83. Erich Fromm
Biography and introduction to his theories
http://www.ship.edu/~cgboeree/fromm.html
ERICH FROMM Dr. C. George Boeree Biography Erich Fromm was born in 1900 in Frankfurt, Germany. His father was a business man and, according to Erich, rather moody. His mother was frequently depressed. In other words, like quite a few of the people we've looked at, his childhood wasn't very happy. Like Jung, Erich came from a very religious family, in his case orthodox Jews. Fromm himself later became what he called an atheistic mystic. In his autobiography, Beyond the Chains of Illusion , Fromm talks about two events in his early adolescence that started him along his path. The first involved a friend of the family's:
Maybe she was 25 years of age; she was beautiful, attractive, and in addition a painter, the first painter I ever knew. I remember having heard that she had been engaged but after some time had broken the engagement; I remember that she was almost invariably in the company of her widowed father. As I remember him, he was an old, uninteresting, and rather unattractive man, or so I thought (maybe my judgment was somewhat biased by jealousy). Then one day I heard the shocking news: her father had died, and immediately afterwards, she had killed herself and left a will which stipulated that she wanted to be buried with her father. (p. 4)
As you can imagine, this news hit the 12 year old Erich hard, and he found himself asking what many of us might ask: why? Later, he began finding some answers partial ones, admittedly in Freud.

I'd like to help make your ceremony more than that. The words you say your vows and the words you hear from others can help you focus on the joys and strengths of your relationship, and make for a beautiful memory that will stay with you throughout your marriage. Please browse the album to see notes from couples I've worked with. There are some nice photos, too. If you'd like me to write or call, please fill out the form below. There's a FAQ about my services, and me, that you can download from here . GLBT couples might be interested in these answers to some of their specific questions. You might also care to visit a page that has more detail about how I think about marriage ceremonies.
About me
I am a Humanist Minister and am also ordained as a madrikh within Humanistic Judaism. (I also have a day job: I was in the technology sector for many years and now teach high school in a suburb of Boston.) I've helped more than a hundred couples have spiritual and meaningful wedding ceremonies; most of my clients come from Massachusetts, but I've also performed weddings in Maine, Connecticut, New Hampshire and New York, and have worked with couples who arranged to come over from Europe just for their wedding. If you're interested in learning more about me and my approach to weddings, there's lots more to read at link needed to old home page. But the best way to find out if I can give you the wedding you want is a free consultation, in person or by phone. Fill out the form , send an email to

This is usually identified with happiness but I add that, in joyful exuberance, there is high excitement, the intensity of living, throbbing with passion, engaging in daring activities of enterprise and adventure. Joyful exuberance is enhanced when we not only fulfil our needs and wants, but creatively express our goals and aspirations. It denotes some degree of excellence, nobility, even perfectibility, of a person's talents and achievements. It comes to fruition for those who find life intensely worth living and at times exhilarating.

96. Liberation Psychology: The Integrity Of Choosing Intimacy In Our Communications
developed by Michele Toomey in response to the sexism that permeates traditional psychology.

Liberation Psychology Tapes

I have chosen to professionally record: "My Women's Mythical Liberation Tales" and "Liberation Psychology: Calling for Revolution Not Reform." The tales lend themselves to being recorded because they are meant to be heard. The Revolution Not Reform paper was delivered as a talk so it, too, is suited for recording. I hope these tapes add to the power of the message. Click here for more information on purchasing these tapes. Michele Toomey developed liberation psychology and subsequently liberated theology in response to the western world's dependence on dualism's approach to opposites. Dualism assumes that opposites are unequal and antagonistic, thus opposites are expected to relate as enemies and engage in war with each other. Winning or losing is the measure of success or failure, and proving one's worth is based on winning. Liberation psychology, on the other hand, assumes that opposites are just that, opposite, equally legitimate forces that relate with accountability and fairness so each polarity gets its fair turn. Life is seen as a journey not a test, and domination is an abuse of power. This is particularly relevant to the sexism that permeates our society, where opposite sex means unequal sex in the dualistic world view, and where strength is seen as the ability to dominate and the measure of superiority. Liberation psychology rejects this view and these definitions. Instead, opposites are seen as equally legitimate forces, and power is defined as energy. Desire is seen as the source of our energy and intensity is defined as strength. With this world view, women and men are equally legitimate and equally strong, and sexism has no justification.

(David Dent, March/April, 2002, Psychology Today)
Nicholas Emler, a UK social psychologist, has produced a controversial report which argues that high self-esteem may be detrimental. For example, high self-esteem seems most dangerous when it colors racial and ethnic tolerance. "People with incredibly positive views of themselves feel anybody who differs from them is an insult," explains Emler. "They just don't like people who are different." For an opposing view, read Is high self-esteem bad for you?
