The Word on the Street: Our Blog
    Stay in the know!
    Welcome!
Welcome to the redesigned and interactive website of the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality. Our many new features include a blog, “School for Scandal,” which we hope will serve as a conversation starter around issues concerning gender and sexuality.  There will be regular posts from the Director, Ann Pellegrini, as well as from an exciting array of guest bloggers.   Look here, too, for follow-up reports on the Center’s events throughout the year. Our website makeover is deliberately—and playfully—tabloid in style, with the bubble gum colors reminiscent of US Weekly. Now, playful is not the opposite of serious. Indeed, if we are openly courting scandal, we do so to mark the ongoing caricature of gender and sexuality studies as at once too trivial to count as serious scholarship and too dangerous for impressionable students. These two accusations may seem like throwbacks to the culture wars of the late 80s and 90s. But, when it comes to the combustible combination of queers, classrooms, and budgetary bad times, certain accusations, to quote the well-known ad from Master Card, are priceless. So, rather than refuse the charge, we thought we’d go straight at it (well, not exactly “straight,” but you know what I mean…). After all, critics of gender and sexuality studies are hardly pulling their punches.

Gender and sexuality: an introduction to the special issue
Journal of Sex Research Feb, 2003 by Charlene L. Muehlenhard Zoe D. Peterson Leslie Karwoski Tamara S. Bryan ...
SEXUALITY AND GENDER: THE IMPORTANCE OF CONTEXT The articles in this issue reflect the cultural context of gender and sexuality. For example, Tolman, Striepe, and Harmon describe their endeavor into developing a model of sexual health for adolescent girls. Consistent with the emphasis on culture in the above definitions of gender, their model includes not only variables at the level of the individual girl (e.g., does she have knowledge about sexual health, is she aware of her own values) but also at three levels of contextual variables: variables at the personal relationship level (e.g., is she able to communicate with her partner about sexuality), the social relationships level (e.g., does she get social and emotional support from her family and peers), and the cultural level (e.g., does she have access to comprehensive sex education). The collection of articles in this special issue address gender and sexuality at all these levels. THE SEXUAL DOUBLE STANDARD Several themes emerged repeatedly across these articles. One such theme was the sexual double standard: differential sexual standards for women and men, with harsher, more restrictive standards almost always applied to women. Crawford and Popp review and critique the literature on the sexual double standard, or more precisely, the literature on sexual double standards, given that these standards vary among subcultures and among individuals within a subculture. Crawford and Popp document numerous variations in what behaviors are considered acceptable or unacceptable for women, girls, men, and boys, and in what contexts these behaviors are considered appropriate or not for each group.

The Georgetown Journal of Gender and the Law
The Georgetown Journal of Gender and the Law is in its twelfth year of publication. The mission of the Journal is to explore the impact of gender, sexuality, and race on both the theory and practice of law. The Journal complements a long tradition of feminist scholarship and advocacy at the Law Center. As you may know, Georgetown established the first sex discrimination clinic in the country. The Law Center also boasts one of the nation's most prestigious feminist legal faculties. The Journal seeks to complement the critical work being done by existing feminist journals while expanding inquiries into the intersection between gender, sexuality, and race. To that end, we have developed a unique publication that integrates cutting-edge scholarship and practical applications into each of the three distinct issues - one published in the winter and two published in the spring - that make up each volume. For more information on the three issues published by the Journal or the Journal's mission, please see the respective sections of this website.

Overview Course Descriptions Major Requirements Course Schedule ... women, gender, and sexuality overview Women, Gender, and Sexuality The program in Women, Gender, and Sexuality takes gender and sexuality as its critical terms of inquiry, exploring them as social constructs and analyzing their impact on the traditional disciplines. The program draws on the liberal arts and sciences to examine a wide range of topics relating to gender and sexuality, including women's varied experiences in different historical periods and cultures, as well as their contributions to culture in all its forms; the relationship among sex, gender, and sexuality; lesbian, gay, and transgender subcultures, and their histories and politics; and the institutional and discursive regulation of gender and sexuality. Recognizing that gender and sexuality cut across most fields of knowledge and that race, class, and nation are crucial components of gender and sexual identities, the program has both an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural focus.

Gender and Sexuality
This has been an area of interest in ALF since the very inception. While gender analysis forms a strong part of our practise, we have not done much research in the area. The one research project with a focus on gender which we have completed is one titled ‘Alternative dispute resolution in the context of gender’
We have been a part of both documenting the human rights violations against sexuality minorities as well as trying to conceptualize the nature of the struggles around sexuality and well as understanding the modes of social regulation of sexuality through discourses such as law and medicine.
We started our work in this area by being a part of a PUCL Fact Finding Team looking at the ‘Human rights violations against sexuality minorities in Bangalore.’ This Report was one of the first in the Indian context to place the violence suffered by sexuality minorities within a human rights framework.
We have followed up this Report by being a part of another PUCL Team which looked at ‘Human rights violations against the transgender community in Bangalore’ This Report has also been published. Learning from the first Report we consciously attempted in this Report to complement the factual narratives of violence with a conceptual inquiry into the causes of violence. We also have put in bail applications, draft complaint letters etc so that the Report serves an immediate purpose in the hijra community. The Report is now in the process of being translated into Kannada.

Undergraduate Program
The undergraduate Program in Gender and Sexuality Studies is administered through the new Department of Social and Cultural Analysis and offers a broad interdisciplinary investigation of gender and sexuality as keys to understanding human experience, fully integrating the study of gender and sexuality in its core curriculum, and insistently extending the view beyond U.S. borders.
At its core, the undergraduate Program encourages students to question the meanings of "male" and "female," as well as of sexual norms, in both Western and non-Western societies. Courses seek to unravel the ways in which ideas about gender and sexuality shape social roles and identities, in addition to the ways in which race, class, and ethnicity function in the experience of gender and sexuality within a culture. Gender and Sexuality Studies challenges the privileging of some categories (i.e., male or heterosexual) over others, along with the social and political implications of such hierarchies. Our curriculum makes gender and sexuality central rather than peripheral terms of analysis and seeks to complicate what is often presented as "natural" or "normal" in traditional academic curricula.
The Program offers an undergraduate major and a minor in Gender and Sexuality Studies, the requirements for which are set forth in the College of Arts and Science Bulletin. By its very nature, Gender and Sexuality Studies enables students to combine intellectual inquiry with lived experience. To this end, students are encouraged to participate in internship opportunities and independent studies. Through these initiatives, students gain professional experience as well as an opportunity to test lessons learned in the classroom.
