What is personality?
In psychology, personality is a collection of emotional, thought, and behavioral patterns unique to a person that is consistent over time. The word originates from the Latin persona, which means "mask," indicating that early theorists regarded the personality as the outward expression of the internal nature of human beings. Personality can also be distinguished from the related concept of temperament, which is the aspect of personality concerned specifically with emotional dispositions and reactions, or the mood pattern of a person.
Brief history of personality theory
The four temperaments as illustrated by Johann Kaspar Lavater. Greek philosopher/physician Hippocrates recorded the first known personality model, basing his four “types” on the amount of body fluids, or "humors," an individual possessed. Greek physician Galen expounded upon Hippocrates' theory based on the four basic body fluids (humors): blood, phlegm, black bile, and yellow bile. According to their relative predominance in an individual, they would produce, respectively, temperaments designated sanguine (warm, pleasant), phlegmatic (slow-moving, apathetic), melancholic (depressed, sad), and choleric (quick to react, hot-tempered). German philosopher Immanuel Kant popularized these ideas by organizing the constructs along the two axes of feelings and activity.

It is proposed in this article to give an account:
  • (1) of the physical constituents of personality in accordance with the scholastic theory;
  • (2) of concepts of personality that conflict with the theory;
  • (3) of abnormalities of consciousness with reference to their bearing on theories of personality.
The physical constituents of personality
A man's personality is that of which he has cognizance under the concept of "self". It is that entity, substantial , permanent, unitary, which is the subject of all the states and acts that constitute his complete life . An appeal to self-consciousness shows us that there is such a subject, of which thought, will , and feeling are modifications. It is substantial , i.e. not one or all of the changing states but the reality underlying them, for our self-consciousness testifies that, besides perceiving the thought, it has immediate perception in the same act of the subject to whom the thought belongs. Just as no motion can be apprehended without some sort of apprehension of the object moved, so the perception of thought carries with it perception of the thinker. The changing states are recognized as determinations of the "self", and the very concept of a determination involves the presence of something determined, something not itself a determination, i.e. a substance . It is permanent, in that though one may say, "I am completely changed", when referring to a former state, still one

      Personality Poker
      • October 25th, 2010 9:59 am ET
      On October 28th, Stephen Shapiro's book Personality Poker will be released. Shapiro is a leader in the corporate world, specializing in innovation. This book looks at how companies and other organizations can improve their productivity.  What does this have to do with outdoor recreation? Quite a bit actually. If you are going on an expedition, or are participating in a team building activity, you will want to know exactly which role each individual plays and capitalize off of their skills. This is especially true for mountain climbing and other extreme outdoor sports. Shapiro drew his inspiration from Formula One racing pit crews. By watching how quickly each person on the crew worked and how they each fulfilled a certain function, Shapiro was inspired to translate this efficiency to the workplace. If each individual fulfills a role that they are best at and energizes them, companies will be more efficient and better organized. This also prevents burnout of employees. What this means for outdoor recreation is that you need to include people in a trek that fulfill a role that you lack in. If you are climbing a mountain, for instance, you would want someone to pick up the slack with skills that you might not have. For some, this is cooking. For others, it is knot tying. You get the idea.
