The Gestalt Principles SIMILARITY CONTINUATION CLOSURE PROXIMITY Gestalt is a psychology term which means "unified whole". It refers to theories of visual perception developed by German psychologists in the 1920s. These theories attempt to describe how people tend to organize visual elements into groups or unified wholes when certain principles are applied. These principles are: Similarity Similarity occurs when objects look similar to one another. People often perceive them as a group or pattern T he example above (containing 11 distinct objects) appears as as single unit because all of the shapes have similarity Unity occurs because the triangular shapes at the bottom of the eagle symbol look similar to the shapes that form the sunburst. When similarity occurs, an object can be emphasised if it is dissimilar to the others. This is called anomally The figure on the far right becomes a focal point because it is dissimilar to the other shapes.

The Therapist's Use of Self
The Dublin Gestalt Centre, formerly Dundrum Gestalt Centre, has been in practice since 1994 providing counselling and psychotherapy for individuals, couples and families. It was established by Claire Counihan, Kay Ferriter and Judy O'Hanlon. They each have a background in social work and are fully accredited therapists, IAHIP, IACP, EAP. They were trained by Netta and Marvin Kaplan of the Nof Yam Institute of Israel and Vincent Humphreys of the Dublin Institute of Gestalt Therapy. Gestalt Therapy is suited to both short term and long term work as its focus from the outset is on improving the healthy functioning of the individual, couple or family. The centre provides supervision for counsellors, psychotherapists and other professionals in the helping professions. Since 2004, it is running a training course in supervision to the standard of IACP accreditation for supervisors. The centre provides training at postgraduate level in the Gestalt approach to working with individuals and couples. These one-year courses are experiential and provide practioners with the experience of the Gestalt process and how to integrate it in their work.

31. Mary Henle: Gestalt Psychology And Gestalt Therapy
In this paper the American gestalt psychologist and associate of Wolfgang Kohler seeks to clarify the relations between gestalt therapy and gestalt psychology.

Mary Henle
Gestalt Psychology and Gestalt Therapy
[This paper was a presidential address to Division 24 at the meeting of the American Psychological Association, Chicago, September 1975. It was first published in the Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences 14 , pp 23-32, then republished in M. Henle, 1879 and All That, Essays in the Theory and History of Psychology , Columbia University Press, New York 1986, pp 22-35. Have a look at the Behavior Online Forum where a critical discussion on this topic was led and to the Archives of the Gestalt Journal , New York, where some articles of Gestalt therapists replying to Henle's critical remarks can be read. ]
The purpose of this paper is to try to set the historical record straight while the history in question is still in the making. lt seeks to clarify the relations between gestalt therapy and Gestalt psychology, from which the therapy claims to derive. In considering gestalt therapy, I will confine myself to the work of Fritz Perls, the finder, as he calls himself, of this therapy (Perls 1969/1971:16), with emphasis on his later books. Perls himself writes, in his introduction to the 1969 reprint of Ego, Hunger and Aggression

Handbook for Theory, Research, and Practice in Gestalt Therapy (click link to see inside) Philip Brownell, Editor Cambridge Scholars Publishing Many books have been written about gestalt therapy. Not many have been written on the relationship between gestalt therapy and psychotherapy research. The Handbook for Theory, Research, and Practice in Gestalt Therapy is a needed bridge between these two concerns, and a timely addition to scholarly literature on gestalt therapy itself. In 2007 an international team of experienced gestalt therapists devoted themselves to create this book, and they have collaborated with one another to produce a challenging and enriching addition to the literature relevant to gestalt therapy. "I recommend this book to anyone who is serious about practicing his or her craft better by supporting it with a broader base, one that demonstrates that merging existential phenomenology with phenomenological behaviorism can produce verifiable, replicable results for what is essentially an idiographic pursuit." – Edwin C. Nevis, Ph.D.

GESTALT
Gestalt is a general description for the concepts that make unity and variety possible in design. It is a German word that roughly translates as "whole" or "form." Gestalt theory is involved with visual perception and the psychology of art among other things. It is concerned with the relationship between the parts and the whole of a composition. In this section you will study five gestalt concepts:
Closure
the mind supplies the missing pieces in a composition Continuance the eye continues in the direction it is going Similarity what an items looks like and how that effects gestalt Proximity where items are in relationship to each other and how that effects gestalt Alignment lining up objects to organize and form groups
The objective of studying gestalt is to put the designer in control of what the viewers see when they look at a composition. See emphasis for more information.
