On Perceptual Grouping
Adapted from Max Wertheimer, Untersuchen zur Lehre von der Gestalt, II. Psychologishe Forshung Now we turn to Wertheimer's consideration of perceptual grouping . What is most important about this work in the present context is that Wertheimer attempted to see what our mind does against a consideration of what our mind might have done. In the work we review here, Wertheimer explores the way we typically perceptually group elements. But in order to determine whether the mind is exerting a "bias" he considers some of the ways these same elements could have been grouped but weren't. The behaviorists typically weren't this analytic. Consequently, it was the gestaltist that kept trying to point out these pesky problems that can arise when you are a bit more analytic about what you are up to. The examples that Wertheimer constructed were very simple; most of them consisted of a set of dots. The purpose of these examples was to aid in the understanding of the different factors that influenced the grouping or composition of elements into wholes. The gestaltist had suggested what they called unit forming factors that influence how elements are grouped or organized in wholes. These unit forming factors were:
  • similarity;

Gestalt
(Plural Gestalten) is German for pattern, figure, shape, or form It originates from the work of Max Wertheimer and his students Khler and Koffka but not precisely translatable, just as Angst is not. It is used to refer to wholes, systems and complete structures rather than the reductionist approach of seeking ever smaller components of a phenomenon. In learning, opposed to the reductionism of behaviourism , it concentrates on the way in which the mind insists on finding patterns in things, and how this contributes to learning, especially the development of insight.
Classic Gestalt image
A vase or two faces? This is the iconographic parallel of semiotic concerns about discourse. (I can't believe I just wrote that! Pretentious, moi?) Even so, I'm afraid it's (probably) accurate. It's easy to see one or the other: almost impossible to see neither. The classic Gestalt phenomenon is that of figure versus ground . Which is the image and which the background?

http://www.gestaltphila.org/Overview/index.asp
Gestalt Therapy is a complete, complex, and highly developed approach to human psychological functioning. Both Gestalt theory and practice are based on several profound areas of thought and study, including field theory, philosophy, psychoanalysis, Eastern thought, and psychology. A German word, "Gestalt," points to a main theme of the therapy. It describes the unified nature of a pattern of elements and, in Gestalt therapy practice, refers to our tendency to see and act in unified wholes, instead of parts. Thus, the mind, body, and spirit act as one and are not treated as separate functions. In Gestalt Therapy, the whole and the integrity of the whole are crucially important. A core Gestalt concept is that we are born whole and full of possibilities and that we create adjustments as a way to cope with adversity. Gestalt Therapy seeks to resolve these "creative adjustments," which have become rigidified, in order to enhance people's creativity, liveliness, and presence in the world. It is useful to conceptualize Gestalt Therapy as a wheel, with each of the spokes, or concepts, having much the same importance and contributing to the overall function. Gestalt Therapy works through the interconnection of concepts. Here are a few that are key:
  • Present-centered awareness.

Instruction is offered by a faculty of certified gestalt therapists with considerable experience in training, teaching and supervising beginning and advanced level therapists. Our particular approach to gestalt therapy continues to evolve, with more and more gestalt therapists from around the world contributing their own insights. Our training focuses on contemporary relational perspectives in gestalt therapy. We emphasize training in working with the nuances of emotional process, therapist-patient interaction, enduring relational themes, process of psychotherapy, and the use of experiments in a relational therapy. Relational gestalt therapy theory is taught systematically and is interwoven into the experiential part of the program. PGI is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education for psychologists and by the

Gestalt Psychology
"Gestalt theory began toward the close of the 19th century in Austriaand south Germany as a protest against associationist and structural schools' piecemeal analysis of experience into atomistic elements." Max Wertheimer, Wolfgang Khler and Kurt Koffka collaborated to found Gestalt. (Britannica) Early studies dealt with illusion, for example, the Kanizsa triangle , which we used as the background for many of our pages. As you look at the Kanisza triangle, a boundary can be seen where the perceived white triangle meets the white background; a boundary between white and white!
"The Gestalt psychologists (Koffka, 1935; Khler, 1940) believed that a number of innate tendencies influence the way we see. While many contemporary psychologists maintain that even these tendencies are the result of experience and learning, all agree that they are strong and virtually universal tendencies." (Darley et. al. 114)
David Marr
, who thought that many who investigated vision were "misled by the apparent simplicity of the act of seeing," approached the matter at a more basic level: how he recognize lines and other elements. (Marr 30) Look at the image (Gombrich 104)of "The < > must get done,"
