modernize Jewish culture.

Self-realization is self-justification
Sat, 2010-03-20 23:20 by Alex Birch I increasingly meet a lot of women in their mid to late 20s, whose worst fear is to become pregnant. They say it'll ruin their whole life. When a kid comes, it's officially over. No more self-realization. But what does it mean to realize oneself today? I'm going to call this one out for what I believe it really is: self-justification. When philosophers like Friedrich Nietzsche urged people to explore their individuality, they weren't really talking about getting drunk at bars every weekend, traveling around the world to "find" your "true" identity, or live off of random jobs and welfare for as long as possible, with as many partners as possible. They were hinting at something else. Self-realization in a modern context is self-justification. It's a catchphrase to justify looming around without any plans for the future. I can get drunk, I can travel, I can work here and there, I can embarrass myself in public. But this isn't really self-realization. It's a way to justify inaction in life. Western women who are still in their late 30s and barely able to maintain a serious relationship have yet to "realize" themselves in any productive way, either for themselves or for society. Did they start up a business? Did they join church? Did they write a great novel? No, they got shitfaced for the last 15 years.

Jaspers was a German philosopher, one of the most important Existentialists in Germany, who approached the subject from man's direct concern with his own existence. In his later work, as a reaction to the disruptions of Nazi rule in Germany and World War II, Jaspers searched for a new unity of thinking that he called world philosophy.

In 1948 he accepted a professorship in philosophy in Basel, Switzerland. Jaspers's major work, Philosophy (1932), gives his view of the history of philosophy and introduces his major themes. Karl Jaspers identified philosophy with philosophical thinking itself, not with any particular set of conclusions. His philosophy is an effort to explore and describe the margins and limits of experience.

Existentialism
[The following material includes parts of a lecture delivered by TA Andrew Irvine in 1998.] Contents Introduction Themes in Existentialism Søren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) Existentialism (Irvine) ... Concluding Unscientific Postscript (Irvine)
Introduction
Existentialism can be thought of as the twentieth-century analogue of nineteenth-century romanticism. The two movements have in common the demand that the whole fabric of life be recognized and taken into account in our thinking and acting. As such they express a form of resistance to reductionist analyses of life and its meaning for human beings. But there are also significant differences. Existentialism is typically focused on individual human lives and the poignant inevitability of suffering and choice for each individual whereas romanticism tended to be more oriented to the whole of nature and saw human beings as a part of that wider picture. Furthermore, romanticism flourished before the wars and genocides of the twentieth century whereas existentialism is born amid those horrors.

Why Christian Existential Humanism?
There are some who take issue with the term "Christian Existential Humanism" (CEH), given that the terms "existentialism" and "humanism" are most closely associated with atheistic movements which have proven themselves in opposition to Christianity. Both existentialism and humanism have Christian origins, however, as well as support in the Bible. This proves that it is the atheism of "atheistic existentialism" and "atheistic humanism" that is opposed to Christianity, and nothing intrinsic to either existentialism or humanism itself.
Existentialism:
Although this was a radical thought at the time, it was not a new idea, having been discussed extensively in the book of Job, which condemned the arrogance of trying to make God subject to human judgments; and in the teachings of Christ, which established that Christ and his followers were not bound by the law.
Christian existentialists, therefore, are those motivated first and foremost by obedience to God, and secondly by personal and subjective judgments, who accept no authority other than God, and their own consciences, who take absolute and undiminishable personal responsibility both for all their own actions and for the content of the world around them, yet who acknowledge their own limitations and take comfort in the sovereignity, the guidance and the mercy of God.
