      What is Forensic Science?
Forensic science is the use of science in the service of the law.  Sciences used in forensics include any discipline that can aid in the collection, preservation and analysis of evidence such as chemistry (for the identification of explosives), engineering (for examination of structural design) or biology (for DNA identification or matching). A forensic scientist is expert in any technical field and can provide an analysis of the evidence, witness testimony on examination results, technical support and even training in his or her specialized area.
      Why is Forensic Science important?
Analysis of forensic evidence is used in the investigation and prosecution of civil and criminal proceedings.  Often, it can help to establish the guilt or innocence of possible suspects. Forensic evidence is also used to link crimes that are thought to be related to one another.  For example, DNA evidence can link one offender to several different crimes or crime scenes (or exonerate the accused).  Linking crimes helps law enforcement authorities to narrow the range of possible suspects and to establish patterns of for crimes, which are useful in identifying and prosecuting suspects.

    Forensics and Law
Major cases that lead to forensic laws
Frye v. United States - In the murder trial of James Frye, Frye who admitted to the murder and then retracted the admittance tried to have the results of a rudimentary polygraph test placed as evidence of his innocence. The court quickly ruled that the polygraph was not "generally accepted by the scientific community" and therefore not admissable. In areas where special understanding is needed to make sense of the evidence, it must be "generally accepted by scientists" and therefore well tested.
Daubert v. Merrell Dowe Pharmaceuticals Inc - The Daubert family sued Merrell Dowe Pharmaceuticals because drug that they manufactured, caused birth defects in humans including their two children. The tests for the effects of this drug on child developement had not been conducted on humans and not generally accepted by the scientific community. The court ruled the expert witnesses testimony to the effects of this drug were admissable even though they were not "generally accepted". The ruling allowed the judge to be the final determining factor to admissability of evidence , "Gatekeeping".

This exhibit describes different fields in archaeology and laws pertaining to archaeology.
    http://www.mnsu.edu/emuseum/archaeology/archaeology/reconstruction.html
Reconstruction: Archaeological Sites, Cultures, Forensics and Law.
Reconstruction - the act or process of reproducing by new construction the exact form and detail of a vanished building, structure, or object, or any part thereof, as it appeared at a specific period of time. http://www.nationaltrust.org/ John Prag and Richard Neave have spent more than 20 years reconstructing faces from complete skulls and partial skulls. The skulls that have been worked on were found through archaeological excavations in Europe, Asia, and Africa. Prag and Neave have worked with anthropologists, pathologists, and facial surgeons to try to attach the correct amount of muscle and to form the muscle in order to "put flesh" on the bones of ancient people. This includes bog bodies like Lindow Man and Yde Girl to Philip II of Macedon, King Midas, and a Carian princess who many think may be Ada I, the adoptive mother of Alexander the Great. Much of the reconstruction work involves the technology of computers but Prag and Neave prefer to make three-dimensional models. In reconstructing of the face, the first step is to carefully make a cast of the skull. Small wooden pegs are inserted into the cast to varying depths at 21 key points. The ends of the pegs that project out indicate the thickness of the soft tissues based on information derived from present people of different ages, sexes, body builds, and ethnic groups. Using clay and the rules of anatomy, layers of big temporalis muscles on the side of the skull and superficial features of the head such as the eyelids and mouth are created. The final models are made with plaster of Paris, bronzed resin , or wax. Although, the models are not the true models they are very close to how the individual would have looked if they were alive.

If there is a computer on the premises of a crime scene, the chances are very good that there is valuable evidence on that computer. If the computer and its contents are examined (even if very briefly) by anyone other than a trained and experienced computer forensics specialist, the usefulness and credibility of that evidence will be tainted. If you currently have computer evidence that you have seized as part of an investigation and you are unsure how to proceed, please contact us. We will gladly provide a short consultation at no charge to your department. More in-depth assistance can range from consultation to hands-on help with all steps of the process.
