"Who Wouldn't Want a Massage?"
The whole concept of Massage Therapy is different than just the term massage by itself. Most people would love to have a "feel good" massage, where you can just relax, and feel the wonderful work of the massage therapists' hands. At the end of the massage, you want to just curl up in your bed and fall asleep! The other concept of massage, the Massage Therapy term, is a whole different meaning. This type of massage, at times, may feel good, but there is usually a lot of discomfort, and sometimes pain, all to contribute to a higher purpose, the ultimate pain free physical state. Many people who receive physical therapy, should have Massage Therapy as an adjunct to their treatment. Even if massage isn't the most important aspect of treatment, a loosened muscle is a happy muscle, and one should pursure Massage Therapy from a preventative point of view. Many health care insurance plans will help cover the cost of massage, and that will help cover the cost. Prevention is the best form of treatment. Like the saying goes, in these times of the metric system, "a gram of prevention, is worth a kilogram of cure"!

The short form being taught by Gary has been choreographed by Mr. Peter Ralston who is the only non-Asian martial artist to have won the World Martial Arts Competition. Gary is continuing his studies of the art of Cheng Hsin with Pete Ralston of Pipe Creek, Texas. Tai Chi, pronounced "tie chee", is a gentle exercise program that is a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Derived from the martial arts, tai chi is composed of slow, deliberate movements, meditation, and deep breathing, which enhance physical health and emotional well-being. The Tai Chi form is being taught for health purposes, not marital.

Axillary hyperhidrosis manifests itself through an increased underarm sweat production and this is triggered by the sympathetic nervous system. A malfunction in the nerves controlling underarm sweat glands leads to excessive sweat production, resulting in constantly moist armpits. Often associated with the negative effects of palmar hyperhidrosis, axillary hyperhidrosis is sometimes triggered by exterior factors such as anxiety, psychological stress and tiredness. This is not a rule, however, and there may be no clearly identified stimuli that trigger excessive underarm sweat.

    This unit encourages students to consider many different forms of physical activity which might appeal to them, to keep track of how much exercise they get, and to compare their own activity choices with those of other students around the country.
  • Lesson One: Keeping a Physical Activity Log. In this activity, students take home a log to keep a record of their daily and weekly physical activity patterns. This allows them to assess their curent physical activity habits.
  • Lesson Two: Classroom Comparison of Activities. Students bring in their physical activity logs and work in pairs to calculate their average amount of physical activity per day during the week in which the data is collected.
  • Lesson Three: Family Fitness. Students will consider which physical activities are best suited to the needs of their family members. Next they will consider a few activities in which they can participate together with family members, and describe a strategy to help their family become more physically active.
