Lecture notes on:
Fritz Perls and Gestalt Therapy
And Comparisons With Classical Gestalt Psychology I. PRINCIPAL INFLUENCES ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF GESTALT THERAPY Fritz continued to develop the technique, moving west to Big Sur, introduced the innovations of the "hot seat" and the "empty chair," and drew on his experience in theatre and on psychodrama to bring an more active enactive dimension into the work. Instead of merely talking to the therapist, the client is asked to act out two or more sides of himself or herself that are in conflict, or to act out dialogues with one or more other significant people in his or her life. In so doing, the client temporarily identifies with disowned and projected parts of the self and eventually assimilates them in an aware manner. Perls also lived for some months in a Zen monastery in Japan, and it is rumored that at one point he studied with the Russian mystic George Gurdjieff. Certainly there is a strong resemblance between his "awareness continuum" and Gurdjieff's "self-remembering." So Gestalt Therapy draws from all these influences and traditions:
  • Kurt Goldstein's "Organismic Psychology" (a gestalt-physiological approach Kurt Lewin's analysis of tension systems Psychoanalysis from Freud to Fenichel Somatically-oriented psychoanalysis (Reich); Alexander technique, Feldenkreis

Home Variant Classes Gestalt Characters
Gestalt Characters
In this high-powered campaign variant, characters essentially take two classes at every level, choosing the best aspects of each. The process is similar to multiclassing, except that characters gain the full benefits of each class at each level. if the two classes you choose have aspects that overlap (such as Hit Dice, attack progression, saves, and class features common to more than one class), you choose the better aspect. The gestalt character retains all aspects that don’t overlap. The gestalt character variant is particularly effective if you have three or fewer players in your group, or if your players enjoy multiclassing and want characters with truly prodigious powers. This variant works only if every PC in the campaign uses it, and it results in complicated characters who may overwhelm newer players with an abundance of options.
Building A Gestalt Character
To make a 1st-level gestalt character, choose two standard classes. (You can also choose any of the variant classes , though you can’t combine two versions of the same class.) Build your character according to the following guidelines.

Changing Ways: Volume One
by Justin Randall How do you trust someone when you no longer know yourself? David Barrot, a retired Corrections Officer, moved to Grey Oaks after the tragic death of his son, Cale. With wife Lucy and daughter Jessie, the Barrot family bought a farm on the outskirts of town and began their new life, putting aside all the dark events of their past. The first sightings started months ago, igniting rumors of disease and infection. Newspapers reported unusual lesions appearing on livestock and stories of strange side effects spread quickly. Perhaps it was inevitable that the people of Grey Oaks would be next...

COMMENTS ON THE CONCEPT OF CLOSURE
by Abraham S. Luchins and Edith H. Luchins

[273:] The concept of closure was introduced by WERTHEIMER in his paper on the principles of perceptual organization (1923). Closure was considered as only one of several Gestalt principles of organization, all assuming to be operating in the direction of , a word used by WERTHEIMER to denote a tendency for organization to be as "good" (as clear, as stable) as is possible under prevailing conditions. Specifically, the principle of closure refers to the tendency towards greater perceptual stability possessed by closed areas as compared with enclosed ones, and hence to the tendency for closed areas to be more readily attained and maintained in perception. But, in actual use, the concept of closure has been given other and broader interpretations.
[281f:] Analysis of the utilization of the concept of closure left us with the impression that a multiplicity of meanings is associated with the concept. To begin with, "closure" is used, even in Gestalt psychological writings, to denote
(1) a process
(2) a resultant or terminating phase or consummation of the process, and, finally

"Memento Mori! Remember that you are mortal!"

November 7th – 9th, 2008, Zurich, Switzerland

The joint symposium of the Swiss Association for Gestalt Therapy and Integrative Therapy (SVG), the Austrian Association for Gestalt Therapy (OEVG), the Special Department for Integrative Gestalt Therapy in the Austrian Association for Group Therapy and Group Dynamics (FS/IGT) as well as the German Association for Gestalt Therapy (DVG) focused on various questions from the perspective of mortality. This was the second joint conference organized by Gestalt associations in these three countries (www.d-a-ch-gestalttagungen.org). Besides affording German-speaking Gestalt therapists the opportunity to exchange ideas within their community, experts from other fields were invited to contribute their conceptual inputs to our ongoing theory formation.
When I first read about the main theme of this symposium, I thought to myself: Actually, at the age of 46, I am still too young for this subject. However, I was so tempted to attend a Gestalt therapy conference in Switzerland where I could meet Gestalt therapists that I decided to satisfy my curiosity and set off for Zurich. The symposium took place in the Paulus-Academy in Zurich, an ecumenically oriented catholic education center in a quiet, single-family home neighborhood of Zurich. There were numerous rooms available for the symposium, among them an auditorium and a large foyer on the lower level, which well represented the depth and underground aspects of the subject. Moreover, the Lower Church was available to those participants who were seeking tranquility. I would like to briefly report on several lectures that I attended, and which are presently available (in German) for purchase under www.auditorium-netzwerk.de

NEXT INTRODUCTION TO GESTALT Sunday, Nov. 14th
Your Subtitle text HOME WELCOME TO THE GESTALT CENTER FOR PSYCHOTHERAPY AND TRAINING , located in the historic Flatiron District of New York City. We offer post-graduate training, extensive workshops and weekend intensives for mental health professionals, as well as therapy referrals to Gestalt therapists.
WHAT IS GESTALT THERAPY?
Gestalt therapy is an holistic therapy that focuses on the total person, recognizing the unity of the mind, body, and emotions. In the 1940's, Frederick (Fritz) Perls, a trained psychoanalyst, developed the Gestalt theory and method in response to his dissatisfaction with the analytic, mind-focused therapy of the first half of the twentieth Century. Gestalt therapy integrates Gestalt and humanistic psychology, existentialism, and Eastern teachings. Gestalt is a creative, gentle and patient therapy which focuses on awareness in the present moment. Through skillful use of a variety of experiential methods, our therapy helps us to free energy locked into old, dysfunctional behavior patterns so that we can undo them and reorganize ourselves in a way that allows us to live more fully and effectively, centered in ourselves, yet able to reach out and take in what the world has to offer.
OUR MISSION
  • Further the knowledge and practice of Gestalt practice, theory and values through the training of mental health professionals and the education of the lay public.
